The nascent and rapidly evolving state of parallel systems often leaves parallel application developers at the mercy of inefficient, inflexible operating system software. Given the relatively primitive state of parallel systems software, maximizing the performance of parallel applications not only requires judicious tuning of the application software, but occasionally, the replacement of specific system software modules with others that can more readily respond to the imposed pattern of resource demands. To assess the feasibility of application and performance tuning via malleable system software and to understand the performance penalties for detailed operating system performance data capture, we describe a set of performance instrumentation techniques for parallel, object-oriented operating systems and a set of performance experiments with Choices, an experimental, object-oriented operating system designed for use with parallel systems. These performance experiments show that (a) the performance overhead for operating system data capture is modest, (b) the penalty for malleable, object-oriented operating systems is negligible, but (c) techniques are needed to strictly enforce adherence of implementation to design if operating system modules are to be replaced.

A parallel discrete-event simulation (DEVS) formalism which exploits the parallelism of transition collisions in the simulation of DEVS models is considered. We present a design for the abstract simulator needed to prove the formalism's soundness and to serve as a reference for implementation. The abstract simulator is composed of cooperating simulation engines, (simulators and coordinators) that use bag-like messages to synchronize the parallel activities that are distributed across autonomous asynchronous processors. The approach suggests engines that are efficient in both sequential and distributed/parallel environments. After describing the abstract simulator we briefly discuss a prototype implementation that affords a high degree of flexibility by mechanizing the "closure under coupling" property of the parallel DEVS formalism and the characteristics of object-oriented systems.< >

The Intelligent Manufacturing Research initiative at Louisiana State University has designed and implemented an object oriented control model for a simple manufacturing cell. Using object oriented programming and design has allowed the internal program structure (virtual cell space) to closely match the physical cell construction (physical cell space). This paper discusses the second phase of the cell implementation in which the existing C++ objects were implemented as autonomous units under operating system control. The operating system used is Microsoft Windows and Windows for Workgroups 3.1. Since each object is autonomous, they can assume the properties of self-monitoring agents in the system rather than simple request servers under the sole control of the calling object. Communication between objects is facilitated by the operating system using dynamic data exchange (DDE) calls or by compiling the module into dynamic link library (DLL) modules. This arrangement of system control architecture increases system autonomy, concurrency, and ease of use for a relatively small overhead penalty.< >

A problem commonly associated with the implementation of fuzzy algorithms in decision processes is the adjustment of the boundaries of the fuzzy sets. This problem becomes even more complex when no expert knowledge is available. In this case, the use of simulation tools in order to validate the model and to analyze estimation problems, is often unavoidable. The problem studied throughout this paper belongs to this "hard to define" type. It consists in estimating the real destination point (DP) of an object directed towards different possible destination points, using fuzzy logic as a fusion mechanism. Because of the complexity of adjusting the fuzzy parameters, different simulation tools were designed. The result is a simulation environment which can be used for development as well as for demonstration purposes. Special care was taken in the implementation of the different parts of that environment to get a software as modular as possible. This was obtained by using object oriented programming techniques for the general structures as well as for the graphics functions. The use of Microsoft Windows 3.1 as a graphic interface also implied different coding approaches.< >

Alarm processing is a traditional feature of energy management systems (EMS) and has not changed significantly over several generations of SCADA design. However recent applications of artificial intelligence have dramatically altered the methods of handling this information. This paper describes two parts of a project carried out at the University of Dundee for Scottish Hydro-Electric plc (HE) on the use of an artificial intelligence system for alarm processing and fault diagnosis. The first part of the project was an overview and comparison study of three real-time object-oriented toolkits: Muse, Kappa and Nexpert object. The study is based on the capabilities of such toolkits to handle the power system alarm processing integration with external programs and real-time databases, portability, price and execution speed. Some advantages and drawbacks of each toolkit are also pointed out. The second part of the project was the implementation of an object-oriented expert system using the KappaPC toolkit operating on a 486 IBM compatible PC under Microsoft Windows 3.1. The structure of the object-oriented expert system captures the heuristic knowledge used for power system operation. The knowledge-base is automatically updated by the existing SCADA system as the power system status changes. The paper also describes the features of the real-time object-oriented expert system which includes the need for fast deep-level reasoning, easy maintainability of the object-oriented programming and the end user's interface.< >

Traditionally, software is developed by using the waterfall model. It is also known as structured development. The decomposition in structured development is based on functions. The development phases, namely, analysis, design and implementation are sequential. Maintenance is not thought of until the software is delivered to the end user. It is a general scenario that by the time software is delivered the requirements have changed or the technology has advanced. The customer is in a fix; she cannot use it or throw it due to the investment made on it. This potential obsolescence and the need for immediate maintenance is called post-delivery syndrome. This report identifies the causes for post-delivery syndrome in the traditional method and then discusses how the impact of post-delivery syndrome is reduced in object-oriented development.< >

This paper describes practical design and implementation techniques used for creating Group Support systems (GSS) in networked PC environments. Examples of GSS based on the shared context model and implemented in Microsoft Windows are presented and experiences using 'C', 'C++', 'objectPascal' and 'Actor' languages included. Graphical user interfaces and multi-tasking extend traditional methods for supporting group work. The Network Based object provides support for all inter and intra processor communications between the GSS applications. Multiple levels of data service are provided to maintain shared data, coordinate "What You See Is What I See" views, and transmit cursor gestures in a convenient and efficient manner. The applications presented demonstrate the viability of implementing GSS on PCs. The unique properties of multi-tasking operating systems coupled with the object-oriented paradigm greatly facilitate Group Support System creation and use. An example application illustrating these concepts is included on the CD-ROM.

The number of design decisions for communication network hardware in message passing distributed memory systems is quite large, as illustrated by many different implemented and proposed designs. Many of the decisions are driven by, on one side, performance requirements of targeted applications for the parallel system, and on the other side, hardware implementation costs. To obtain cost effective communication hardware matching a certain application domain, use of a parallel architecture simulation framework is inevitable. The simulator presented here, named PARSE, offers a base for such a framework. It can accurately simulate a wide range of communication architectures and, unlike analytic communication models, does properly model all performance aspects. Changing parameters of simulated architectures is very flexible and the object oriented implementation of the simulator facilitates future extensions and enhancements.< >

Scientific applications often manipulate very large sets of persistent data. Over the past decade, advances in disk storage device performance have consistently been outpaced by advances in the performance of the rest of the computer system. As a result, many scientific applications have become I/O-bound, i.e. their run-times are dominated by the time spent performing I/O operations. Consequently, the performance of I/O operations has become critical for high performance in these applications. The ELFS approach is designed to address the issue of high performance I/O by treating files as typed objects. Typed file objects can exploit knowledge about the file structure and type of data. Typed file objects can selectively apply techniques such as prefetching, parallel asynchronous file access, and caching to improve performance. Also, by typing objects, the interface to the user can be improved in two ways. First, the interface can be made easier to use by presenting file operations in a more natural manner to the user. Second, the interface can allow the user to provide an “oracle” about access patterns, that can allow the file object to improve performance. By combining these concepts with the object-oriented paradigm, the goal of the ELFS methodology is to create flexible, extensible file classes that are easy to use while achieving high performance. In this paper we present the ELFS approach and our experiences with the design and implementation of two file classes: a two dimensional dense matrix file class and a multidimensional range searching file class.
