A brief account of experiences in using an implementation of PCTE is given. Particular reference is paid to the PCTE OMS (object management system). A description of the circumstances which led to the use of a PCTE implementation is provided. The author looks at experiences with and opinions of the various aspects of the OMS, including comments on the ease of use, comparisons with corresponding facilities offered by other systems (especially Unix), relevance to user requirements, and the differences, if any, that might be expected in an implementation of PCTE+. A description of the use of the system as a whole, with particular reference to the improvements in the PCTE+ OMS, is also given.< >

An approach to power plant alarm filtering using alarm relationships is briefly discussed. The industrywide need for this capability is described and the development environment is presented. The use of this tool during the design process is explored and various design considerations are examined. A typical alarm design development is outlined and the integration of a human alarm filtering system (AFS) into this development cycle is introduced, considering elements such as human factors, alarm hierarchy, logic structure, and usefulness. The AFS is utilized to examine typical alarm patterns and alarm relationships for continuity and diversity. The concept of implied but hidden plant states is defined and developed. Integration of the AFS with a simulator or mockup is briefly discussed as a method of design verification prior to implementation.< >

This paper has presented a knowledge based system (KBS) architecture which provides a framework for the implementation of complex information processing tasks. Both rule based and algorithmic knowledge operate upon a hierarchy of symbolic, propositional, numerical and image information in the interpretation of sonar data. This has allowed the application of KBS technology to multi-dimensional signal processing as well as to higher levels of inference and reasoning within a single framework. Current work is investigating use of the cell within less ambitious domains, to focus more on the resolution of architectural design issues. Hardware implementations are also under consideration, using innovative devices such as the INMOS T414/T8000 transputer.
