Networked manufacturing oriented cooperative CAPP system has become one of the hotspots of research and application. The paper mainly studies how to realize cooperative planning among heterogeneous CAPP systems in a networked manufacturing oriented environment. We put forward an idea for cooperative process planning. Then, we study some key technologies of it, including cooperative control command management technology and shared data processing. Finally an example of the networked manufacturing oriented cooperative CAPP system is introduced.

Geological systems can be represented as unstructured tetrahedral grids where faults are topological discontinuities in the volume and each fault block is a connected component. These grids are built from interpretations of seismic and borehole data. Obtaining additional data or new interpretations can point out errors in the tetrahedralised volume. When the location of a fault is slightly off, a new tetrahedralised volume has to be created from scratch. Directly editing the volume would be more effective and comfortable. A free-form deformation technique was developed to implement this interaction. The deformation is confined to a zone around the fault to be edited. Volume deformation is achieved by dragging control points; the geometry of the volume in the vicinity of the discontinuity is updated in realtime. A constraint maintains model consistency throughout editing by preventing tetrahedrons from flipping over. A smoothness constraint distributes the displacement in the whole active region.

One of the problems in building collaborative and intelligent design systems is the difficulty in integrating computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) with knowledge to generate results to the satisfaction of designers who often have high demands on aesthetics. In order to assist designers in the early stages of a product development this paper develops an intelligent methodology for integrating user knowledge and design knowledge. Taken the mobile phone form design as an example, a prototype intelligent conceptual design system is implemented, which consists essentially of the knowledge agents, each of which is a knowledge system with the capabilities of problem reasoning and learning. With this system, product designer and user can carry out simultaneously and intelligently in an Internet-based computer-aided product concurrent design system.

An efficient voxel representation scheme coupled with algorithms for voxelisation, display and thickness analysis of complex free form shapes is presented. The binary voxel model is stored as a stack of layers represented as bit-arrays. Polygonal solid models are converted into voxel format with a maximum resolution of 1000 (one billion voxels) in less than 2 minutes. Near real-time visualization of the voxel model is achieved by direct point rendering using a look-up table based on a finite set of neighbour voxel configurations. Thickness analysis is performed in terms of cross-sectional visualisation, progressive skin removal and radiography with minimum, maximum and total thickness along an orthographic direction. Testing of the algorithms for intricate shapes like Ganesha idol, pelvis bone and automobile cylinder gave satisfactory results. The voxel framework can be coupled to traditional CAD/CAM systems, providing additional capabilities to product engineers.

This paper presents a distributed application for collaborative design that aims to create a hybrid architecture combining a peer-to-peer model with server-centralised structure for efficient interoperation between the integrated heterogeneous applications and their convenient administration. In this research, the CORBA (common object request broker architecture) is utilised as an implementation tool, the XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is used as a common data descriptive language and the DXF (Data Exchange File) is chosen for the graphical file format. In this paper, the architecture is introduced first, and then the encapsulating issues is presented for existing applications and management services, followed by an example of gear design to illustrate the methods and procedure developed by this research.

In the paper, we are devoted to resolve the problem of resource organizing in manufacturing grid. A manufacturing grid (MG) architecture is first introduced which adopts the thoughts of peer-to-peer system and Web service. Then the issue to organize the resource in the manufacturing grid is mainly introduced. To describe the method of resource organizing, we introduce processes of resource publishing, resource searching and resource transfer or duplication when the hub joins in or exits from the grid are introduces seriatim. A distributed hashing algorithm is also presented. Then a prototype system of manufacturing grid is built to validate the way to organize resources.

In order to enhance the flexibility of the workflow management, many researchers put their focus on the flexible workflow management system. After discussing the features of flexible workflow, we propose a method to specify the flexible workflow by temporal logic based workflow specification model. Using this model, we have designed a flexible workflow management system. The flexibility for both selection and adaptation is supported well in this system. This paper describes how the flexibility is supported in the flexible workflow management system. A prototype system has been developed based on our model.

Multi-agent systems have been recognized as a promising solution for developing collaborative design and manufacturing systems. Resource sharing is one of the key issues that need to be addressed effectively in these systems. Effective resources utilization usually requires solving the synchronization interdependency problem among the agents. This paper addresses the synchronization interdependency problem and provides an effective solution for resource sharing at runtime. Also, it describes a proof-of-concept prototype implementation of the synchronization device using coordinated, intelligent rational agent model and the JADE platform.

This paper proposes a new approach to converting irregular genus-0 meshes into those with subdivision connectivity. The original mesh is parameterized onto the unit sphere firstly. Then a spherical base mesh is constructed with only four vertices. After that, a 1-to-4 subdivision operation and an iterative vertex relocation operation are applied alternately over the base mesh to produce a spherical subdivision mesh, which has similar vertex distribution as the spherical parameterized one. Finally, the remesh with subdivision connectivity is obtained by sampling the original surface. The experimental results show that our method can not only make the number of irregular vertices in the remesh as small as possible (only four), but also preserve the details of original model well.

In this paper, a simple, accurate and efficient method is presented for free-form surface blending with curvature continuity. The method is based on an approximate analytical solution to a sixth order partial differential equation (PDE) subjected to blending boundary constraints. The most accurate and fast solution to a PDE is the closed form solution, which however is either very difficult to come by or does not exist. Comparison studies show that our proposed method has similar accuracy and computational efficiency to those of the closed form solution. We also examine the effects of the vector-valued parameters on the shape of blending surfaces and apply our proposed method in various surface blending examples. The outcomes indicate that the proposed approach is able to solve not only simple surface blending problems, but also complex ones which otherwise could only be solved using expensive numerical methods. In addition, this method can be extended to satisfy up to curvature continuities along 3 or 4 boundaries of a 3- or 4-sided patch and serve as an effective tool for the generation and manipulation of complex surfaces.
