Detecting vanishing points in digital images is important for 3D reconstruction of a scene using uncalibrated cameras. We present a new vanishing point detection algorithm based on the normalized unit sphere that not only bounds the search space but treats the finite vanishing points and the vanishing points at infinity in the same manner. The experimental results using synthetic and real data demonstrate the efficacy and performance of this algorithm. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, a pixel-parallel image sensor/processor architecture with a fine-grain massively parallel SIMD analogue processor array is overviewed and the latest VLSI implementation, SCAMP-3 vision chip, comprising 128128 array, fabricated in a 0.35m CMOS technology, is presented. Examples of real-time image-processing executed on the chip are shown. Sensor-level data reduction, wide dynamic range and adaptive sensing algorithms, enabled by the sensor-processor integration, are discussed. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a new implantable electronic device dedicated for neural stimulation and monitoring. In addition to neuro-stimulation, this device includes impedance telemetry capabilities. The architecture of the proposed device is presented with a focus on its impedance measurement and telemetry. Assuming an equivalent parallel RC network for the electrodes-tissues contact impedance, resistance and capacitance can be measured with less than 5% and 15% errors respectively. Data is sent wirelessly to an external controller at 1 kbps data transmission rate. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper concerns the design of a biotelemetry device dedicated to monitor the complex impedance of the electrode-tissues contacts (ETC) on long term implantations. It consists of an implantable wireless device performing the proposed measurement technique, and an external controller supporting the bi-directional communications between a PC and the implant It uses a digital sine waveform approach to stimulate the ETC while recording 256 samples of the restituted potential. Experimental validation confirms frequency and amplitude can be respectively set within the range of 4 Hz-210 kHz, and ± 14A1.5mA. © 2006 IEEE.

Data fusion systems is an active research field with applications in several fields such as manufacturing, surveillance, air traffic control, robotics and remote sensing. The wide interest in wireless sensor networks has fueled the interest in data fusion as a medium to compress and interpret the collected data from the spatially distributed sensors. The present paper gives a general overview on the current state of data fusion schemes for wireless sensor networks. Specifically this paper presents a review on some of the commonly used techniques such as Kalman filtering, beamforming, transferable belief model, filter-based techniques and linear mean square estimator. © 2006 IEEE.

The wireless link quality is time and space varying, depending on the environment and interference. In order to make efficient use of the scarce channel resource during topology formation, scheduling and routing, it is vital to understand the quality of the links in the wireless mesh network (in terms of, e.g., probability of successful transmission or signal to noise ratio). The existing approaches for link assessment consume substantial amount of time and thus introduce significant delay and overhead. In this research, we derive the necessary condition that ensures fast link assessment, where the link assessment packets are transmitted efficiently according to a set of nonconstant weight codes, which achieves low collision probability within a short link assessment period. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper concerns the design of integrate d high-voltage circuits for ultrasonic sensing interface. It includes a DC-DC converter, a drive amplifier/HVoperational amplifier, and a tuneable pulse generator. The drive amplifier is based on floating gate technique used to reduce its power and area. A 0.8 μm CMOS/DMOS process with supply voltage of 5V/400V is used An output voltage of up to 200 V is obtained from the DC-DC converter. Also, the drive amplifier generates spikes up to 148 V, with rise and fall times of 67 ns and 58 ns respectively. The peak current flowing through the transducer element can be as high as 200 mA. © 2006 IEEE.

A wide area sensor system is a complex, dynamic, resource constrained collection of sensing devices. Typically, queries are sent out by master node(s) and query-satisfying data are aggregated at optimized points in a sensor network and sent back to master node(s). If patterns of queries sent out by master node(s) are studied, replies can be sent back based on patterns observed. This would be especially beneficial in saving energy for large heterogeneous sensor network whose nodes ' location is partially unknown and could change. The contribution of this paper is to propose two simple learning algorithms (block based, incremental learning) to learn about the pattern of queries and also to use an associated sensor and data (ASD). Initial results show promising energy savings with this scheme when compared to flooding. © 2006 IEEE.

Tenet architecture is a two-tier sensor network architecture that provides a model to implement more complex algorithms due to incorporation of less resource-restricted nodes. Stargate-class nodes called masters form the upper tier while resource-restricted nodes named motes compose the lower tier. This paper introduces a dala fusion scheme for a tenet architecture based on the correlation coefficients between data set extracted from the motes. Each master selects four sentinels to calculate the direction in which an event has been detected and then uses this data as a base data to calculate the correlation coefficient for the incoming data. The aggregate output is a result of a weighted sum of the data collected from the N sensors. The weights are calculated based on the correlation coefficients. The aggregated output is compared with a Linear Means Square (LMS) estimator based on variance. The proposed scheme achieves good performance. © 2006 IEEE.
