Poor visibility is a common problem when capturing images in participating mediums such as mist or water. The problem of generating a haze-free image based on a hazy one can be described as image dehazing. Previous approaches dealt with this problem using physical models based on priors and simplifications. In this paper, we demonstrate that an end-to-end convolutional neural network is able to learn the dehazing process with no parameters or priors required, resulting in a more generic method. Even though our model is trained entirely with hazy indoor images, we are able to fully restore outdoor images with real haze. Also, we propose an architecture containing the novel Guided Layers, introduced in order to reduce the loss of spatial information while restoring the images. Our method outperforms other machine learning based models, yielding superior results both qualitatively and quantitatively.

One way to synthesize facial expressions is to change an image to represent the desired emotion and it is useful in entertainment, diagnostic and psychiatric disorders therapy applications. Despite several existing approaches, there is little discussion about factors that contribute or hinder the perception of realism in synthetic facial expressions images. After presenting an approach for facial expressions synthesis through the deformation of facial features, this paper provides an evaluation by 155 volunteers regarding the realism of synthesized images. The proposed facial expression synthesis aims to generate new images using two source images (neutral and expressive face) and changing the expression in a target image (neutral face). The results suggest that assignment of realism depends on the type of image (real or synthetic). However, the synthesis presents images that can be considered realistic, especially for the expression of happiness. Finally, while factors such as color difference between subsequent regions and unnatural-sized facial features contribute to less realism, other factors such as the presence of wrinkles contribute to a greater assignment of realism to images.

Dialogue Act classification is a relevant problem for the Natural Language processing field either as a standalone task or when used as input for downstream applications. Despite its importance, most of the existing approaches rely on supervised techniques, which depend on annotated samples, making it difficult to take advantage of the increasing amount of data available in different domains. In this paper, we briefly review the most commonly used datasets to evaluate Dialogue Act classification approaches and introduce the Optimum-Path Forest (OPF) classifier to this task. Instead of using its original strategy to determine the corresponding class for each cluster, we use a modified version based on majority voting, named M-OPF, which yields good results when compared to k-means and Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN), according to accuracy and V-measure. We also show that M-OPF, and consequently OPF, are less sensitive to hyper-parameter tuning when compared to HDBSCAN.

The production of sensory substitution equipment for the visually impaired (VIP) is growing. The aim of this project is to understand the VIP context and predict the risks of collision for the VIP, following an analysis of the position, distance, size and motion of the objects present in their environment. This understanding is refined by data fusion steps applied to the Situation Awareness model to predict possible impacts in the near future. With this goal, a new architecture was designed, composed of systems that detect free passages, static objects, dynamic objects and the paths of these dynamic objects. The detected data was mapped into a 3D plane verifying positions and sizes. For the fusion, a method was developed that compared four more general classifiers in order to verify which presented greater reliability in the given context. These classifiers allowed inferences to be made when analyzing the risks of collision in different directions. The architecture designed for risk prediction is the main contribution of this project.

Person Re-Identification is all about determining a person's entire course as s/he walks around camera-equipped zones. More precisely, person Re-ID is the problem of matching human identities captured from non-overlapping surveillance cameras. In this work, we propose an approach that learns a new low-dimensional metric space in an attempt to cut down multi-camera matching errors. We represent the training and test samples by concatenating handcrafted features. Then, the method performs a two-step ranking using elementary distance metrics and followed by an ensemble of weighted binary classifiers. We validate our approach on CUHK01 and PRID450s datasets, providing only a sample per class for probe and only a sample for gallery (single-shot). According to the experiments, our method achieves CMC Rank-1 results up to 61.1 and 75.4, following leading literature protocols, for CUHK01 and PRID450s, respectively.

Transfer learning is seen as one of the most promising areas of machine learning. Lately, features from pre-trained models have been used to achieve state-of-the-art results in several machine vision problems. Those models are usually employed when the problem of interest does not have enough supervised examples to support the network training from scratch. Most applications use networks pre-trained on noise-free RGB image datasets, what is observed even when the target domain counts on grayscale images or when data is degraded by noise. In this paper, we evaluate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) on such transfer learning scenarios and the impact of using RGB trained networks on grayscale image tasks. Our results confirm that the use of networks trained using colored images on grayscale tasks hinders the overall performance when compared to a similar network trained on a quantized version of the original dataset. Results also show that higher quantization levels (resulting in less colors) increase the robustness of CNN features in the presence of noise.

A feature learning task involves training models that are capable of inferring good representations (transformations of the original space) from input data alone. When working with limited or unlabelled data, and also when multiple visual domains are considered, methods that rely on large annotated datasets, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), cannot be employed. In this paper we investigate different auto-encoder (AE) architectures, which require no labels, and explore training strategies to learn representations from images. The models are evaluated considering both the reconstruction error of the images and the feature spaces in terms of their discriminative power. We study the role of dense and convolutional layers on the results, as well as the depth and capacity of the networks, since those are shown to affect both the dimensionality reduction and the capability of generalising for different visual domains. Classification results with AE features were as discriminative as pre-trained CNN features. Our findings can be used as guidelines for the design of unsupervised representation learning methods within and across domains.

3D CAD models are widely used to improve management of large-scale engineering projects. Examples include Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Oil & Gas industrial plants. Maintaining these facilities is a critical task that often involves anti-corrosive painting of equipment and metallic structures. Existing CAD software estimates the painting area including hidden surfaces that are not actually painted in the field. To improve these computations, we propose an approach based on Adaptively-Sampled Distance Fields (ADFs) exploiting the relationship between object areas and Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) operations. Tests with synthetic models demonstrate that our technique achieves an accuracy of 99%. In real-world 3D CAD models, we were able to reduce the estimated area by 38% when compared to the naïve calculations. These result in significant cost savings in material provision and workforce required for maintaining these facilities.

Fingerprints are the most widely deployed biometric characteristics. However, the recognition of a fingerprint may be influenced by a lot of factors (e.g., skin conditions, sensor conditions) and a matching algorithm is highly affected by the quality of the images involved. This work proposes a novel method for Fingerprint Quality Assessment (FQA) based on the analysis of the Gabor filters response on a fingerprint image. The correlation between the worst quality templates and the matching score has also been analyzed. The method is validated on FVC2000DB3, FVC2004DB2, FVC2004DB3, and FVC2006DB3 databases. This work was compared to other FQAs in order to evaluate performance and with different matching algorithms for fair comparison. The results found pointed that the proposed method is able to identify the images which most affect the error rates of an AFIS, better than the other methods presented in the literature.

In this work we address the problem of landmark recognition. We extend PlaNet, a model based on deep neural networks that approaches the problem of landmark recognition as a classification problem and performs the recognition of places around the world. We propose an extension of the PlaNet technique in which we use a voting scheme to perform the classification, dividing the image into previously defined regions and inferring the landmark based on these regions. The prediction of the model depends not only on the information of the features learned by the deep convolutional neural network architecture during training, but also uses local information from each region in the image for which the classification is made. To validate our proposal, we performed the training of the original PlaNet model and our variation using a database built with images from Flickr, and evaluated the models in the Paris and Oxford Buildings datasets. It was possible to notice that the addition of image division and voting structure improves the accuracy result of the model by 5-11 percentage points on average, reducing the level of ambiguity found during the inference of the model.
