Several companies are preparing to launch high resolution imaging satellites. images from these satellites will have 1 to 3 meter ground resolution and will be very useful for analyzing the current status of the Earth's surface. An intelligent GIS and DB based imageprocessing system, TIPS (Tactical Information processing System) has been designed and implemented to support the detailed analysis of the land surface. This system is designed to provide a computergraphics environment in which the analyst can interactively operate the entire analyzing process such as digitizing, geometric correction by ground control points, interactive enhancement, various transforms, arithmetic operations, calculating vegetation indices, various classifications and estimations, etc. The TIPS is expected to be a valuable tool for investigating the various facts such as the change detection, land cover classification, capacity estimation of the industrial complex, urban information extraction, etc. using high resolution images.

A motorized mechanical setup has been designed to provide a series of two-dimensional (2-D) parallel echographic slices of the breast from the regular translation of a linear phased array transducer, During the acquisition step, the breast is compressed between a plane support and a plexiglass plate to avoid breast motions. A stereoscopic computer graphic method has been developed for the visualization of such three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasonic data. Experiments on an agar gel phantom and on in vivo female breasts have been performed.

We present a small-scale, reconfigurable processing system. It contains four FPGAs (9 K to 13 K gate equivalents), 2 MByte Flash Memory, 256 KByte fast SRAM and a 16-bit MAC unit. The system has a PCI-bus interface and was designed to speed up DSP, imageprocessing and computer-graphics algorithms. Examples from medical imaging are shown.

We propose a new method to process range images fast. graphics rendering hardware in workstation is able to synthesize range images from a surface model of object very fast, so simple analysis procedure is available. A real-time range sensor named `Silicon Range Finder' is used to acquire range images more than 30 frames per second. Time of repetition and accuracies of the estimated motion seem to be feasible for the man-machine cooperative systems.

In surveying the possible applications of parallel computing, computergraphics is singularity attractive. This is because many computergraphics algorithms are so computationally intensive and yet also inherently very parallel in nature. The primary objective of an NSF grant to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington was to establish parallel computing in the undergraduate curriculum. A secondary objective was to address the issue of parallelism for computergraphics;however, curricular constraints made this difficult to do. Our response to this difficulty was twofold. For one, we focused on imageprocessing as a more accessible, but very significant, alternative to ordinary computergraphics. Also, as a means of enabling deeper student involvement, we were able to supplement the original equipment grant (ILI) with one for supporting student research (REU).

The authors carry out tests with two readily available automated matching algorithms in their application to (a) Magellan SAR stereo images, and (b) ERS-1 and X-SAR real-simulated images. The match points are examined visually, and an accuracy analysis on Magellan data is performed by comparison with manual measurements.

A page layout segmentation algorithm for locating text, background and halftone areas is presented. The algorithm has been implemented on Splash 2-an FPGA-based array processor. The speed as determined by the Xilinx synthesis tools projects an application speed of 5 MHz. For documents of size 1,024/spl times/1,024 pixels, a significant speedup of two orders of magnitude compared to a SparcStation 20 has been achieved.
