3D moment invariants are traditionally based on region characteristics and the location of every pixel point, this will cause high calculation cost. In this paper, a novel shape representation named 3D gray level moment invariants is constructed. Some properties of the new representation including the independence of the translation, scaling and rotation transforms are proved. Experiments indicate an encouraging high recognition rates without reducing the recognition performance compared with traditional methods.

This paper introduces a non-contact virtual mouse controlled by tracking the face movement. It is specially designed for the disabled with mobility impairments in the upper extremities. The whole work is based on the common web camera. Improved optical flow algorithm is proposed through locating the facial features defined by active appearance model. Iris recognition is a powerful biometrics for personal identification, but it is difficult to acquire good-quality iris images in real time. For making iris recognition more convenient to use, we design an iris recognition system at a distance about 3 meters. There are many key issues to design such a system, including iris image acquisition, human-machine-interface and image processing. In this paper, we respectively introduce how we deal with these problems and accomplish the engineering design. Experiments show that our system is convenient to use at the distance of 3 meters and the recognition rate is not worse than the state-of-the-art close-range systems.

In this paper, an intelligent recognition system of phacoemulsification instrument is developed to solve some defects of current phacoemulsification cataract surgery, such as low automatic level of operation, over reliance on the ability of surgeons. The system, which utilizes patternrecognition technologies, can automatically analyze the video information of the operation process, track the emulsification probe, grade the hardness of lens nuclear and control the release of ultrasonic energy. This designed system has been tested with real microscope videos of phacoemulsification. Experimental results show that our system can largely reduce the complexity and difficulty of the cataract operation, and effectively raise the automatic level of phacoemulsification instruments.

This paper proposed a fuzzy control system based on oscillator networks for the locomotion control of the quadruped robot whose legs have no yaw freedom. The oscillator networks are used to generate stable, synchronized leg gait signal for the locomotion of the robot. The fuzzy controller is introduced to tune the parameters of the oscillator networks for generating adaptive leg motion curve for the out-door environments. The fuzzy controller consist four adaptive fuzzy rules sets to deal with the different out-door environments, respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is examined in a virtual environment by computer simulations.

In this paper, we propose to kernelize linear learning machines, e.g., PCA and LDA, in the empirical kernel feature space, a finite-dimensional embedding space, in which the distances of the data in the kernel feature space are preserved. The empirical kernel feature space provides a unified framework for the kernelization of all kinds of linear machines: performing a linear machine in the finite-dimensional empirical feature space, its nonlinear kernel machine is then established in the original input data space. This method is different from the conventional kernel-trick based kernelization, and more importantly, the final nonlinear kernel machines, called empirical kernel machines, are shown to be more efficient in many real-world applications, such as face recognition and facial expression recognition, than the kernel-trick based kernel machines.

This paper presents a radical-based on-line handwritten chinese character recognition method, which integrates appearance-based radical recognition and geometric context into a principled framework using a character-radical dictionary to guide radical segmentation and recognition during path search. To solve the connection between radicals, we detect corner points to extract sub-strokes. Based on the hierarchical structure, the character pattern is over-segmented by three-layer nested pre-segmentation. For recognition, we use two dictionary representation schemes and accordingly different search algorithms. We have implemented the approach to chinese characters of left-right and up-down structures. Experimental results on a sample set of 5,773 character classes consisting of 1,149 radicals demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Identification of sentiment orientation in chinese words is essential for getting sentiment comprehension of chinese text, and building a basic semantic lexicon with chinese emotional words will provide a core subset for identifying emotional words in a special area. It can not only help to identify and enlarge semantic lexicon in corpus effectively but also improve classification efficiency. On the basis of the similarity of chinese words, the paper has proposed a method of calculating sentiment weight of chinese emotional words. In addition, a dictionary with basic chinese emotional words has been constructed based on the HowNet semantic lexicon. By utilizing the dictionary together with TF-IDF, we have done experiments to identify sentiment orientation in chinese text and have got satisfying classification result.

joint Factor Analysis (JFA) has become the state-of-the-art technique in the problem of speaker verification [1, 2]. At the same time, the training of eigenvoice matrix seems to be a heavy burden to us, because it requires lots of multi-channel data, which largely determines the performance of the system. In this paper, we first try to exploit an upper bound performance of the JFA system in a non-normal way, and then proposed a new technique which we referred as Residual Factor Analysis (RFA), in which we replace the eigenvoice matrix in JFA system with the residual vector, to remove the heavy burden of training eigenvoice matrix. We tested the proposed technique on the core condition of NIst 2006 speaker recognition evaluation (SRE 06) and obtained equivalent results to JFA system (equal error rate of about 3.99%)[1], while our method requires no extra multi-channel data except some for training eigenchannel matrix.
