The system is based on the globally shared product model conforming to VRML Standard The system takes sugarcane harvester design analysis and evaluation as an example, and utilizes fizzy evaluation principle to evaluate the design and analysis results for decisions making. The platform provides a collaborative intelligent environment for the design of products, aiming at integrating people, process and data in the virtual product development. In this paper, we illustrate PDM framework layer, a configuration model layer, a functional model layer, a fuzzy reasoning layer, an integration layer for I-DEAS and CIDS, Service-Oriented Conception design (SOCD) Model layer, design evaluation layer, a computer methods layer and a personal Web Graphical User Interface (GUI) and so on.

For decades, computer graphics has played an important role in many kinds of design works, especially, industrial design of solid objects. However, most available methods can not work well for soft and deformable object like cloth. The quality of works mostly depends on the efficiency of hardware as same as the cloth and garment pattern modeling methods. In this research, real time cloth modeling for costume design and making is proposed using mass-spring model and cellular structure space model. For representing realistic cloth, mass-spring model is parameterized under Newton laws, while cellular structured space model is defined for keeping the structure of each garment pattern. Then, the pattern is scaled to fit the input user's body size and clothed on user's virtual body. Furthermore, this pattern can be printed out as a set of ready-to-cut patterns. Proposed 3D modeling for costume design can reduce material cost and computational time for pattern making, and also enable dress remaking and refitting process in real time. In this paper we present a novel method of hybrid-scheme for texture synthesis. By the scheme, we capture the feature of textures in two levels. At the macro-structure level, we first generate a texton mask on the pattern from the original source texture, employed in the synthesis as a primary guidance for the patch-based sampling. And in the micro-structure level, we perform blending using a pixel-based synthesis method based on the grey-level texton mask within the boundary zones of the patches. As a result, our method may not only quickly capture the macro-structure of the source texture, with little overhead from simple interactive operation,, and at the same time, the micro-structure may be also nicely preserved in the synthesis by a pixel-based blending procedure. Experiments show that our solution in combining patch-based sampling and pixel-based sampling method based on texton masks is highly efficient for synthesizing large amount of textures with comprehensive structures.

The discussion of this paper focuses on how boundary based smooth shape design can be carried out. For this we treat surface generation as a mathematical boundary-value problem. In particular, we utilize elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) of arbitrary order. Using the methodology outlined here, a designer can therefore generate the geometry of shapes satisfying an arbitrary set of boundary conditions. The boundary conditions for the chosen PDE can be specified as curves in 3-space defining the profile geometry of the shape. We show how a compact analytic solution for the chosen arbitrary order PDE can be formulated enabling complex shapes to be designed and manipulated in real time. This solution scheme, although analytic, satisfies exactly, even in the case of general boundary conditions, where the resulting surface has a closed form representation allowing real time shape manipulation. In order to enable users to appreciate the powerful shape design and manipulation capability of the method, we present a set of practical examples.

designers have been creating three-dimensional (3D) objects with computer-aided design (CAD) applications for approximately 25 years, creating a huge library of data with a vast potential for reuse. One estimate suggests for that every 3D CAD user in design, engineering, or manufacturing, there are 30 potential users of the data in marketing, product documentation, sales, support, customer service, and beyond. Through the 3D Industry Forum (3DIF), Intel is working with other companies to develop a standard file format and sample runtime libraries designed to support the efficient reuse of 3D data in such mainstream applications. The Universal 3D (U3D) specification and sample implementation will simplify the transformation of complex 3D data into a format that can be streamed, compressed and viewed on affordable, nonproprietary software/hardware platforms while providing a high quality viewing experience. By removing the voluminous detail needed by manufacturing and retaining the integrity of the original data model, U3D will enable efficient distribution of 3D data over the Internet and applications requiring lightweight 3D data. The first version of U3D, as well as the sample software, was released in December, 2004.

It is considered that the practice of Preliminary Ship design has not seen a commensurate change to that seen in the latter stages of design due to the introduction of Integrated Product Models. The range of research and design studies undertaken recently by the UCL design Research Centre (DRC), show the comprehensive nature of its work using advances in computer graphics integrated with conventional numerical synthesis techniques at the earliest stages of ship design work. This has latterly included a focus on simulation in preliminary design studies. The simulation work that has already been undertaken by the UCL DRC, beyond the introductory presentation made to ICCAS 2005. is outlined. From this ongoing work certain insights, relevant to future use of graphically based preliminary ship design, are discussed as they address both the issue of the level of design description and the procedural issues associated with the design process. The paper concludes with a consideration as to where the integration of a graphically based design description with simulation developments, such as the moves to a "Virtual Ship" approach], might lead future ship design practice. Allied to this is the question as to whether the introduction of interactive computer graphics into preliminary ship design can be considered to constitute a genuine paradigm shift in the design of physically large complex products, exemplified by a wide range of sophisticated examples of ship design practice.

Demonstrations play a major role in education process. Although many specimens are readily available, particularly in medicine and biology, demonstrations are commonly performed by showing these static specimens to medical or biological students. Interactive demonstrations can significantly impacts learning. An interactive system for visualizing 3D human organ models can fulfil this need. In this paper, we present techniques to realize such a system which can let the user select and view one or several major organ models extracted from segmented visible human dataset interactively through a simple graphical user interface. The stereoscopic views of these organ models are also achieved with this system running on a PC-based stereo-ready system. In our system, the marching cubes algorithm is used but new implementation we proposed to greatly improve both the speed and quality of surface rendering results is performed. This new implementation can generate the marching cubes cases on-the-fly within the surface extraction process of the models by considering the relationship of the vertices, borders, and surfaces of each voxel. We also describe a new method for specifying the normals for the extracted triangles without the need of physical information (such as intensity values stored in a medical computed tomography (CT) dataset) stored in the voxels. These normals will be used for lighting the extracted models later. Furthermore, a memory arrangement scheme is designed to enhance the usability of the system.

This paper presents a new MR (mixed reality) system for virtually modifying (e.g., denting, engraving, swelling) shape of real objects by using projection of computer-generated shade. Users of this system (named Hyperreal) recognize as if the real object was actually deformed when they operate the system to modify the shape of the object while only the shade pattern of the real object is changed. The authors are aiming to apply this technology to product designing field: designers would be able to evaluate and modify form of their product more efficiently and effectively by using Hyperreal than conventional design process (typically, CAD (computer aided design) systems and solid mock-ups) since the system is able to give actuality of real mock-up and still gives flexibility of shape data on a computer system (such as CAD system).

In the traditional paradigm for computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, tool paths are programmed offline from the CNC machine using the computer-aided design (CAD) model of the workpiece. The program is downloaded to the CNC controller and the part is then machined. Since a CAD model does not exist inside the CNC controller, it is unaware of the part to be machined and cannot predict or prevent errors. Not only is this paradigm labor intensive, it can lead to catastrophic damage if there are errors during machining. This paper presents a new concept for CNC machine control whereby a CAD model of the workpiece exists inside the controller and the tool positions are generated in real-time by the controller using the computer's graphics hardware without human intervention. The new concept was implemented on an experimental lathe machine specifically designed to machine complicated ornamental wood workpieces with a personal computer. An example workpiece was machined and measured using a 3D camera. The measured data was registered to the CAD model to evaluate machining accuracy.
