This book contains an edited versIOn of lectures presented at the nato advanced study institute on virtual nonlinear MUL TIBODY systems which was held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 23 June to 3 July 2002. It was organized by the Department of Mechanics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, in cooperation with the institute B of Mechanics, University of Stuttgart, Germany. The advanced study institute addressed the state of the art in multibody dynamics placing special emphasis on nonlinear systems, virtual reality, and control design as required in mechatronics and its corresponding applications. Eighty-six participants from twenty-two countries representing academia, industry, government and research institutions attended the meeting. The high qualification of the participants contributed greatly to the success of the advanced study institute in that it promoted the exchange of experience between leading scientists and young scholars, and encouraged discussions to generate new ideas and to define directions of research and future developments. The full program of the advanced study institute included also contributed presentations made by participants where different topics were explored, among them: Such topics include: nonholonomic systems; flexible multibody systems; contact, impact and collision; numerical methods of differential-algebraical equations; simulation approaches; virtual modelling; mechatronic design; control; biomechanics; space structures and vehicle dynamics. These presentations have been reviewed and a selection will be published in this volume, and in special issues of the journals multibody System Dynamics and Mechanics of Structures and Machines.

To effectively solve the problem of interference caused by the change in rudder angle during the process of controlling a ship's course, nonlinear mathematical models of the control systems for a ship's course and rudder angle were established. The models were based on the motions of a ship and the working principle of the steering gear. In addition, sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) theory was used to study the simultaneous control of the two state variables, i.e., the ship's course and the rudder angle. First, for the high-order linear ordinary differential equations, suitable switching hyperplane and stable sliding mode motion equations were obtained. Then, using an affine nonlinear method, on the basis of obtaining the switching function, the SMVS controller structure of the nonlinear model was solved. Finally, a Simulink simulation was performed in the MATLAB software environment. The results show that SMVS theory has a good controlling effect on the nonlinear control system for a ship's course and rudder angle. © 2021 IEEE.

Dynamics of a nonlinear Oscillator: Dependencies on Extrinsic Conditions and Model Form Uncertainty 1

Closed-cell polymer foams are commonly employed as support structures to absorb shock and vibration in mechanical systems. Engineering analysts responsible for system designs that incorporate these closed-cell foams have a need to understand the effect that extrinsic environmental conditions have on the dynamic response of the mass supported by the foams. Environmental conditions such as preload, forcing energy, and forcing frequency, along with inherent model form uncertainty, have the potential to drive such a system into nonlinear, and sometimes chaotic, behavior. A suite of studies utilizing finite element (FE) analysis and numerical simulations of a material meta-model was used to perform a parametric study on the extrinsic forcing conditions to understand such effects on the nonlinear system dynamics. A simple two-dimensional (2D) plane strain FE model of a mass supported on both sides by foam was used to perform two tasks—to implicitly determine stress states from precompression in the foam and to explicitly solve for the system’s response when subject to a dynamic input. Using prior knowledge of uncertain quantities in the model and ranges of possible environmental conditions, parameter sets of extrinsic conditions were used as inputs to the models to obtain the time-domain responses of the suspended mass. The corresponding frequency domain characteristics of the suspended mass were used in conjunction with the input parameter distributions to form conclusions about the influence of variation in each parameter on the natural frequency of the system. Considering the results from the extrinsic property sensitivity analysis, the models were perturbed from linear, harmonic oscillation to showing signs of nonlinear motion. Small changes in extrinsic conditions while oscillating near the system’s nonlinear stiffness regime are hypothesized to cause sudden changes in a holistic response. This study proposes a nonlinear representation of the open circuit voltage curve for the state of charge estimation of LiFePO 4 battery cell. The proposed open circuit voltage representation is devised by dividing the linear term and nonlinear term of given curve shape. The advantage of the proposed method is that by establishing nonlinear battery cell model, the state of charge can be estimated even if there exists voltage plateau in the open circuit voltage curve. The conventional linearized method cannot estimate the SOC in such area. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified through simulation with virtual battery cell having wide voltage plateau area in open circuit voltage curve.

In recent years, the concept of virtual coupling (VC) has garnered significant attention as a means to improve capacity in railway systems. VC allows trains in a platoon to closely follow each other, enabling high-speed operations with reduced spacing. However, the impact of air resistances on train performance in virtual coupled platoons has not been extensively studied in existing literature. To address this gap, our study proposes two models to characterize the resistances experienced by trains in a platoon, building upon the classical single-point train model (SPM). The first model, a multi-input multi-output nonlinear model (MMN), captures the effect of velocities and following distances as input parameters. The second model, a deep learning-based model (DNU), predicts the resistances for individual trains based on their velocities and positions. To validate the proposed models, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are employed to quantify and evaluate their effectiveness. Experimental results demonstrate that resistances in the context of VC are significantly influenced by train following distances and velocities. Both the MMN and DNU models exhibit strong performance in calculating train resistances in virtual coupled platoons.
