This field deals with identification of nominal models, estimation of uncertainty models, and validation of uncertainty models for the purpose of robust control design. The idea of worst case identification is to obtain approximations to an unknown system from a set of noisy data either transfer function measurements or input/output measurements. The paper discusses choices of inputs for a robust, convergent algorithm, the disadvantage of least squares fits in that worst case errors will be as bad as a convergence rate achieved with stable inputs.

System identification complements not only the robustness requirement of maintaining control in the face of plant uncertainty but thrives on the symbiotic relationship with it. This relationship exists as an iterative process of identification and control design while the identification requirement derives it specification from the closed loop performance with the previous controller and delivers an error bound that dictates the design of the successive controller. This paper applies and extends techniques in the emerging field of HINF identification to the problem of identifying a real plant as well as estimating the called a priori information necessary to determine worst case error bounds.

With the growing interest in the use of system identification as a means to build models for control design, the paper presents methods for robust model based control design in order to reach the goal of high performance plant control. The traditional identification method delivers a model in the form of a linear time invariant finite dimensional system also called nominal model and not all controllers suited for the nominal model will perform well with the plant. The main principle tackled in this report is that robustness must be traded off versus nominal performance.

The colloquium contains six individual papers on advances in adaptive control. They provide an introduction to a rapidly developing branch of adaptive control: continuous-time self-tuning control based on the notion of an emulator;the methods are discussed for a long-range predictive control with the help of self-tuning regulators. The basic least squares scheme is outlined for the parametric identification algorithm used in adaptive or self-tuning controllers;an LQG self-tuning control law is presented which includes a feedforward controller for the optimal rejection of measurable load disturbances. The problems are outlined and algorithms are presented associated with long-term operation, variable and uncertain time delay, value saturation, sudden changes in the process dynamics, and with frequent and strong load changes.
