This work introduces a new framework for shape characterization of neural cells by semi-automated generation of dendrograms, which are abstract structures describing different aspects associated to the branching structure of dendrites in neurons. Particularly, the dendrograms generated by the proposed method includes the length of each dendritic segment. The new method, which is based on multiscale curvature contour segmentation and syntactic shape analysis, is robust and greatly improve the tiresome task of dendrogram extraction, traditionally performed by human operators. Results corroborating the effectiveness of the technique are also presented.

Several companies are preparing launching high resolution imaging satellites. images from these satellites will have 1 to 3 meter ground resolution and will be very useful for analyzing current status of earth surface. An intelligent GIS and DB based imageprocessing system, TIPS(Tactical Information processing System) has been designed and implemented to support the detailed analysis of the land surface. This system is designed to provide a computergraphics environment in which the analyst can interactively operate the entire analyzing process such as digitizing, geometric correction by ground control points, interactive enhancement, various transforms, arithmetic operations, calculating vegetation indices, various classifications and estimations, etc. The TIPS is expected to be a valuable tool for investigating the various facts such as the change detection, land cover classification, capacity estimation of the industrial complex, urban information extraction, etc. using high resolution images.

image registration is one of the basic imageprocessing operations in remote sensing. With the increase in the number of images collected every day from different sensors, automated registration of multi-sensor/multi-spectral images has become an important issue. A wide range of registration techniques has been developed for many different types of applications and data. Given the diversity of the data, it is unlikely that a single registration scheme will work satisfactorily for all different applications. A possible solution is to integrate multiple registration algorithms into a rule-based artificial intelligence system, so that appropriate methods for any given set of multisensor data can be automatically selected. The objective of this paper is to present an automatic registration algorithm which has been developed at INPE. It uses a multiresolution analysis procedure based upon the wavelet transform. The procedure is completely automatic and relies on the grey level information content of the images and their local wavelet transform modulus maxima. The algorithm was tested on SPOT and TM images from forest, urban and agricultural areas. In all cases we obtained very encouraging results.

The image alignment problem has as input a set of different images from a single object or several identical objects. One instance of the object in each image is misaligned relatively to the other in a given image, that is, the objects lie in different positions and orientations. Thus, the problem consists in finding the homogeneous planar transforms for each of those instances. The process is not simple in the case of noisy images. Nevertheless, it is possible to tackle some cases of the image alignment problem using template matching. This work describes two methodologies that were developed to align noisy images of protein quaternary structures obtained by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). These structures can be geometrically described by regular prisms and polyhedra. One of the methods uses the traditional approach for this problem - exploring image similarities. The second one explores the geometric simplicity of the objects being imaged by using template matching in order to solve the problem. The results show that there are cases where the template matching method achieves higher precision and computational efficiency to align that kind of image when compared to traditional ones.

The purpose of this paper is to present a system for the analysis and classification of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. This system, unlike most of its competitors, allows a careful modeling of the statistical properties of the data beyond the usual Gaussian hypothesis. The modeling tools include basic descriptive measures and the choice of suited distributions, through goodness-of-fit tests, to model the data. The classification tools offer the choice between pointwise and contextual (Markovian) techniques, and the quantitative assessment of the quality of the results. The system is goal-driven, and its interfaces are solely based on pull-down menus;the user is prompted with the correct sequence of operations, whenever an invalid option is invoked. An example of the use of this system for the classification of a SAR image is presented.

The new computerized imaging, circular polarized light microscopy technique was developed to measure the orientation of collagen fibers in images of serial sections of connective tissue. The system consists of a modified Olympus BX50 polarized microscope, a Sony AVC-D7 video camera, and a Silicon graphics Indy computer. Both methods required the initial segmentation of fibers and used binary images. Segments of fiber midlines were traced with vertical and horizontal scanlines, or alternatively the whole midlines were identified recursively from the Euclidean Distance Map of the image using the novel definition of the Medial Axis Transform. The last technique produced connected midlines of the fibers and handled sinuous fibers well. The fiber midlines produced by this technique were traversed by a midline traversal algorithm, and the orientation distribution was obtained by least squares line fitting. The accuracy of the developed techniques was evaluated against synthetic images, composed of straight lines and sinuous curves. Kupier's statistic was used to evaluate the consistency of the fiber orientation calculations. Statistical analysis of the results showed, that the proposed Medial Axis Transform with Hilditch's connectivity preserving skeletonization produced the most accurate results. The developed method was used to measure collagen fiber orientation in microscopy images of canine meniscus, porcine aortic valve leaflet, bovine pericardium and bio-textiles.
