In the course of a project related to green building design, we have created a group of eight parametric building models that can be manipulated interactively with respect to dimensions, number of floors, and a few other parameters. We report on the commonalities and differences between the models and the abstractions that we were able to identify.

The paper aims at discussing the accuracy of perspective restitution from view camera photos;view cameras are non-standard cameras frequently used in the past century for on field shooting of buildings and urban sites;this is why the reconstruction of lost buildings often deals with photos taken with a view camera. The case study chosen for the proposed experiment is an urban complex built in Palermo in the '50s. The site features a very regular layout with surfaces at right angle, that supports the graphic reconstruction of photos' inner and outer orientation. The site has been surveyed with a laser scanner;the point cloud provided the metric information needed for the evaluation of the accuracy of perspective restitution. The experiment used three sets of photos: a photo taken by Studio Alinari in the '60s;a couple of photos taken during the research work with a view camera;a photo taken with a standard mirrorless camera. The results of the experiment prove that view cameras do not modify the projective layout of perspective and that the accuracy of restitution from view camera photos is comparable to the accuracy of restitution from images taken with a standard camera.

We present the results of a point-cloud-based survey deriving from the use of image-based techniques, in particular with multi-image monoscopic digital photogrammetry systems and software, the so-called "structure-from-motion" technique. The aim is to evaluate the advantages and limitations of such procedures in architectural surveying, particularly in conditions that are "at the limit". A particular case study was chosen: the courtyard of Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, which can be considered the ideal example due to its notable vertical, rather than horizontal, layout. In this context, by comparing and evaluating the different results, we present experimentation regarding this single case study with the aim of identifying the best workflow to realise a complex, articulated set of representations-using 3d modelling and 2d processing-necessary to correctly document the particular characteristics of such an architectural object.

Image stabilisation (IS) is a family of approaches whose aim is to reduce motion blur in still images and shaking effect in video frames. A variety of techniques are currently implemented in cameras and camcorders: some involve hardware solutions, other are software approaches. In general, IS for still photography entails hardware in-camera or in-lens solutions. Video stabilisation, on the other hand, can be accomplished with software algorithms, either in real-time within the camera or in post-processing. Whereas IS aids photography and video making, its influence on the photogrammetric 3d modelling process has not been investigated. This article addresses this aspect. To this purpose, several laboratory and real-world tests were carried out, whose results showed that IS must be disabled when accuracy matters in photogrammetric projects. details are provided in the manuscript.

In the framework of the Project 3d-ICONS (***), different large archaeological models were acquired in Pompeii. In particular, the 3d Model of the House of Stallius Eros (Regio I, Insula VI, 13 - 14) was realized. This house conserves a rich vertical stratigraphy covering a large chronological period and offers interesting information about the development of this side of the ancient city. To implement a detailed survey of the house and to reconstruct the original structure of the domus, different types of survey were carried out, in order to provide a complete 3d model of the house. Three data-acquisition methodologies were used and their final results were compared in order to measure their accuracy, efficacy and velocity. At first, the domus was surveyed by an electronical total station, then two different interventions with un-calibrated photogrammetry were planned. The paper presents some preliminary results obtained by the three methodologies and the integration of the three models. The computational environments reproducing the ancient domus of Stallius Eros allows to propose new archaeological interpretations and hypothesis about the reconstruction of the ancient House.

In recent decades, the significant advances in digital technologies applied to cultural heritage have led to profound transformations in the activities of protection, conservation and enhancement. A current field of experimentation concerns 'rapid mapping' survey techniques with mobile mapping system (MMS). The use of these methodologies is increasingly widespread for the diagnostic and monitoring phases of the architectures. The potential of these techniques are manifold: these systems record, in a short time, a large number of information with a rather high level of accuracy. In particular, the research presented here has studied an 'innovative' Lidar mobile mapping methodology, NavVis VLX, with experimental perspectives, for the survey of the Cripta of the Cathedral of San Matteo in Salerno (Italy).

The arrangement of the five central figures of the east pediment of the temple of Zeus at Olympia has been the subject of scholarly debates since the discovery of the fragments more than a century ago. In theory, there are four substantially different arrangements, all of which have already been selected by certain scholars for various aesthetic, technical and other considerations. The present project tries to approach this controversy in a new way, by producing a virtual 3d reconstruction of the group. digital models of the statues were produced by scanning the original fragments and by reconstructing them virtually. For this purpose an innovative new software (Leonar3do) has also been employed. The virtual model of the pediment surrounding the sculptures was prepared on the basis of the latest architectural studies and afterwards the reconstructed models were inserted in this frame, in order to test the technical feasibility and aesthetic effects the four possible arrangements. The paper gives an overview of the entire work and presents the final results suggesting that two arrangements can be ruled out due to the limited space available in the pediment.

The complexity of archaeological sites hinders to get an integral modelling using the actual Geomatic techniques (i.e. aerial, close-range photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanner) individually, so a multi-sensor approach is proposed as the best solution to provide a 3d reconstruction and visualization of these complex sites. Sensor registration represents a riveting milestone when automation is required and when aerial and terrestrial dataset must be integrated. To this end, several problems must be solved: coordinate system definition, geo-referencing, co-registration of point clouds, geometric and radiometric homogeneity, etc. Last but not least, safeguarding of tangible archaeological heritage and its associated intangible expressions entails a multi-source data approach in which heterogeneous material (historical documents, drawings, archaeological techniques, habit of living, etc.) should be collected and combined with the resulting hybrid 3d of "Tolmo de Minateda" located models. The proposed multi-data source and multi-sensor approach is applied to the study case of "Tolmo de Minateda" archaeological site. A total extension of 9 ha is reconstructed, with an adapted level of detail, by an ultralight aerial platform (paratrike), an unmanned aerial vehicle, a terrestrial laser scanner and terrestrial photogrammetry. In addition, the own defensive nature of the site (i.e. with the presence of three different defensive walls) together with the considerable stratification of the archaeological site (i.e. with different archaeological surfaces and constructive typologies) require that tangible and intangible archaeological heritage expressions can be integrated with the hybrid 3d models obtained, to analyse, understand and exploit the archaeological site by different experts and heritage stakeholders.

The aim of this communication is to present the advantages and disadvantages of a Scan-to-BIM process applied to a heritage building in order to obtain advanced technical drawings to be used in the analysis and illustration of the project. The whole process described includes: the survey planification and data acquisition with a Terrestrial Laser Scanner;the processing and cleaning of the point cloud;the 3d mathematical modelling;a proposal for semi-automatic modelling of organic elements;and the import of the final model into a BIM environment. Rhinoceros (McNeel) and Revit (Autodesk) are the main programs used. The crucial aspect of this workflow is found at the moment of importing the geometrical model into Revit, having to accommodate the criteria of this program in terms of tolerances, geometric structure of the solids, incompatibilities with NURBS libraries, etc. The result is a BIM model divided into families and subcategories where visual attributes can be assigned per element, parameterized and other visual information can be added (orthophotographs, wireframe analysis drawings, etc.). In other words, a 3d model from which highly configurable advanced representations (plans, vertical sections, perspectives, isometric exploded view, etc.) can be obtained and with which to generate analyses from the field of Architectural Graphic Expression.

during summer 2010, Autodesk has released a still ongoing project called Project Photofly, freely downloadable from AutodeskLab web site until August 1 2011. Project Photofly based on computer-vision and photogrammetric principles, exploiting the power of cloud computing, is a web service able to convert collections of photographs into 3d models. Aim of our research was to evaluate the Project Photofly, through different case studies, for 3d modeling of cultural heritage monuments and objects, mostly to identify for which goals and objects it is suitable. The automatic approach will be mainly analyzed.
