In this article I would like to describe how holography is being taught at the Institute for Media Sciences and Film at the Brunswick Art University. Besides I will be going into some details concerning our own works created together with Thomas Liick, which as examples of "Radical Holography" show the orientation of the teaching in Brunswick.

The work in progress, "You Are Here" is the first in a series of site - specific holographic installations dealing primarily with the representation of nature in contemporary culture. The work will be experienced in three modes. The Site, the Non Sites, and the Event. The Site: A beach on the north eastern coast of Australia is the main site where a stereogram depicting sea level changes over the past 2.5 million years will be seen by moonlight. The stereogram will be shown on the same beach for the next 2.5 million years. Non-Sites: In-door venues where copies of the stereogram will be viewed mounted to the wall of a small lounge room type set. Event: A satellite transmission of the lunar illumination of the stereogram and the landscape on its first viewing will be seen at all the non-site venues. By the relationship of events, sites, and images which comprise "You Are Here", the viewer is placed at the centre of two vast time spans which reach out in opposing directions.

Summary form only given. Discusses the latest in massively parallel processing (MPP) applications' results through high-resolution graphics and animation. Three themes are represented, demonstrating the relationship between massively parallel computing and scientific visualization. Results of applications computed on MPPs and visualized on graphics workstations are shown for many of the cases. Examples of result data whose image rendering are performed using parallel algorithms on MPPs are shown, and some performance measurements are given. Finally, graphics presentation of data representing the behavioral dynamics of MPPs are shown, opening the way for scientific visualization to assist in the optimization of MPP computation.< >

Presents O(log n) time SIMD hypercube algorithms for transforming binary images to linear quadtrees and vice versa, where n is the size of the images as well as the number of hypercube nodes. The quadtree building algorithm, which generates the locational codes in preorder, is an improvement of a recently reported algorithm that runs in O(log/sup 2/n) time. The authors also give an optimal linear quadtree building algorithm which runs in T(n) time using n/sup 2//T(n) processors for log n >

This paper documents the development and first offering of an interdisciplinary undergraduate course in Digital imageprocessing at the University of Wyoming. The course itself was designed to serve majors from a wide range of academic disciplines, although in its initial offering, it was attended mainly by students majoring in computer Science and Electrical Engineering. National Science Foundation funding for equipment for the course was used to purchase a high speed imageprocessing system and six state-of-the-art graphics workstations with software that supported basic and intermediate level imageprocessing operations. Students in the course were required to perform a standard set of imageprocessing sequences such as histogramming and histogram equalization, edge detection and evaluation, image smoothing, region growing, Fourier filtering, and image warping. Each student, in consultation with the instructor, then pursued a specific topic in imageprocessing which involved either combining several imageprocessing operations to produce a desired result or developing special code to implement imageprocessing algorithms that were discussed in the text but not included in the provided software. The nature of the course and its impact on education at the University of Wyoming is discussed in the paper that follows.

Describes a graphical user interface system for constructing automatic image-segmentation processes for 3D medical-imaging applications. The system provides a user-friendly environment for prototyping, testing, and executing complex image-analysis processes and can interact with a graphics-based 3D medical image-analysis package. The interface links to a library of 1D, 2D, and 3D image-processing functions and can easily link to other functions created by the user. Demonstrations of the system are given for 3D left-ventricular chamber extraction and 3D upper-airway analysis.< >

This paper describes an information distribution system that merges the personal computer (PC) and facsimile technologies to enhance and expand the capabilities of existing stand-alone facsimile machines. The goal is to identify and develop mechanisms to reliably dispatch or receive a page of text or graphical material to or from any place worldwide within one minute. To allow universal compatibility, the system is designed based on the CCITT recommendations for Group 3 fax apparatus. Automated sending and receiving processes are devised in a user-friendly, menu-driven environment to minimize human intervention. The information dispatching mechanism is integrated with existing PC wordprocessors, graphics editors, and image databases. In addition, the system software is implemented at the application layer of an OSI LAN model as a fax server to provide a cost effective solution for information exchange that rivals existing document delivery system.
