During the last few years there continues to be remarkable growth in telephone call-center systems. There are many applications of call-centers in different areas of business such as in telemarketing, insurance, customer service, electronic commerce, etc. Moreover, in some cases it is reasonable to think of a call-center as an integrated part of a whole business system responsible for the telephone interface with the outside world. Typically, a call center consists of a set of operators, called agents, who process inbound calls from clients. Call processing may involve the use of computer systems (e.g. database), other devices (e.g. fax-machines, interactive voice response units) as well as communication with other agents (e.g. deliver a call to more qualified agent, making a consulted call). The call processing may also produce outbound calls. The treatment of each call being processed is heavily regulated by scenarios called scripts which are specially designed for specific kind's of the calls. The design of such scripts is one of the main problems in call center maintenance. To cope with this problem we need special tools, i.e., scripting language, corresponding editor, related environment. In this paper we present an ongoing project aimed at the design of such a platform. We introduce a Petri net-based model for representation of scripts and a logical structure of the call center. The model, called script-net, is based on object-oriented Petri net dialect belonging to a class of high-level Petri nets. In particular, the model allows one to formally represent scripts their communication with agents and other resources, exception handling time constrains. We also consider some implementation issues. In particular, we outline a visual iconic language specially designed for script specification. The semantics of the language is based on script-nets. We present the architecture, design and experimental research prototype implementation of ChaiTime, an open system architecture for the rapid development of advanced next generation telephony services that overcomes some of the limitations of the current closed PSTN architecture and service model. ChaiTime allows communication sessions to be set up over the PSTN, the Internet, or a combination of both. Services can be provided by multiple cooperating distributed service providers, some of whom may use third party software components which can be "plugged in" or even dynamically downloaded from the network as needed. This allows advanced services to be deployed and delivered to users rapidly; a crucial requirement in the increasingly competitive telecommunications services marketplace. ChaiTime is built upon an object oriented call model called Java Call Control (JCC) which we have defined as a small set of extensions to the standard Java Telephony API (JTAPI) call model that allows support for distributed providers as well as advanced services. JCC hides details of underlying call state management, protocols and hardware from applications. In our prototype, we have designed a small set of extensions to SIP, called Extended SIP, for supporting advanced services. The ChaiTime prototype software is currently operational in our laboratory. We briefly describe its current implementation as well as future work to address issues such as fault tolerance.

A C++ Simulator Generator from Graphical Specifications

Many languages for computer systems simulation (like GPSS and CSim) use a stochastic model of systems with the provision of adding procedural code for those aspects of the system that cannot be captured easily by a stochastic model. However, they do not support the hierachical simulation of complex systems well. Complex computer systems may have to be simulated at various levels of abstraction in the interests of tractability: the flexibility of being able to freely move between the different levels of abstraction is very desirable. For example, in the area of computer architecture, one might have analytical models, detailed simulation models and trace-driven models. In addition, these languages do not have user-friendly interfaces for specification of the simulated system. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of a simulation package for hierachical simulation of non-real-time computer systems: a Simulator Generator from a Graphical System Specification (SIGGSYS}). A new language for system specification has been designed. In addition, the package has the following components: • A graphical user interface to aid specification of the system to be simulated. • A rear end that generates C++ code that implements a simulator for the specified system. • A complete object library along with the header files that implement a functionally complete set of C++ base classes which can be built upon. C++ has been chosen as the intermediate language so that the modeller can use its support for object oriented programming. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Linguistic reflection in Java

Reflective systems allow their own structures to be altered from within. Here we are concerned with a style of reflection, called linguistic reflection, which is the ability of a running program to generate new program fragments and to integrate these into its own execution. In particular, we describe how this kind of reflection may be provided in the compiler-based, strongly typed object-oriented programming language Java. The advantages of the programming technique include attaining high levels of genericity and accommodating system evolution. These advantages are illustrated by an example taken from persistent programming, which shows how linguistic reflection allows functionality (program code) to be generated on demand (Just-In-Time) from a generic specification and integrated into the evolving running program. The technique is evaluated against alternative implementation approaches with respect to efficiency, safety and ease of use. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An object oriented approach to design with modules

The modular design of products leads to a large number of different products by creating distinct combinations of modules and components. This can give each product distinctive functionality, features, and performance levels. The design of modular products is of considerable importance in enabling companies to respond rapidly to changes in the market environment. This paper is concerned with the area of design with modules (DwM), which involves selecting the module combination to best satisfy the given set of requirements. The aim of this paper is to develop an approach for DwM, to meet customer requirements, using modules that come from suppliers that may be geographically separated and on differing computer platforms. An object-oriented approach for DwM, termed object-oriented design with modules (OODwM), is proposed where modules are represented as objects. The proposed OODwM approach is described and the approach is illustrated with an example involving the design of personal computers using the Internet as an implementation environment. The exchangeability inherent in OODwM is shown by exchanging the original selection object in the example implementation with a selection object that includes new constrained evolutionary algorithms. The use of an object-oriented approach for DwM offers several important potential advantages in that the model developed is readily computable, in the reusability of objects, and in the exchangeability of objects with similar interfaces. The main contributions of this paper are fourfold. First, an object-oriented approach to DwM is described. Second, a formalism for DwM using this object-oriented approach is presented. Third, the use of this formalism is illustrated with an Internet-based implementation showing how the formalism can be used for a specific problem, and how objects can be readily exchanged. Fourth, new constrained evolutionary algorithms are presented, together with some initial testing. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Conceptual modelling-based design of object-oriented databases

The focus of this article is the transformation of conceptual data models (such as ER, NIAM and PSM) to object-oriented databases. This transformation is captured within the framework of a two-level architecture. Conceptual models are first mapped to abstract intermediate specifications, which are then transformed to database schemas in a given object-oriented database environment. This enables us to treat different target systems in a uniform way. As final implementation environments, we consider object-oriented as well as object-relational DBMSs, including the SQL3 and ODMG-93 standards. We do not reveal the specific details of these standards. Rather, we use intermediate representations expressed in F-logic, a logic-based abstract specification language for object-oriented systems. Several transformation alternatives are discussed in a formal context, resulting in a collection of design options. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

A purely object-oriented approach for rule-based paradigms

In this paper, I describe an approach for rule-based systems exploiting a purely object-oriented approach. The innovative idea is to consider a new kind of relation between knowledge objects which are believed to model implication relations of production rules. A knowledge base consisting of such objects can be conveniently represented as a Marker Propagating Graph (MPG), which provides rule-based-like representation features. The inference is seen as a marking propagation through the graph. This approach preserves the best of both the object orientation features and expert system functionality. This experimental study concerns the design and the implementation of a medical system for automatic interpretation of biological tests in Preventive Medicine Centers. Because the use of such a system is planned for many years, the possibilities for its future extensions are seriously considered. Programming paradigms in an object-oriented multimedia standard

Of the various programming paradigms in use today, object-orientation is probably the most successful in terms of industrial take-up and application, particularly in the field of multimedia. It is therefore unsurprising that this technology has been adopted by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC24 as the foundation for a forthcoming International Standard for Multimedia, called PREMO. Two important design aims of PREMO are that it be distributable, and that it provides a set of media-related services that can be extended in a disciplined way to support the needs of future applications and problem domains. While key aspects of the object-oriented paradigm provide a sound technical basis for achieving these aims, the need to balance extensibility and a high-level programming interface against the realities of efficiency and ease of implementation in a distributed setting meant that the task of synthesising a Standard from existing practice was non-trivial. Indeed, in order to meet the design aims of PREMO is was found necessary to augment the basic object infrastructure with facilities and ideas drawn from other programming paradigms, in particular concepts from constraint management and dataflow. This paper describes the important trade-offs that have affected the development of PREMO and explains how these are addressed through the use of specific programming paradigms.

Many engineers are still reluctant to adopt advanced object-oriented technologies (such as high modularity: dynamic binding, automatic garbage collection, etc.) for embedded systems with real-time constraints, because of their supposed inefficiency. We set ourselves into the context of building telecommunication systems with a standard object-oriented analysis and design approach. We describe how we use relevant design patterns, followed with an implementation in a pure object-oriented language (Eiffel) to conciliate the needed efficiency with the benefits of the object-oriented approach - flexibility dynamic configurability maintenability portability, etc. We discuss a case study. based on the implementation of SMDS (Switched Multi-megabits Data Service) servers featuring high-throughput and low-delay transmissions and respecting the real-time constraints of SMDS.

An object-oriented configuration design method for paper feeding mechanisms

As printing machines attain higher operating speeds, paper feeding mechanisms are more prone to problems such as vibration, noise, and paper jams. To design reliable paper feeding mechanisms, designers first use heuristic knowledge to decide the basic specifications of the printer according to the user's requirements. In the preliminary design stage, the design process is represented hierarchically and the characteristics of each part are determined. Conceptually, the process is analogous to the methodology used in configuration design. In this research, the design process has been analyzed systematically by the OMT (object Modeling Technique) method, which integrates the object, functional, and dynamic models. The physical parts of the paper feeding mechanism are represented as objects, and the design Knowledge and design constraints are represented by rules and methods. A commercial expert system shell, Nexpert object, is adapted for the implementation. The inferred results are converted to create the BOM (Bill of Materials) data and are saved in a database for the detailed design and production stage. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
