CASE tools offer the opportunity of communication between the implementor and user and can help reduce the frequency of errors that occur in the early stages of systems development. Sophisticated on board electronics complicate the automotive design and development process and affects vehicle time to market. Technical risks impacts the design cycle including the exchange of information among design teams, design complexity and the effective use of methods and tools. Market risk factors like design ambiguities, changes in the functional requirements and competing product announcements affects this design approach. The project described in this paper is for a controller for a diesel engine which lowers fuel consumption and provides emissions control of air pollutants.

The Virtual Prototype program used by automotive electronics designers to simulate designs using new components. It is based on partnerships between Analogy Inc and several semiconductor vendors. It provides designers with simulation models even before the component design is finalised. The enabling technology behind the Prototype program is the MAST analogue hardware description language. This language provides both component and systems designers a common tool for simulating analogue and digital electronic parts as well as mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and other systems in their native units.

This paper presents a technique to solve a dynamic thermal analysis problem. The use of SPICE, a low level circuit simulator in conjunction with System Modelling Blocks and the MacroModelling techniques to predict the behaviour of an ignition coil circuit suffering from device self-heating. Designs are schematically captured while the complexity of analog devices are encapsulated in Macro Models. This simple graphical technique can describe the circuits behaviour as compared with other failure analysis techniques.

The analysis of electronic systems entails the use of sophisticated mathematical techniques. computer simulation is an attractive idea, in that it allows engineers to analyze their designs faster. In the field of automotive electronics, a variety of technology is encountered. This covers digital and analogue electronics and extends through to electromechanical devices for input and output. The whole system can become sufficiently complex that the simulation of such a system can itself be a time consuming process. An important influencing factor on simulation efficiency is the choice of model. It is popularly thought that a given device has a 'good' or a 'bad' model. In fact, the same device or system can be modelled to varying degrees of accuracy (or in greater or lesser detail). An understanding of how to choose the appropriate level of model is essential to the successful use of simulation.
