The ultimate goal in any proposed Image Quality Metrics (IQMs) is to accurately predict the subjective quality scores given by observers. In the case of most IQMs the quality score is calculated by pooling the quality scores from what is referred to as a quality map of an image. While different pooling methods have been proposed, most such approaches use various types of a weighting average over the quality map to calculate the image quality score. One such approach is to use saliency maps as a weighting factor in our pooling process. Such an approach will result in giving a higher weight to the salient regions of the image. In this work we study if we can evaluate the quality of an image by only calculating the quality of the most salient region in the image. Such an approach could possibly reduce the computational time and power needed for image quality assessment. Results show that in most cases, depending on the saliency calculation method used, we can improve the accuracy of IQMs by simply calculating the quality of a region in the image which covers as low as 20% of the salient energy. © 2021, Society for Imaging Science and Technology

We interpret our surrounding based on the visual stimuli, and perceive objects and materials around us to have various attributes, like color, glossiness, and translucency. We analyze the three-dimensional world based on the two-dimensional images detected by our retina. The state-of-the-art works conclude that the human visual system has a poor ability to fully understand and invert the complex optical nature of light and matter interaction. Some authors rather propose that the human brain calculates image statistics to perceive appearance, demonstrating correlation between perceptual attributes and various statistical metrics. However, the illustrated examples are usually unrealistic nearly-perfect stimuli, making real-life robustness of the findings questionable. In this study, we analyzed image statistics of photos of real world objects, and assessed the performance of statistical image metrics proposedly used by the human visual system. To objectively evaluate the quality of videos different state-of-the-art Image Quality Metrics (IQMs) have been used to introduce different Video Quality Metrics (VQM). While such approaches are able to evaluate the spatial quality of the frames in the video they are not able to address the temporal aspects of the video quality. In this study, we introduce a new full-reference VQM which is based on taking advantage of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based IQM to evaluate the quality of the frame. Using other techniques such as visual saliency detection we are then able to differentiate between spatial and temporal distortions and use different pooling techniques to evaluate the quality of the video. Our results show that by detecting the type of distortion (spatial or temporal) affecting the video quality, the proposed VQM can evaluate the quality of the video with a higher accuracy. Color is one of the most prominent appearance attributes. The terms used by humans to communicate color appearance and to set categorical boundaries in the color space have long been a point of scholarly interest. Two conflicting theories of universal and culture-relative color naming have been addressed by numerous studies. While the characteristics of color naming have been studied in considerable number of languages, the quantity of basic color terms and the variation of color categories across the languages is still a matter of an ongoing debate. Color naming in English is widely explored and compared with numerous languages, including the languages of non-industrialized societies. Being the unrelated languages, we hypothesize that the basic color terms and the categorical boundaries vary between the English and Georgian languages. To test this hypothesis, we conducted experiments with native Georgian speakers and compared the results with the state-of-the-art in context of English. The results have revealed interesting differences as well as similarities that are worth exploring further. Copyright © 2020 for this paper by its authors. This work takes a step towards understanding fundamental aspects of appearance change in cultural heritage. Particularly, we concentrate on the case study of the Hedal Madonna - a polychrome wood sculpture dated to the mid-1200s, and an important object of ecclesiastical art and Norwegian heritage. It is covered with a layered coating that gives rise to complex reflective properties and gives the sculpture a unique appearance. We studied the goniometric, spectral, and chromatic properties of mock-ups manufactured according to medieval techniques, and also carried out accelerated aging. We compared the properties of aged and original mock-ups, and found non-trivial changes in polychrome appearance. While the color of the mock-ups did not change significantly, we observed a noticeable change in their glossiness, presumably caused by structural degradation of the surface. We also found a difference in the goniometric properties of the polychrome material's reflectance as a function of angle. Reflectance distributions that were originally symmetric with respect to angle became asymmetric. These findings will help to understand the original appearance of the Hedal Madonna, as well as aiding the design of appropriate conservation conditions for both the original statue and its recent reconstruction. © 2020, Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

The object sizes in images are diverse, therefore, capturing multiple scale context information is essential for semantic segmentation. Existing context aggregation methods such as pyramid pooling module (PPM) and atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) employ different pooling size or atrous rate, such that multiple scale information is captured. However, the pooling sizes and atrous rates are chosen empirically. Rethinking of ASPP leads to our observation that learnable sampling locations of the convolution operation can endow the network learnable field-of-view, thus the ability of capturing object context information adaptively. Following this observation, in this paper, we propose an adaptive context encoding (ACE) module based on deformable convolution operation where sampling locations of the convolution operation are learnable. Our ACE module can be embedded into other Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) easily for context aggregation. The effectiveness of the proposed module is demonstrated on Pascal-Context and ADE20K datasets. Although our proposed ACE only consists of three deformable convolution blocks, it outperforms PPM and ASPP in terms of mean Intersection of Union (mIoU) on both datasets. All the experimental studies confirm that our proposed module is effective compared to the state-of-the-art methods. © 2020, Society for Imaging Science and Technology

Over the years, there have been many studies conducted for whiteboard image detection, extraction and quality enhancements. However, the image quality attributes of the streaming whiteboard contents as well as users' expectations from such whiteboard scenes are not well investigated. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to examine the effects of the different whiteboard image features on the overall quality of the whiteboard images. Particularly, the naturalness and legibility quality attributes of the images were investigated through psychovisual experiments. Our experimental results show that increasing color attributes such as saturation, brightness and luminance contrast, lead to more legible whiteboard contents;which in turn increases the whiteboard image quality. Enhancement processes of the whiteboard backgrounds, however, show strong effects on the naturalness attribute. But, when the general image quality is considered, observers tend to prefer more legible whiteboard image contents rather than the naturalness of the appearance. © 2019, Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

We present a method to perform multi-illuminant white balance in uncontrolled scenes partially illuminated by a known flash or strobe. The outcome minimises the color cast associated to the difference between the illuminants. It is based on two captures taken consecutively, one in the original conditions and another including the artificial illumination;a flash/no-flash image pair, in which all the capturing settings are kept the same in both cases. The images obtained are used to create a spatial map of the flash contribution that allows for a spatially dependent color correction in the flash capture. © 2018 IEEE.
