Currently, computers can be composed of different processing Units (PUs) - general-purpose and also programmable and specialist-purpose. One of the goals for such heterogeneity is to improve applications' performance. Particularly, scientific applications can highly benefit from this kind of platform. They produce large amounts of data within several types of algorithms;and distinct PUs are an alternative to better execute such tasks. This work presents a new system box - composed of CPU, GPU, and FPGA - to carry on site X-ray image evaluations. It was firstly tested by evaluating the performance of a Linear Integration (LI) algorithm over the PUs. This algorithm is largely used by synchrotron experiments in which high-speed X-ray cameras produce extremely large amounts of data for post-processing analysis, which includes performing LI. In our experiments, LI execution was around 30x faster in FPGA compared to CPU, achieving a similar performance to GPU. Taking the end-to-end application, i.e, image transfer into memory, this rate increases to hundreds. Issues for using FPGAs as a co-processor under our dynamic scheduling framework is also discussed. Synthesizing times for LI when assigned to FPGA are still too long for dynamic scheduling, preventing online synthesizing of functions not designed a priori.

In this paper we present a user study on the use of Depth of Field for depth perception in Direct Volume Rendering. Direct Volume Rendering with Phong shading and perspective projection is used as the baseline. Depth of Field is then added to see its impact on the correct perception of ordinal depth. Accuracy and response time are used as the metrics to evaluate the usefulness of Depth of Field. The onsite user study has two parts: static and dynamic. Eye tracking is used to monitor the gaze of the subjects. From our results we see that though Depth of Field does not act as a proper depth cue in all conditions, it can be used to reinforce the perception of which feature is in front of the other. The best results (high accuracy & fast response time) for correct perception of ordinal depth occurs when the front feature (out of the two features users were to choose from) is in focus and perspective projection is used.

Semi-Global Matching (SGM) is arguably one of the most popular algorithms for real-time stereo vision. It is already employed in mass production vehicles today. Thinking of applications in intelligent vehicles (and fully autonomous vehicles in the long term), we aim at further improving SGM regarding its accuracy. In this study, we propose a straight-forward extension of the algorithm's parametrization. We consider individual penalties for different path orientations, weighted integration of paths, and penalties depending on intensity gradients. In order to tune all parameters, we applied evolutionary optimization. For a more efficient offline optimization and evaluation, we implemented SGM on graphics hardware. We describe the implementation using CUDA in detail. For our experiments, we consider two publicly available datasets: the popular Middlebury benchmark as well as a synthetic sequence from the. enpeda. project. The proposed extensions significantly improve the performance of SGM. The number of incorrect disparities was reduced by up to 27.5% compared to the original approach, while the runtime was not increased.

We present a new software framework for the development of immersive collaborative virtual reality applications with emphasis on full-body interaction with virtual humans. The framework is designed to be scalable and adaptable to different hardware configurations, using either commodity or more expensive hardware setups. High level programming abstractions handle object replication and communication channels for configurations based on multiple rendering nodes. The system provides tools for full-body character animation, real-time full-body tracking and retargeting to virtual humans, including motion reconstruction from a small set of sensors. Such capabilities allow new full-body interaction metaphors to be developed in fixed or user-perspective stereo visualization. The framework is scalable, customizable, cross-platform and it is only based on tools with source code available.
