In today's embedded PC market the use of real-time systems is becoming more important everyday. Because of real time system's specific requirements it is a challenge to use standard object oriented notation for design and definition of real-time tasks. Problem of efficient hard real-time system development and use of standard object-oriented notation as a base for high availability solution is a subject of this paper. In this paper, we are focused to show how standard object-oriented notation can be used for design and implementation of specific high availability real-time software solution. We have used real-time Linux extension as a base for real-time device driver for PC/104 synchronous serial adapter. Hard real-time requirements of synchronous serial communication demand a special kind of software design. For meeting hard real-time requirements we have used a standard object oriented notation-UML (unified modeling language). For the purpose of this work, we have used UML notation for real-time device driver design. The device driver designed in this work is used for synchronous serial communication. The results presented in this paper clearly show that the use of UML is one of the best ways for designing hard real-time systems. Also, results achieved in this work are a proof that software designed with standard object oriented notation is capable of satisfying most demanding hard real-time requirements.

The use of object oriented techniques and methodologies for the design of real-time control systems appear to be necessary in order to deal with the increasing complexity of such systems. Many object-oriented methods have been used for the modeling and design of real-time control systems. We believe that an approach that integrates the advancements in both object modeling and design methods, and real-time scheduling theory is the key to successful use of object oriented technology for real-time software. Surprisingly several past approaches to integrate the two either restrict the object models, or do not allow sophisticated schedulability analysis techniques. In this paper we show how schedulability analysis can be integrated with object-oriented design. More specifically, we develop the schedulability and feasibility analysis method for the external messages that may suffer release jitter due to being dispatched by a tick driven scheduler in real-time control system, and we also develop the schedulability method for sporadic activities, where message arrive sporadically then execute periodically for some bounded time. This method can be used to cope with timing constraints in realistic and complex real-time control systems. Using this method, a designer can quickly evaluate the impact of various implementation decisions on schedulability. In conjunction with automatic code-generation, we believe that this greatly streamlines the design and development of real-time control system software.

The paper builds up traffic flow simulated models at signal intersection and describes analysis, design and implementation of software system by applying software engineering theory. The paper makes use of the object-oriented technology which imitates man's thinking to model the rule of vehicle arriving intersection, the rule of lane choice, the rule of vehicle leaving from intersection. The simulation of traffic flow at signal intersection is an up-to-date method to research traffic control. It is expected that this paper contributes to the understanding of how to describe the complicated traffic phenomenon with computer language.

Ch is an embeddableC/C++interpreter. It was developed to allow software developers to use one language, anywhere and everywhere, for any programming task. Ch supports C99, a latest C standard ratified in 1999, and contains salient features for two and three dimensional plotting and numerical computing for applications in engineering and science. Developed in Ch, Ch Control System Toolkit provides a control class with member functions for object-based interactive modeling, analysis, and design of linear time-invariant control systems. The software package, available for downloading on the web, has been widely used in industry to solve practical engineering problems and in universities for instructional improvement. The design and implementation of Ch Control System Toolkit are described in this paper. Two application examples of control system design and analysis using Ch Control System Toolkit demonstrate its power and simplicity.

One of the means to enhance software reliability and quality is testing. The testing for object-oriented software is more complex and difficult than that for traditional programming. For object-oriented class-level and cluster-level testing, we proposed a significant methodology TACLLE which has been published in ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (vol.7., no.3, p.250-95, 1998; vol.10, no.1, p.56-109, 2001). This methodology includes an important algorithm named DOE to determine whether two objects are observational equivalent or not. This paper presents the design and implementation for a new prototype of DOE using object-oriented paradigm. The new prototype is based on UML model. It is improved on the technique, and optimized in the system interface.

There is a wide spread usage of hardware design languages (HDL) to speed up the time to market for the design of modern digital systems. Verification engineers can simulate hardware in order to verify its performance and correctness with help of an HDL. However, simulation can't keep pace with the growth in size and complexity of circuits and has become a bottleneck of the design process. Distributed HDL simulation on a cluster of workstations has the potential to provide a cost effective solution to this problem. We describe the design and implementation of DVS, an object-oriented framework for distributed Verilog simulation. Verilog is an HDL which sees wide industrial use. DVS is an outgrowth of clustered time warp, originally developed for logic simulation. The design of the framework emphasizes simplicity and extensibility and aims to accommodate experiments involving partitioning and dynamic load balancing. Preliminary results obtained by simulating a 16 bit multiplier are presented.

The computational systems developed for power system analyses have' been increased in size and complexity. The majority of this software use old programming techniques and procedural languages such as FORTRAN and PASCAL. object- oriented technology has gained widespread acceptance to overcome the inflexibility of traditional software development, such as maintenance, update and integration of software developed for different programmer's teams. This paper presents a description of the design and implementation of a graphic user interface (GUI) and its integration to a power system framework that is used to develop a distribution system analysis package. Both GUI and power system framework are developed using object-oriented programming (OOP) in C++. The choice of OOP paradigm is due to its modular and hierarchical structure and also capability to make easier the integration, maintenance and reutilization. An example of software and graphical interface, which is used in an electrical utility, demonstrates the proposed approach.

Function blocks (FBs) defined in IEC-PAS 61499-1 will provide us a method to construct industrial process measurement and control systems (IPMCSs) based on object oriented design (OOD). The system model specified in IEC-PAS 61499-1 consists of some devices and each device has some resources. This is represented by regarding virtual machines as resources. In the application model, FBs call each other through the event flow and data held in FBs are exchanged by data flow. design patterns such as "observer pattern" can be applied to representing the event flows of FBs. We can regard the data flow as a particular kind of event flow, and this design pattern is also applied to the data flow. Since we can use easily the event delegation model based on the "observer pattern" in JavaBeans/spl trade/, which is suitable for describing FBs. We propose a representation of FBs using the event delegation model of JavaBeans/spl trade/. The interfaces of FBs are specified in a common way, the interface declaration of FBs can be separated from its implementation and is represented by the abstract classes or interfaces in OOD. We also propose an implementation of FBs using Java/spl trade/ in this paper. We have developed a software tool prototype for engineering and running of FB system.

The object oriented data model is introduced to handle more complex data. Since early optimizers were designed to use with a relatively simple relational data model, new generation of extensible optimizer were developed to meet the requirements of evolving database systems. The query optimization system is assembled by several join relations, the number of joins are evaluated continuously base on the number of inputs and preferred outputs. The Eddy scheme is assembled by pipeline-joins that operated to generate sub-joins that used for search criteria being processed. From the experiment we obtained that the performance of normal-query and optimal-query are better than adaptive-query for searching data under 3000 tuples, however for data over 3000 tuples the performance of adaptive-query is better than normal-query and optimal-query.

An advanced high-level approach for programming of real-time distributed computing applications, the TMO (time-triggered message-triggered object) programming and specification scheme, has been enabled without creating any new language or compiler. Instead, a middleware system named the TMO Support Middleware (TMOSM) and an API that wraps around the execution support services of TMOSM have been established. An approach enabling further reduction of the labor in TMO programming is to let the programmer use a GUI to build structural frames of application TMO networks. The supporting tool called the Visual Studio for TMO (ViSTMO) consists of a GUI part for interactive design of TMO-network structures and a part for automated generation of C++ TMO code-frameworks. The TMO scheme contains mechanisms enabling efficient design of autonomy-rich structures of application systems and ViSTMO provides GUIs for programming the use of those mechanisms among others. The recent expansion and refinement of the functionality of and the implementation techniques used in ViSTMO are discussed in this paper.
