After an extensive evaluation, the Eiffel objectoriented language has been selected for the design and implementation of the run control portion of the CEBAF Data Acquisition System. The OSF/Motif graphical user interface toolkit and Data Views process control system have been incorporated into this frame-work. We discuss the evaluation process, the status of the implementation and the lessons learned, particularly in the use of objectoriented techniques.

This paper describes the implementation of a functional simulator for the interconnection of heterogeneous high-speed data networks. After trying several approaches, we use the object-oriented conception and language to permit the use of dynamic control of each protocol (FDDI, DQDB, ATM). We studied the most interesting QOS parameters for our context. For the administration aspect of a heterogeneous network, the simulator permits the evaluation of the evolution of the QOS for the interworking units.

Providing the financial engineering community with adequate software tools presents several challenges to application developers. Experience shows that reusability-oriented software development as supported by object technology has the potential to meet these challenges. To back the argument, a project of building a pilot implementation of a swap valuation system using a comprehensive class library including an application framework is reported. As a novelty the project emphasized the use of so-called design patterns. The project experience suggests that the use of design patterns significantly eases the application of a large class library and facilitates the reuse of design.

This paper was motivated by various lessons learned during the design and implementation of an expert scheduling system for HUYCK Canada Inc. This is predominantly a rule-based system implemented using OPS5 with FORTRAN interface routines. It is symbiotic in that the schedule generated by the system can be altered by the user to the effect that the consequences of the user's action, including the schedule feasibility, are immediately presented to the user. The software is being used daily by the company. To improve the system, techniques such as the use of the blackboard architecture and object-oriented modeling are currently being investigated. This paper provides an overview of the expert scheduling system along with the description of a recent scheduling system prototype which incorporates the concepts of black-board architecture. The paper concludes with an action note that it is planned to develop an object-oriented scheduling system using the blackboard architecture.
