In the framework of the image Foresting Transform (IFT), there is a class of connectivity functions that were vaguely explored, which corresponds to the non-smooth connectivity functions (NSCF). These functions are more adaptive to cope with the problems of field in homogeneity, which are common in MR images of 3 Tesla. In this work, we investigate the NSCF from the standpoint of theoretical and experimental aspects. We formally classify several non-smooth functions according to a proposed diagram representation. Then, we investigate some theoretical properties for some specific regions of the diagram. Our analysis reveals that many NSCFs are, in fact, the result of a sequence of optimizations, each of them involving a maximal set of elements, in a well-structured way. Our experimental results indicate that substantial improvements can be obtained by NSCFs in the 3D segmentation of MR images of 3 Tesla, when compared to smooth connectivity functions. © 2013 IEEE.

Clusters of nodes composed of manycore GPUs and multicore CPUs are used to solve scientific problems with high computational requirements. The development and optimization of parallel-heterogeneous codes for these systems is a complex task which requires a deep knowledge of the different components of the hybrid, heterogeneous and hierarchical computational system, and also of the scientific problem to be solved and the different programing paradigms to be used for its efficient solution. Techniques for efficient development and optimization of scientific codes for these systems are needed. This paper presents an analysis of the development and optimization of the 3D-Fast Wavelet Transform (3D-FWT) for a heterogeneous cluster of multicores+GPUs. Different parallel programming paradigms (message passing, shared memory and SIMD GPU) are combined to fully exploit the computing capacity of the different computational elements of the cluster, so resulting in an efficient combination of basic codes developed previously for individual components (individual nodes, multicore or GPU) and an important reduction of the compression time of long video sequences.

The swallowing process affects several aspects of one's welfare, as nutrition, hydration, respiration and hearing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been a valuable tool to study swallowing, since it is a non-invasive procedure that can dynamically capture the shapes of the tongue and other elements involved in the process. The resolution enhancement of the MRI frames support directly diseases diagnoses, helping the visual analysis, or can be a pre-processing tool to segmentation, classification, recognition or modelling. MRI frames with better resolution, with less blurring or noise can be obtained changing the acquisition process, or using more powerful devices, but the cost of this solution is higher than applying computational Super-Resolution (SR) techniques. This paper studies a Bayesian approach to provide a Wiener filter to regularize the conjugate gradient solution, and promote an adaptation of an iterative SR method for non-rigid registration that can be generalized to other iterative SR methods. © 2013 IEEE.

We illustrate the suitability of Conformal Geometric Algebra for representing deformable mesh models. State-of-the-art modeling tools allow the user to deform 3D models (or region of interest) by selecting sets of points on the surface, called 'handles', and move them freely. The deformed surface should look 'naturally' stretched and bent. Mesh representations based on Conformal Geometric Algebra extend, quite naturally, the existing deformable mesh representations by introducing rigid-body-motion handles, a.k.a 'motor handles', instead of just translation handles. We show how these mesh representations conduct to a fast and easy formulation for the Spline-aligned deformation and a formulation for linear surface deformation based on generalized barycentric coordinates. Also, we reformulate the Free-Form Deformation (FFD), Harmonic Coordinates (HC) and As-Rigid-As-Possible (ARAP) Surface Modeling into the Conformal Geometric Algebra framework and discuss the advantages of these reformulations. © 2013 IEEE.

Level-set methods have proven to be powerful and flexible for computer vision and medical imaging applications. Unfortunately, their drawback is the high computational effort required, which hampers the applicability to imaging tools for real clinical use. A new interactive 3D segmentation tool is presented, addressing operational speed issues by computing level-set surface models interactively. Real time segmentation is achieved by implementing a sparse field level-set solver on the graphics processing Unit. The tool enables users - even non-expert - to produce good, reliable segmentations in a short time and with few training. A validation study is ongoing addressing wrist bone segmentations in magnetic resonance images of patients affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis. Preliminary positive results of qualitative and quantitative validation are presented and discussed at the end of the paper.

computer simulation of realistic crowd behavior has been the focus of active research for more than two decades now. In crowd simulation, there is usually a trade-off between performance and realistic crowd behavior. In this paper, we propose a model, based on potential fields, that enables the introduction of many behaviors in crowd simulations, while keeping good performance. The model uses multiple groups to guide agents to various different goals in the environment, and combines potential fields and reciprocal velocity obstacles (RVO) approaches, where the first sets the preferred velocities of the agents according to their current goals, whereas the second makes the agents avoid collisions. We used three scenarios to demonstrate the capabilities of our model for simulating crowds in which the agents present greater variety of behaviors in real-time without using a complex architecture. © 2013 IEEE.

Data below 1 mm voxel size is getting more and more common in the clinical practice but it is still hard to obtain a consistent collection of such datasets for medical image processing research. With this paper we provide a large collection of Contrast Enhanced (CE) Computed Tomography (CT) data from porcine animal experiments and describe their acquisition procedure and peculiarities. We have acquired three CE-CT phases at the highest available scanner resolution of 57 porcine livers during induced respiratory arrest. These phases capture contrast enhanced hepatic arteries, portal venous veins and hepatic veins. Therefore, we provide scan data that allows for a highly accurate reconstruction of hepatic vessel trees. Several datasets have been acquired during Radio-Frequency Ablation (RFA) experiments. Hence, many datasets show also artificially induced hepatic lesions, which can be used for the evaluation of structure detection methods.

The advent of the WEB 2.0 has given rise to an interesting phenomenon: there is currently much more data than what can be effectively analyzed without relying on sophisticated automatic tools. Some of these tools, which target the organization and extraction of useful knowledge from this huge amount of data, rely on machine learning and data or text mining techniques, specifically automatic document classification algorithms. However, these algorithms are still a computational challenge because of the volume of data that needs to be processed. Some of the strategies available to address this challenge are based on the parallelization of ADC algorithms. In this work, we present GPU-NB, a parallel version of one of the most widely used document classification algorithms, the Naive Bayes, that uses graphics processing units (GPUs). In our evaluation using 6 different document collections, we show that the GPU-NB can maintain the same classification effectiveness (in most cases) while increasing the efficiency by up to 34x faster than its sequential version using CPU. GPU-NB is also up to 11x faster than a CPU-based parallel implementation of Naive Bayes running with 4 threads. Moreover, assuming an optimistic behavior of the CPU parallelization, GPU-NB should outperform the CPU-based implementation with up to 32 cores, at a small fraction of the cost. We also show that the efficiency of the GPU-NB parallelization is impacted by features of the document collections, particularly the number of classes, although the density of the collection (average number of occurrences of terms per document) has a significant impact as well.

If a photograph is reproduced "faithfully", i.e. preserving the relative colorimetric values of the original scene, the resulting image will often look less colorful and less contrasted than the original scene due to some mechanisms of the human visual system. Film and digital cameras must compensate these effects in order to obtain visually pleasing images, which reproduce the appearance of the original scene. This problem occurs also in high dynamic range (HDR) photography, and tone mapped images may appear slightly hazy if the aforementioned visual effects are not compensated. In this paper we shall briefly recall the technique used by most cameras (both film-based and digital) and show one possible theoretical motivation based on a model of brightness perception. We shall then propose a simple technique which compensates the loss of colorfulness and contrast in tone mapped images, and show in particular how this technique can be combined with a tone mapping operator we recently proposed. Finally, we shall compare the results with those produced by a related method.

The main objective of Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) systems is to retrieve a ranked list containing the most similar images of a collection given a query image, by taking into account their visual content. Although these systems represent a very promising approach, in many situations is very challenging to assure the quality of returned ranked lists. Supervised approaches rely on training data and information obtained from user interactions to identify and then improve low-quality results. However, these approaches require a lot of human efforts which can be infeasible for many systems. In this paper, we present two novel unsupervised measures for estimating the effectiveness of ranked lists in CBIR tasks. Given an estimation of the effectiveness of ranked lists, many CBIR systems can, for example, emulate the training process, but now without any user intervention. Improvements can also be achieved on several unsupervised approaches, such as re-ranking and rank aggregation methods, once the estimation measures can help to consider more relevant information by distinguishing effective from non-effective ranked lists. Both proposed measures are computed using a novel image representation of ranked lists and distances among images considering a given dataset. The objective is to exploit the visual patterns encoded in the image representations for estimating the effectiveness of ranked lists. Experiments involving shape, color, and texture descriptors demonstrate that the proposed approaches can provide accurate estimations of the quality in terms of effectiveness of ranked lists. The use of proposed measures are also evaluated in image retrieval tasks aiming at improving the effectiveness of rank aggregation approaches. © 2013 IEEE.
