We have developed a 3d reach-in tool to manually reconstruct 3d cortical surface patches from 2d brain atlas images. The first application of our cortex editor is building 3d functional maps, specifically Brodmann's areas. This tool may also be useful in clinical practice to adjust incorrectly mapped atlas regions due to the deforming effect of lesions. The cortex editor allows a domain expert to control the correlation of control points across slices. Correct correlation has been difficult for 3dreconstruction algorithms because the atlas slices are far apart and because of the complex topology of the cortex which differs so much from slice to slice. Also, higher precision of the resulting surfaces is demanded since these define 3d brain atlas features upon which future stereotactic surgery may be based. The cortex editor described in this paper provides a tool suitable for a domain expert to use in defining the 3d surface of a Brodmann's area.

A technology is presented called3dvirtual colonoscopy, which incorporates several advancedvisualization techniques to enable the physician to virtually examine the inner surface of the entire colon for identifying and inspecting colonic polyps. We first describe our unique process of acquiring and reconstructing a patient's colon model, followed by the novel visualization algorithms that we have developed to provide automatic planned navigations as well as interactive guided navigations inside the colon. Finally, we present our experimental results on a simulated plastic pipe phantom, the Visible Human data set, and patient data.

We present in this paper a method called3dvirtual colonoscopy, which is an alternative method to existing procedures of imaging the mucosal surface of the colon. Using 3dreconstruction of helical CT data and volume visualization techniques, we generate images of the inner surface of the colon as if the viewer's eyes were inside the colon. We also create interactive flythroughs and off-line automatically-produced animations through the inside of the colon. The visualization is accomplished with VolVis, which is a comprehensive system for interactive volume visualization. We are specifically interested in visualizing colonic polyps larger than one cm since these have a high probability of containing carcinoma. We present testing results of our method as applied to two plastic pipe simulations and to the Visible Human data set.

The pilot's achievement of situation awareness (SA) remains a challenge for cockpit designers. Various mainly technology driven solutions were suggested to improve SA. Another approach is the integration of data and the presentation of predictive data. This approach was pursued by the development of a perspective, pictorial display format for transport aircraft. The 4d- display and the accompanying Navigation-display greatly enhance pilots' awareness regarding their situation relative to terrain, obstacles, aircraft in the vicinity andvirtual elements. Since most of the information is contained in a graphical way, it can intuitively be seized by the observer. Especially in phases of high workload, the highly pre-processed information and its redundant and predictive presentation will significantly contribute to pilots' situation awareness. The displays were integrated into a fixed based flight simulator. Experiments with airline pilots showed that the perspective symbology reduced the pilot's workload and at the same time, improved the tracking of the demanded flight path. In order to provide the required graphics processing power for complex pictorial displays VdO-L develops a high performance symbol generator which meets the demands of prospective applications. The multi-processor system has been designed for modular avionics architectures and it provides full 2d and3d capabilities.

A 3d volume may be considered as a stack of 2d transverse layers. The layer manufacturing technique, and especially stereolithography, is a new technology for creating 3d models. We use a similar process to store data in 3d optical memories. It works as reverse computerized axial tomography (CAT) by constructing a volume slice by slice. To read out the information, we describe a method well known in CAT and very adapted to parallel optical processing. The method applies to morphosynthesis from data preprocessed by CAO and to 3dvisualization of objects, or concepts, which are not visible in the real world.

An ideal reconstruction function for 3d signals is developed which can be used as a texture map for a splat.
