A fully-integrated, low-power 1830 MHz voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) used in the frequency synthesizer of an implantable wireless multisensor microsystem (IWSM) dedicated to in vivo monitoring of biological parameters is presented. The VCO, implemented in a 90-nm CMOS process, draws 380 μA from a 1-V supply. Post-layout simulations show that the amplitude of oscillations is 450 mV, the phase-noise is -120 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from the carrier and the frequency tuning range is 100 MHz.

The wireless link quality is time and space varying, depending on the environment and interference. In order to make efficient use of the scarce channel resource during topology formation, scheduling and routing, it is vital to understand the quality of the links in the wireless mesh network (in terms of e.g., probability of successful transmission or signal to noise ratio). The existing approaches for link assessment consume substantial amount of time and thus introduce significant delay and overhead. In this research, we derive the necessary condition that ensures fast link assessment, where the link assessment packets are transmitted efficiently according to a set of non-constant weight codes, which achieves low collision probability within a short link assessment period.

Many systems and data processing for 3D vision have been designed but few have targeted real-time embedded systems. We present in this article Cyclope, an original real-time embedded multi-spectral 3D vision sensor. For this, we have developed a new digital processing architecture to reconstruct the 3D information from images. This architecture conforms to embedded system constrains as power dissipation and limited resources. It's a massively-parallel architecture in a totally scalable IP to assure the compatibility with several processing schemes. This architecture has been implemented on a FPGA target and we have obtained accurate results while ensuring realtime operations.

This paper concerns the design of a biotelemetry device dedicated to monitor the complex impedance of the electrode-tissues contacts (ETC) on long term implantations. It consists of an implantable wireless device performing the proposed measurement technique, and an external controller supporting the bi-directional communications between a PC and the implant. It uses a digital sine waveform approach to stimulate the ETC while recording 256 samples of the restituted potential. Experimental validation confirms frequency and amplitude can be respectively set within the range of 4Hz~210kHz, and±14μA~1.5mA.

Autonomous robots are currently receiving an increasing attention in the scientific community as well as in the industry. This is due to the upcoming applications in the field of service robotics. The first requirement for a robot to be able to do such tasks is to navigate successfully to desired locations in its environment. This paper investigates a perception system for topological navigation using real time laser information. The newly developed door detection system is named "space and edge detection laser range finder" or SEDLRF. SEDLRF detects space between door edges enabling fast door detection. Various experimental results show the performance of the presented system in detecting various doors by filtering at least 10 times of the detected points. SEDLRF achieves good performance with higher robot speed than other door detection systems.

Tenet architecture is a two-tier sensor network architecture that provides a model to implement more complex algorithms due to incorporation of less resource-restricted nodes. Stargate-class nodes called masters form the upper tier while resource-restricted nodes named motes compose the lower tier. This paper introduces a data fusion scheme for a tenet architecture based on the correlation coefficients between data set extracted from the motes. Each master selects four sentinels to calculate the direction in which an event has been detected, and then uses this data as a base data to calculate the correlation coefficient for the incoming data. The aggregate output is a result of a weighted sum of the data collected from the N sensors. The weights are calculated based on the correlation coefficients. The aggregated output is compared with a linear means square (LMS) estimator based on variance. The proposed scheme achieves good performance.

This paper presents a global architecture of a range finder system based on the stereoscopic principle. The proposed system is dedicated to a visual intracortical stimulator in order to create artificial vision for people suffering from visual blindness. The 3D analysis of the environment is required allowing a better autonomy to the patient. The proposed device consists of an emitter projecting a light pattern from an infrared light source reflecting on a micromirror matrix. Images from the illuminated scene are captured by a camera. The three-dimensional range is reconstructed from the distortions in the reflected and captured image. Our approach to encode light patterns consists of taking advantage of a high-speed camera and adapting the Gray coded patterns to dynamic scenes.

We propose a distributed wireless multicast protocol based on 2-hop neighbor information. A unique feature of our algorithm is that the formation of the multicast tree is done during the media access stage and requires little additional message exchanging. Each node only needs to keep track the receiving status for all nodes within its 2-hop neighborhood, leading to a very light protocol. The effectiveness of our approach also comes from a novel MAC layer solution which can quickly resolve the multicast CTS collisions. We conducted detailed simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol. Simulation results indicate that our protocol offers considerable improvement in multicast turnaround time and has superior energy/packet performance.

The clustering ensembles combine multiple partitions of a given data into a single clustering solution of better quality. Clustering ensembles has emerged as a powerful method for improving both the robustness and the stability of unsupervised classification solutions. One of the major problems in clustering ensembles is the consensus function. Finding final partition from different clustering results needs expertness and robustness. In this paper we proposed the genetic algorithm in combination with co-association function as consensus function. With special mutation and one point crossover; GA tries to obtain the best partition. It refers to co-association function values for fitness function parameters. Fast convergence, simplicity, robustness and high accuracy are the most properties of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed method on common datasets.

Early and effective diagnosis of sepsis is made possible with the detection of specific biomarkers. This requires the design of a specific and sensitive immunoassay biointerface. In this proceeding, we discussed the modelling and implementation of a novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) interface featuring nano-gratings and selective surface biochemical functionalization. Simulation suggests that such an interface enhances the sensitivity of SPR systems.
