This paper concerns the design of integrated high-voltage circuits for ultrasonic sensing interface. It includes a DC-DC converter, a drive amplifier/HV operational amplifier, and a tuneable pulse generator. The drive amplifier is based on floating gate technique used to reduce its power and area. A 0.8 μm CMOS/DMOS process with supply voltage of 5V/400 V is used. An output voltage of up to 200V is obtained from the DC-DC converter. Also, the drive amplifier generates spikes up to 148V, with rise and fall times of 67 ns and 58 ns respectively. The peak current flowing through the transducer element can be as high as 200mA.

A wide area sensor system is a complex, dynamic, resource constrained collection of sensing devices. Typically, queries are sent out by master node(s) and query-satisfying data are aggregated at optimized points in a sensor network and sent back to master node(s). If patterns of queries sent out by master node(s) are studied, replies can be sent back based on patterns observed. This would be especially beneficial in saving energy for large heterogeneous sensor network whose nodes' location is partially unknown and could change. The contribution of this paper is to propose two simple learning algorithms (block based, incremental learning) to learn about the pattern of queries and also to use an associated sensor and data (ASD). Initial results show promising energy savings with this scheme when compared to flooding.

This paper describes a new approach to implement the 5/3 integer lifting scheme for the wavelet transform on a VLIW CPU core, with the goal to improve computational performance in terms of cycles and memory accesses. The lifting scheme is part of the most recent standard for image coding (JPEG2000), for which a highly optimized software implementation is mandatory on embedded processor systems. We use one such processor as reference, to highlight the requirements on VLIW architectures that offer a limited form of instruction level parallelism and a fixed ratio of memory-to-general purpose instructions within a long word. We show that a careful analysis of the data access typical of the lifting scheme allows reducing by a factor of over 60% data misses and execution times measured in clock cycles with respect to a straightforward implementation.

We describe the design of an embedded neural network for signal processing in a small size, battery operated multiband fluorometer device with pattern recognition capabilities. The network was implemented in a Xilinx Spartan 3 FPGA with a microBlaze soft CPU core. The microBlaze subsystem occupied 527 slices and required 16 kB of RAM for program and data storage. It handled all the neural network functions of spectral signature analysis and pattern recognition and had a processing speed of 1 ms per input pattern. The microBlaze CPU also managed user interaction. The whole system fit in a XC3S400 device.

The paper describes two cooperating strategies among several homogeneous agents to reach a given target. In our case we used the prey-predators paradigm in which a set of agents (predators) have the purpose to reach a target (prey). The problem is addressed as an optimization problem that has been faced with two different algorithms (a genetic algorithm and a particle swam optimization algorithm). The two approaches are evaluated by using a simulator for each strategy and the results show that the strategies are very different in terms of prey-predator successes. Genetic algorithm can be used by the prey to solve at the best the problem to reach the lair, otherwise the particle swarm optimization method allows the predator to reach a target in a fast way.

Wireless sensor network systems depend on many interrelated system parameters. The associated design space is vast, and effective optimization in this space is challenging. In this paper, we introduce a system-level design methodology to find efficient configurations for an application-specific sensor network system where optimization of energy consumption is a primary implementation criterion. This methodology incorporates fine-grained, system-level energy models; analyzes critical parameters of candidate off-the-shelf components; integrates the associated parameters into a comprehensive optimization framework; and applies optimized configurations to the actual hardware implementation of the targeted sensor network system. The results of fidelity analysis of the models that underlie our optimization framework together with the results of our hardware implementation demonstrate the accuracy and applicability of our methodology and supporting tools for optimized configuration of application-specific sensor networks.

Sensor network generally detects target at a fixed frequency. Detection interval means time spacing between two adjacent detection attempts. While designing a sensor network for detection of target intrusion in a specific region, the interval should be carefully set with trade-off between power consumption and detection performance. This is because redundant power may be consumed if it is too short and the target may be missed if too long. In this paper, we study the determination of the maximum detection interval (MDI) with specified detection performance. Path exposure is adopted as a performance metric. For detection-oriented application, a novel method to evaluate the minimum path exposure (MPE) is developed. Then the MDI problem is formulated and its solution is presented. The factors influencing the MDI are extensively simulated.

In this paper we present a way of making web services and ontologies work together. We have developed a software that exploits the ontology descriptions of web services in order to help their composition. Our system automatically generates and stores the whole ontology layer in a relational database; within this approach, a sort of caching system is created which, starting from managed web services, creates a knowledge base without continuously convert the Web Service description to its ontology equivalent. We choose to make this logic layer invisible and to let the final user interact with a simple and straightforward graphical interface that both manages the ontology and the actual composition. We will point out pros and cons of using some specific implementations of the state of the art languages that can be used to build such a system, also underlining that we adopt open source solutions only.

This paper introduces an online load balanced energy-aware routing protocol for large-scale wireless sensor networks. The protocol designed, namely traffic-aware energy efficient (TAEE) routing protocol, exploits traffic load information in addition to power residue levels to optimize the load distribution of the entire sensor network, and thus accomplish longer network lifetime. An algorithm for adaptively computing the best parameter for TAEE is also described. Furthermore, to better accommodate larger-scale wireless sensor networks, our TAEE protocol can be adapted to include a random grouping scheme which implements hierarchical routing to reduce computation and routing overhead and to maintain energy efficiency. Our simulation shows that the TAEE protocol generates better performance in terms of network lifetime compared with the leading power-aware Max-min zPmin protocol.

In this paper, a facial image recognition system based on 3D real-time facial imaging system is proposed. Based on the vector map and intensity image obtained by three-phase correlation image sensor, the differential geometry theory is employed to find the key points of face image, according to these key points, the 3D facial image in different pose is correction. In this paper, the traditional eigenface algorithm is extended to the complex-valued eigenface based on the 3D imaging system; the complex-valued eigenface algorithm could take advantage more facial information than the normal eigenface technique. The experiments show that the performance for our test is very satisfactory.
