This paper presents a new technique for the segmentation of range images. It tends to be a hybrid approach that tends to combine edge detection and region growing techniques toward accomplishing the task of segmentation. Multiple attribute maps were utilised to provide surface characteristics and smoothness information. The crossbreeding approach produces a segmentation map and an edge map. Edges detected by such method possessed good localisation property. The incorporation of the region growing process eliminates internal micro edges and produces a segmentation map. The edge and segmentation maps when conveyed to the higher level recognition process, may prove valuable for three-dimensional object identification purposes.< >

We present efficient new randomized and deterministic methods for transforming optimal solutions for a type of relaxed integer linear program into provably good solutions for the corresponding NP-hard discrete optimization problem. Without any constraint violation, the ε-approximation problem for many problems of this type is itself NP-hard. Our methods provide polynomial-time ε-approximations while attempting to minimize the packing constraint *** methods lead to the first known approximation algorithms with provable performance guarantees for the s-median problem, the tree prunning problem, and the generalized assignment problem. These important problems have numerous applications to data compression, vector quantization, memory-based learning, computergraphics, imageprocessing, clustering, regression, network location, scheduling, and communication. We provide evidence via reductions that our approximation algorithms are nearly optimal in terms of the packing constraint violation. We also discuss some recent applications of our techniques to scheduling problems.

A modular parallel computer architecture developed for imageprocessing and analysis is presented. This architecture tries to cover efficiently the various imageprocessing levels. The system is based on a graphics processor, used for frame grabbing and image display (also used for intermediate imageprocessing tasks), and several floating point digital signal processors that constitute a parallel processing subsystem controlled by one of these digital signal processors. The communication between the processors is made through dedicated interfaces with fast buffering. The system is supervised and controlled by a personal computer.

New and efficient algorithms for texture mapping computergraphicsimages have been developed. A number of different texture mapping methods have been implemented and results compared and analyzed. The basis of this study was to develop real time algorithms useful in designing graphics processor architectures using parallelism and high performance low cost elements such as the i860 microprocessor. Several methods for reducing the inverse transformations from screen to texture space are described. Since texture antialias filtering is one of the most computational and time demanding aspects of texturing, a fast antialiasing method based on the use of a bounding rectangle for the inverse image of a screen pixel along with the first integral of the texture map has been developed.< >
