An efficient method for simulating cartoon style rain in 3D environment is proposed here. By taking advantage of the parallelism and programmability of GPUs (Graphic Processing Units), real-time interaction can be achieved Splashing of raindrop is simulated using collision detection, series of stylized textures and rotations of point sprites. To simulate wind-driven raining effect, the motion of particles can be freely controlled based on Newtonian dynamics. We can also control the size of raindrops dynamically by using different textures or changing the size of point sprites. Many experiments have been done in 3D scenes with different complexity and GPU-based stylized rendering. The experimental results demonstrated the efficiency of our method for real-time rain simulation in cartoon style with complex geometries of 3D scenes. © 2005.IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a feature-preserving mesh denoising algorithm which is effective, simple and easy to implement. The proposed method is a two-stage procedure with a bilateral surface normal filtering followed by integration of the normals for least squares error (LSE) vertex position updates. It is well-known that normal variations offer more intuitive geometric meaning than vertex position variations. A smooth surface can be described as one having smoothly varying normals whereas features such as edges and corners appear as discontinuities in the normals. Thus we cast feature-preserving mesh denoising as a robust surface normal estimation using bilateral filtering. Our definition of "intensity difference" used in the influence weighting function of the bilateral filter robustly prevents features such as sharp edges and corners from being washed out. We will demonstrate this capability by comparing the results from smoothing CAD-like models with other smoothing algorithms. © 2005.IEEE.

This paper presents a novel approach for constructing a piecewise triangular cubic polynomial surface with C1 continuity around a common corner vertex. A C1 continuity condition between two cubic triangular patches is first derived using mixed directional derivatives. An approach for constructing a surface with C1 continuity around a corner is then developed. Our approach is easy and fast with the virtue of cubic reproduction, local shape controllability, C1 continuous at the corner vertex. Some experimental results are presented to show the applicability and flexibility of the approach. © 2005.IEEE.

A new method to obtain explicit re-parameterization using piecewise rational linear functions is presented in this paper. Based on the outstanding performance of Mobius transformation on modifying pieces with monotonic parametric speed, we create a partition of the original curve, in which the parametric speed of each segment is of monotonic variation. The values of new parameters corresponding to the subdivision points are specified a priori as the ratio of its cumulative arc length and its total arc length. C1 continuity conditions are imposed to each segment, thus, with respect to the new parameters, the objective function is linear and admits a closed-form optimization. Analysis of examples shows that, our method brings a curve very close to the arc length parameterization under L2 norm but with fewer segments. © 2005.IEEE.

The study of the microstructure in cancellous bone is important in osteoporosis research. In this paper, we focus in the extraction of rod-like trabeculae in cancellous hone, whose topological and geometrical properties are known to be strongly related to bone strength. Three dimensional (3D) cancellous bone volume data obtained from micro Computed Tomography (micro-CT) scans is used in our analysis. Because of the complexity of the cancellous bone microstructure, the mere use of existing 3D digital topology method's is unable to yield satisfactory results for trabeculae extraction. We devise several enhancements which are specific to the identification of rod-like trabeculae. Experimental results show that the accuracy of trabeculae extraction is greatly improved. This application study may help clinicians to solve problems in future. © 2005.IEEE.

Current inverse global illumination techniques focus on the investigation of opaque objects. In this paper, we present a new method for recovering material properties of crystal-like objects. First of all, the objects in the image are separated into two classes: the opaque objects and the translucent objects. For the translucent objects, by analyzing refractive phenomena, we propose a method to recover an approximation of the refractive index and transmission coefficients. First, obtain the refractive index with the minimum error of color variance by a certain step calculations and then iteratively recover the color parameters. Experiments show that our algorithms can be completed in few iterative steps, and recovery error is very small. With the recovered material properties, the scene can be rendered under novel lighting or viewing conditions, and it can also be rendered when new objects are added into the scene. © 2005.IEEE.

The proliferation of computer devices and wireless networks allows users to access information and collaborative edit documents with others from anywhere and at anytime. Mobile network and device capabilities constrain the application implementation, which implies that the storage space and computing power is limited and network is unreliable. This paper presents a collaborative graphics editing system that can work well in mobile environment. To maintain the consistency of the replicas that dispersed on mobile sites, a semi-replicated architecture is proposed and the corresponding consistency schema is also presented The schema is realized in MCES - a prototype system of collaborative graphics editing system that can work well in mobile environment.

In computer aided geometric design and computer graphics, fitting point clouds with smooth curves (known as curve reconstruction) is a widely investigated problem. Dynamic implicit curve reconstruction is a new approach appearing in the curve reconstruction. In the paper, we introduce algebraic triangular B-splines into the dynamic implicit curve reconstruction, such that the results of the curves are zero sets of some B-spline functions over triangular meshes. We also use reduced gradient distances to measure the error between the curves and the point clouds. The results illustrate that the method can deal with complex topologies.

This paper introduces a new type of CNC (computer Numerical Control), which is named as INC. INC (Integrated Numerical Control or Intelligent Numerical Control) is conceived and designed to facilitate the work of a group, which includes computer-aided designers, computer-aided process planners, computer-aided manufacturers and NC workers. INC provides them a uniflledpla form oriented to CNC manufacturing, which make their work turned from distributed work to collaborative work. In this paper, we describe the philosophy and constituent elements of INC, and analyze construction, organization & implementation of INC systematically. We also discuss the key technologies and CSCW (computer Supported Collaborative Work) approaches using in INC, and a case is given to illustrate how INC works.
