The military software developer has a strong mandate to push technology to its limits for superiority in warfare, both in weapons systems and in command and control (C2) systems;strategically, it is hoped that such superiority will minimize the likelihood of combat. Funding realities dictate shorter time to deployment to gain lower costs, and they demand the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions wherever possible to limit custom development. Reuse of frameworks and architectures promises to shorten design time, and reuse of third-party services and components helps to minimize implementation cycles. Capturing the design-intensive decisions associated with domain-dependent techniques as assets that can be used again and again will vastly simplify the building of future projects. These principles have been proven many times, and the paper includes the author's experiences in demonstrating these savings. In order to provide direction to the software developer, this report presents the US Army's approaches, focusing on Real-Time (RT) CORBA. The author concludes by providing lessons learned from this work and indicates future directions that can improve and extend the use of these technologies for military systems. © 2001 IEEE.

Interactions between objects are too often coded in the way messages are exchanged and methods are called, making it difficult to understand and evolve the way components are interconnected without a deeper analysis of the way objects are designed. Yet, most businesses require high levels of reconfigurability of existing services, which suggests that an explicit model of the coordination that is required between system components should be given immediately during domain modeling. Capitalizing on work in Software Architectures and Coordination Languages, and our experience in the banking industry, this tutorial puts forward the concept of contracts for providing explicit representations of interconnections between objects. Participants will be exposed to a new modeling primitive (contract) that has proved to be highly effective for controlling the complexity of system design and evolution. They will learn how to use it to externalize embedded coordination directives, ending-up with systems that can evolve simply by adding, removing, or replacing interconnections without having to change the other components. Because the concept is intrinsically language-independent, and an implementation pattern is provided, attendees will be able to put it to practice immediately in their working environments.

INTRODUCTION The paper demonstrates object-oriented physical modeling of SI engine control system components. The intake airflow control system is chosen as a typical example including multiple physical domains such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, mechanics, and electromagnetics. The model can be used for balancing the design of system components. design models of different actuators such as a DC motor and a bidirectional solenoid are included and analyzed. The focus is on the multi-domain aspects of modeling of the flow control system and actuator components. The modeling effort with an object-oriented environment is mainly reduced to adequate model representation and creation of a component library. A new object library has been developed using Modelica language in addition to the standard Modelica library. The modeling and simulation software MathModelica [2] has been used for implementing the component library. MathModelica has a convenient interface and operational functionality allowing fast implementation of libraries if an object-oriented representation of a system has been achieved. Models can be created by connecting already available components graphically in a model editor or use so called notebooks for textual modeling. The models are equation-based, i.e., inputs and outputs are not fixed by design in the model (acausal modeling) but depend on how the model is connected to other models. This makes it reusable in a variety of different contexts. This paper reveals the difficulties of the object-oriented representation of the thermo-fluid and electromagnetic physical systems and demonstrates solution approaches. A flow model across the throttle plate has been developed in accordance with the object-oriented paradigm. Different electromagnetic actuators have been modeled to drive the throttle plate. RAPIDware is a collection of software design techniques for constructing adaptive middleware to support collaborative computing. This paper describes an experimental study in the design of adaptive proxy services for resource-limited mobile hosts. The approach is based on detachable Java I/O streams, which enable proxy filters and transcoders to be dynamically inserted deleted and reordered on a given data stream. Unlike conventional Java I/O streams, detachable streams can be stopped disconnected, reconnected. and restarted As such, they provide the "glue" needed to to support the dynamic composition of proxy services. The operation and implementation of detachable streams are described. followed, by a discussion of their use in demand-driven forward error correction services for wireless hosts.

The incorporation of greater functionality into web applications requires use of technologies beyond HTML that integrate interfaces, application servers, database servers, and increasingly back-office applications. design of these web applications has more in common with software engineering than with what has evolved as a highly graphical web site design approach. This paper describes the extension of the unified modeling language (UML) for modeling web applications during the analysis and design phases of a project. The target implementation of the design is done with a new framework called CFobjects, which combines the benefits of object orientation, Cold Fusion which a tag-based language, and the utilization of a rapid application development environment. The UML modeling extensions, web application design methodology, and application of CFobjects is illustrated through a case study of building a commercial web application. The modeling extensions provide a sorely needed tool for web application designers to communicate, design, and reuse objects to rapidly develop enterprise web applications.

With the giant leaps that technology has taken in the past few years. some professions are still largly artistic. A good example of this is the profession of design. designers produce products that are efficient, attractive. practical. but not safe. This is because most Universities around the world fail to include safety and health issues into their curriculum. To overcome that flaw, a rule-based tool was designed to assist designers in pointing out the unsafe conditions in their designs, This tool, that utilizes expert systems technologies. took five years to reach its current version. The tool is called TEXPERT. The latest version of TEXPERT underwent a number of changes and continued growth. This year's efforts resulted in the selection of a focus area and investigations into the selection of two technologies (demolition and decontamination-D&D) by which to validate the program. Validation and expansion of the rule-base continued with an emphasis on those components necessary for D&D. Research in object-oriented prototypes. determination of report-format and approach. and development of an initial visual project builder interface were also accomplished. Latest accomplishments included the development of new components. two-way interactions. and the implementation of a maintainable component database that the user interface can use to build the current library that will be available in the menu system.

Resource sharing for replicated synchronous groupware

We describe problems associated with accessing data resources external to the application, which we term externalities, in replicated synchronous collaborative applications. Accessing externalities such as files, databases, network connections, environment variables, and the system clock is not as straightforward in replicated collaborative software as in single-user applications or centralized collaborative systems. We describe ad hoc solutions that add to development cost and complexity because the developer must program different behavior for different replicas. We introduce a novel general approach to accessing externalities uniformly in a replicated collaborative system. The approach uses a semireplicated architecture where the actual externality resides at a single location and is accessed via replicated proxies. This approach allows developers of replicated synchronous groupware to 1) use similar externality access mechanisms as in traditional single-user applications, and 2) program all replicas to execute the same behavior. We describe a general design for proxied access to read-only, write-only, and read-write externalities and discuss the tradeoffs of this semireplicated approach over full, literal replication and the class of applications to which this approach can be successfully applied. We also describe details of a prototype implementation of this approach within a replicated collaboration-transparency system, called Flexible JAMM (Java Applets Made Multiuser).

An object-oriented river information system (RIS) for WWW-access to distributed environmental data

A service-oriented approach for an open, scalable and generic River Information System (RIS) is presented. In a brief introduction the requirements for such a distributed environmental information system (EIS) in this special field are given. They define the basics for an adequate conceptual and technical system design, based on WWW technology and use of CORBA services. It is shown how and in which way public access and internal administrative data distribution restricts availability of data and system structure. The developed strategic approach leads to an overall system, which is transferable to other EIS. Embedding future needs to provide an elegant solution to incorporate ODBMS access and entries to workflow management systems MFMS). Division in several layers guaranties a maximum of flexibility and scalability. use of CORBA services drives the evolution of this EIS to a decentralised data collection, storing and updating, which is essential for long-term efficiency and user acceptance (keep data where it is collected). Data selection, handling and operations on data are performed by intelligent agents, operating on specified methods in an authorised environment (e.g. server, data, methods and user). The technological architecture of the system and the implementation of selected components and features are described. It is pointed out why such a system must be adaptable to present and future commandments and how this can be realised under controlled conditions for a self-growing system. The complex and sensitive handling of data is highlighted by an example. Some possible lines for WMFS access are given. The potential for automation, quality assurance and controlling is shown. To date, a comfortable solution has been developed, that can be used by decision-makers, administration, industry, scientists and the general public to have access to all environmental data related to rivers. In order to fit the different clinical needs for processing special images from variety of imaging modalities (US, MRI, NM), the PACS viewer should have been developed respectively. In this paper we present a modern object-oriented component object model (COM) technology to develop PACS viewer. The application is split into framework and components based on functionality. They can be developed independently and reused in different systems [1]. According to different usage, we can assemble the application by integrating different pre-built reusable components seamlessly into the framework. Due the open architecture of application, its functions can be extended. PACS viewer will be custom designed as required using this reusable technology that will optimize cost, final design and speed up the development.
