The main contribution of the article is the presentation of enhancements to the IEEE hardware/software system life cycle model in the development of reactive, real time embedded systems. In addition, the enhanced life cycle model incorporates a collection of adaptive fuzzy clocks, one for each stage of the life cycle to monitor expected and actual durations. The model also monitors degrees of Cempel energy dissipation. Features of the Wolfe life cycle model (communicating processes, structural and logical descriptions of system processes) are also included in the enhanced IEEE model.

This paper proposes a parallel implementation of the genetic algorithm (GA) on the Internet which will improve the algorithm's performance. It is motivated by the possibility of aiding research into complex search and optimization problems that use the GA. Requirements and constraints regarding parallelization of the GA are identified. A parallel GA is developed for an ideal PRAM architecture and is shown to have an asymptotic running time of O(log n), an improvement over the sequential GA. A parallel GA is also designed for a Unix network and has an asymptotic running time comparable to the ideal system. The algorithm is a decentralized, asynchronous, and fault-tolerant design that matches the characteristics of the network. The GA population is divided into colonies that are distributed among processors. Trade policies are executed for the exchange of genes.

Increasing global concerns regarding environmental, political and future energy problems have created considerable awareness of the need to develop nonconventional electrical energy sources. It is expected that nonutility generation (NUG) and cogeneration will increase their market share of the total energy mix as a result of the energy policies being adopted by many governments and power utilities around the world. The reliability and economic implications of these capacity additions can be quite significant. This paper illustrates the impacts of NUG facilities on system adequacy and reliability worth in both generation system and composite generation and transmission system assessment.

NAVL (Newtonian Architecture for Virtual Landscapes) is a distributed virtual reality system designed with the goal of achieving a high degree of network efficiency; in particular, by using a hierarchical network architecture that is more efficient than traditional peer-to-peer or client-server architectures, and simulating the virtual world on the local hosts using a Newtonian based model, thereby functioning as a high order dead reckoning protocol. This paper presents the general overview of the NAVL VR system along with details of the proposed implementation.

Traditional induction motor models are either 60-Hz models for steady-state operation or dq0 models for transient analysis. This paper presents a general induction-motor model based directly on phase coordinates. Stator and rotor windings are seen as coupled coils, much like a transformer. For transient analysis, this model is basically the same (apart from the mechanical equations) as the standard model for coupled inductances in the EMTP. In addition to the general model equations, the paper presents the data conversion procedure to obtain the model parameters from standard manufacturers data. Simulation results show the validity of the model as compared to a standard (dq0) EMTP induction motor model.

This paper presents a technique for studying the adequacy performance of a small area (area of interest) in a power network in which the remaining network is modeled as an adequacy equivalent. This approach can be very useful for adequacy evaluation of a large practical power system, as it is sometimes necessary to perform detailed adequacy analysis of selected relatively small regions in the network. It is particularly useful when sensitivity analysis is to be conducted in the area of interest or in conducting adequacy studies of interconnected areas where one area can be replaced by an equivalent, thus reducing the size of the overall system.

Reliability analysis is not usually conducted on a complete power system, and reliability evaluations of generating facilities, transmission systems, and of distribution system segments are usually conducted independently. The reliability indices obtained for each segment are then used to make decisions. A more realistic procedure involves categorizing the generating, transmission and distribution zones into hierarchical levels and performing reliability analysis of these levels. The authors illustrate the reliability indices which can be obtained at these hierarchical levels. The analysis considers element outages in all parts of an electric power system to provide a comprehensive appraisal of the overall system. The concepts involved in the reliability evaluation of a complete power network are presented using an educational test system developed at the University of Saskatchewan.< >

An open systems environment for security assessment is described. Multiple contingency cases of power systems are preprocessed by qualitative analysis techniques of artificial intelligence to get the independent double contingency emergency set. The double contingency cases can be assessed in parallel on open workstation systems of different vendors with multiple operating systems. Tests on an example system showed that the proposed methods have satisfactory speed with a convenient and reliable environment.< >

The authors describe the evaluation of the worth or value of distribution system reliability using quantitative reliability analysis and customer interruption costs. The ability to assess reliability worth makes it possible to optimize the reliability of a system by comparing the reliability worth with the associated system investment costs. The analyses include an evaluation of the reliability of different design/operating configurations of a distribution system and the corresponding reliability worths at the customer level. The reliability of each system configuration is evaluated in terms of the system performance indices and the expected customer outage costs due to power interruptions.< >

Local area networks (LANs) have flourished in applications that require a relatively high-speed, packet oriented data transfer mechanism.
