social computing education is gaining traction across computer science and information science disciplines, yet lacks a standardized pedagogical framework for topics to teach, as well as strategies for engaging students. This workshop aims to convene experts in CSCW to develop a cohesive framework for undergraduate and graduate social computing courses. Emphasizing ethical and cultural considerations, the workshop will explore core topics spanning sociological, psychological, technical, and design aspects of social computing. Through interactive sessions, attendees will collaboratively shape a curricular framework that is responsive to diverse country contexts and ethical imperatives. At the conclusion of the workshop, we anticipate we will publish a framework for topics and pedagogical approaches to social computing, as well as a repository of existing courses.. © 2024 Owner/Author.

According to recent research, the hybrid workspace should be recognized as a distinct "third space'' alongside the fully physical and fully remote workspace. However, the specific attributes of this third space remain uncertain. Following a research-through-design approach, this study seeks to explore the unique qualities of the hybrid cooperative space with a co-creative poster, that encourages a collaborative and speculative generation of such qualities. Based on the findings gathered at a research and art event, this study identifies three concrete affordances and qualities of the hybrid workspace and demonstrates the potential of looking beyond binary classification systems when designing for the hybrid cooperative space. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Within computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), efforts to digitalize work contribute to continual economic growth by, e.g., enhancing work productivity and mediating workflows of capitalist firms to accumulate more and evermore capital at the expense of the marginalization of workers who are pushed to the margins, rendering their work poorly compensated and undervaluing essential care and reproductive work. Extending the growing call to move beyond growth politics and toward post-growth, this panel brings researchers, designers, and practitioners together to engage in a critical dialogue on how CSCW and HCI principles can be adjusted and harnessed to cultivate futures to enhance human and ecological wellbeing rather than perpetuating unsustainable growth, where work does not fuel endless consumption but meet human needs and nurture sustainable livelihoods. This panel aims to nurture the Post-growth HCI Collective to work together, in solidarity, to resist the commodification and drive for infinite capital accumulation in/through digital technologies for the betterment of CSCW, HCI, and the broader computing community. © 2024 Owner/Author.

The rapid advancements in generative AI have spurred the development of AI chatbots for emotional support. In this work, we designed ArtTheraCat, a novel multimodal chatbot that promotes mental health by integrating supportive dialogue with artistic image generation. Utilizing images as an auxiliary medium, ArtTheraCat guides users through a process of emotion externalization in multi-turn dialogues, which can facilitates self-awareness, reflection, and positive emotional encouragement. Results from a user study involving 21 participants indicate a significant improvement in their emotional state post-interaction with ArtTheraCat, especially in reducing negative affects. Qualitative analysis highlighted the role of generated images as a non-verbal medium in emotional release and self-insight. The findings of this paper provide practical guidance for the design of multimodal mental health chatbots. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Sensemaking, the process of deriving meaning from data, is complex due to its non-linear and open-ended nature. Communicating decision-making during such tasks is difficult, especially when relying on human memory. Provenance information tracks task events and can support accurate communication of user interactions, evaluation approaches, areas of interest, and possible biases. In sensemaking communication, textual reports are common but lack tools that effectively capture interactions, summarize processes, and notify relevant parties. Consequently, informal information sharing prevails, leading to inefficient information exchange and a need for automation to improve it. This thesis evaluates the impact of automatically captured provenance information on effective handoff communication in sensemaking scenarios through expert interviews, artifact reviews, and experiments. It explores the potential of automatic reporting systems and human reactions to provenance summarization techniques. © 2024 Owner/Author.
