SYNTHESIS OF A NONRECURRENT ASSOCIATIVE MEMORY MODEL-BASED ON A nonlinear TRANSFORMATION IN THE SPECTRAL-DOMAIN

A new nonrecurrent associative memory model is proposed. This model is composed of a nonlinear transformation in the spectral domain followed by the association. The Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse is employed to obtain the least squares optimal solution. computer simulations are done to evaluate the performance of the model. The simulations use one-dimensional speech signals and two-dimensional head/shoulder images. Comparison of the proposed model with the classical optimal linear associative memory and an optimal nonlinear associative memory is presented.

OPTICALLY PROGRAMMED NEURAL-NETWORK CAPABLE OF STAND-ALONE OPERATION

A two-dimensional amorphous silicon photoconductor array and a liquid-crystal display form the core components of hardware system for the implementation of a multilayer perceptron neural network. All connections between layers, as well as the nonlinear transfer characteristics associated with the hidden- and output-layer neurons, are implemented in analog circuitry so that the network, once trained, behaves as a stand-alone processor. Subject to a standard backpropagation training algorithm, the network is shown to train very successfully. Training of the network is studied under different levels of weight quantization, neuron output resolution, and random weight-defect probability. A computer simulation of the hardware network is also performed, and excellent agreement is shown between the results of the hardware network and those of the computer simulation. It is concluded that the training capability of the present hardware network is very little degraded by its nonidealities, including the level of weight quantization and limit in neuron output resolution.

MASSIVELY PARALLEL ITERATIVE DETERMINATION OF STRATIFIED DIELECTRIC PARAMETERS FROM SCATTERED-FIELD MEASUREMENTS

The remote determination of dielectric constants of stratified dielectrics, through solution of the inverse-scattering problem, has practical application in many fields. We use a simple one-dimensional model to determine the salient characteristics of stratified layers of dielectrics given a finite number of reflection coefficients for various frequencies in the microwave X-band region. One of the key concepts of this research is the optimization that is necessary to find a global minimum of the highly nonlinear function that specifies the scattering coefficients. This was achieved by use of a simple iterative method whereby 16,384 iterative procedures that employ random starts are run simultaneously on a MasPar, which is a 16,000 processor single-instruction/multiple-data computer. Results show that one can solve for the refractive index or thickness of a number of dielectric layers with thicknesses of the order of one third of a wavelength or less by using this type of nonlinear optimization.

We propose an optimization based algorithm for designing phase-shifting masks. Our approach is an extension of our previous work [1]-[3] in the sense that the intensity image is optimized at a number of optical planes rather than just the focus plane. In addition, our algorithm can be used to design masks with shifted focus plane and/or extended depth of focus. We also propose the concept of ''dual mask'' and show its consequences to practical phase-shifting mask design. Finally we show examples of our proposed design techniques for single line phase connectors, cross phase connectors, contact holes and bright lines. simulation and experimental results verify the capability of our design technique to extend depth of focus and shift the focus plane.

We present a novel numerical method to solve Fokker-Planck equations in quantum optics, based on a Monte Carlo simulation of the probability diffusion process. The method is especially useful for multimode analysis, and hence for studying realistic models of nonlinear optical systems. Two simple examples are given: the first is a one-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation in the number representation, which describes a simple model of optical amplifier;the second is a two-dimensional equation in the P-function representation-the quasi-probability for normal-ordered averages-which corresponds to the customary Van der Pol model of the laser threshold. In this case also the field correlation function and spectrum are numerically simulated. © 1994 SPIE. All rights reserved.

114 GBIT/S SOLITON TRAIN GENERATION THROUGH RAMAN SELF-SCATTERING OF A DUAL-FREQUENCY BEAT SIGNAL IN DISPERSION DECREASING OPTICAL-FIBER

We report the generation of 114 Gbit/s trains of 250 fs fundamental solitons. The pulses are generated due to the conversion of an intense optical beat signal (generated from two DFB laser diodes and an erbium doped fiber amplifier combination) into a soliton train due to nonlinear propagation in a 1.6 km fiber of steadily decreasing dispersion. The train repetition rate corresponds to the beat frequency of the input signal and was readily tunable between 80 and 120 GHz. The results of a computer simulation of the system are found to be in good qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.

EFFECTS OF FINITE STYLUS WIDTH IN SURFACE-CONTACT PROFILOMETRY

A study of the effects of stylus width in the profilometry of a randomly rough surface is presented. An approximate solution for the path of a flat-tipped stylus on an arbitrary surface is expressed as a nonlinear function of the local surface height and its first two derivatives. This solution is then averaged to find the first two moments of the measured profile when the surface and its derivatives are jointly Gaussian variates. The measured surface variance is found to decrease with increasing stylus size in a manner consistent with computer simulations.
