In the last twenty years, the process of digitization of art and cultural heritage in general has undergone considerable developments pursuing purposes of conservation and analysis, first, but also of dissemination and knowledge of the works themselves or of the sites of historical - archaeological - architectural interest. For years, museums and archaeological sites have begun to digitize their assets to make them usable on online platforms. In this way, multiple high-resolution digital archives and virtual reconstructions of the sites were born that provide immersive experiences to the user. Above all, the latter stimulate the cinematographic and videogame industries to continuous research to improve the immersive and interactive experience, thanks to the use of virtual reality devices applied to increasingly detailed digital models, in some cases obtained thanks to the most modern detection instruments.

In recent years research works have shown that augmented reality tools can offer effective support for the dissemination of architectural heritage, when integrated into the information data extracted with surveying and representation tools and further data from other sources, e.g., history. The development and permanent updating of software platforms dedicated to augmented reality, i.e., Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore, as well as the introduction of new features, offer today affordable support for the development of AR solutions. Some operational difficulties are due to the rapid and constant evolution of the technologies;the available solutions can be compared to prototypes and the development of user experience effective solutions appears still lacking. The main subject in the construction of AR solutions is still linked to the development of effective methods to properly set up the visualization of 3d models and their interaction with the real scene. The chosen case study for the test of persistent AR solution for the visualization of works of art is the 'Tribuna', i.e., a monumental and sculptural marble apparatus, that decorated the main apse of the Cathedral of Palermo.

This paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research in which reconstructive digital modelling operates on different areas of heritage and at different scales to realize an analysis, interpretation, and communication experience in the field of museum valorization. It is, in fact, a work that includes both the philological reconstruction of the lost parts of a Buddha statue of Gandhara, dating back to the second century b.C. and kept at the Museum of Oriental Art (MAO) in Turin, and its contextualization within a coeval architectural complex, recognized as philologically compatible, located in Balo-Kale, in the region of Gandhara. The reconstructive models are finally used with communicative purposes for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications inside the museum.

Protecting and enhancing inherited assets is a duty of every age;ours requires disclosure through the services of the interconnected network, the only one, to date, capable of reaching a wide audience and with it attracting adequate economic resources for the implementation of programs. In keeping with the international definition of "Cultural Heritage", the paper describes the methodology that guided the construction in 3d of the monumental building sculpted in the iconographies between 52 and 62 Ad on the marble slab now preserved at the archaeological museum of Perugia. An informative workflow on what has been collected is proposed to then discuss the potential of its uses. The focus lies in particular on the possibility of the model to act as an interoperable collector to compare the reconstructive hypotheses. The final objective looks at the opportunity to create multimedia, multimodal and cross modal collaboration spaces to remedy aspects that, by affecting a wider audience of users, encourage socio-economic policies.

digital technology provides methods to record and preserve cultural heritage, support conservation and restoration efforts, and share our collective past with a worldwide audience. Between 2011 and 2017, the 3d Survey Group from Politecnico di Milano operated an annual workshop in the medieval village of Ghesc in which photogrammetry and laser-scanner surveys were carried out. The point cloud data acquired in these activities has become "time slices" documenting different stages of the preservation interventions in Ghesc and the evolution of advanced survey techniques. The main objective of this research is to streamline the workflow of delivering immersive and interactive experiences for complex heritage by directly utilising the 3d survey point cloud data, whether derived from a photogrammetric survey, static laser scanner, or mobile mapping. A point cloud-based multiplatform application is designed and delivered with versatile functions. It runs on PC and VR devices to provide virtual access to the village and narrate its revitalisation story. Additionally, it operates on mobile devices with an AR feature that brings vibrancy to the on-site experience. This application integrates high-fidelity point cloud models, detailed information on vernacular architecture in the Ossola Valley, and information on the preservation project with gamified learning experiences. The unconventional approach of using points as rendering primitives in virtual applications offers a practical solution for visualising complex heritage, enabling an efficient transition from the data collection stage to the data sharing stage without the need for 3d reconstruction and intricate BIM modelling. © 2024 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. 3d reconstruction system and multiobject local tracking algorithm designed for billiards

The use of virtual reality or augmented reality systems in billiards sports are useful tools for pure entertainment or improving the player's skills. depending on the purpose of these systems, tracking algorithms based on computer vision must be used. These algorithms are especially useful in systems aiming to reconstruct the trajectories followed by the balls after a strike. However, depending on the billiard modality, the problem of tracking multiple small identical objects, such as balls, is a complex task. In addition, when an amateur or nontop professional player uses low-frame-rate and low-resolution devices, problems such as blurred balls, blurred contours, or fuzzy edges, among others, arise. These effects have a negative impact on ball-tracking accuracy and reconstruction quality. Thus, this work proposes two contributions. The first contribution is a new tracking algorithm called "multiobject local tracking (MOLT)". This algorithm can track balls with high precision and accuracy even with motion blur caused by low-resolution and low-frame-rate devices. Moreover, the proposed MOLT algorithm is compared with nine tracking methods and four different metrics, outperforming the rest of the methods in the majority of the cases and providing a robust solution. The second contribution is a whole system to track (using the MOLT algorithm) and reconstruct the movements of the balls on a billiard table in a 3d virtual world using computer vision. The proposed system covers all steps from image capture to 3d reconstruction. The 3d reconstruction results have been qualitatively evaluated by different users through a series of questionnaires, obtaining an overall score of 7.6 (out of 10), which indicates that the system is a promising and useful tool for training. Finally, both the MOLT algorithm and the reconstruction system are tested in three billiard modalities: blackball, carom billiards, and snooker.

VRoot is an immersive extended reality reconstruction tool for root system architectures from 3d volumetric scans of soil columns. We have conducted a laboratory user study to assess the performance of new users with our software in comparison to established software. We utilize a plant model to derive a synthetic root architecture, providing a baseline for reconstruction. This demo showcases the processes and techniques contributing to exact and efficient manual root architecture reconstruction in virtual Reality. The extraction task typically is the sparse graph-structure extraction from a 3d magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) data set. We visualize the RSA directly within the MRI and offer selection-set-based methods of adapting and augmenting the root architecture. This application is in productive use at our partner institute, where it is used to analyze complex root images.

The process of building digital models of architectural heritage has become increasingly complex and accordingly this enables the potential of utilizing digital techniques as a tool in the context of research. depending on the objective of the research, there are various tools and outcomes. Ranging from information management projects by using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies, to providing virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) by using smart technologies for visualization of architectural heritage, there is an increasing demand because of their fast developing technological abilities. In today's fast-paced world, the abundance of dining options often overwhelms customers, making decision-making challenging. Traditional menus have 2d images that lack the depth and immersion needed for an accurate visual representation of each dish. Our ground-breaking approach utilizes state-of-the-art technology, converting restaurant-uploaded 2d images into 3d models. Through our mobile application and a QR code on the table, customers can visualize dishes, empowering them to make informed decisions before ordering. As a result, this application which is developed using Unity 3d, AliceVision and AR frameworks, transforms the dining experience. Our technology improves overall customer pleasure and engagement with the eating process by providing customers with comprehensive insights on meals, therefore transforming the way customers interact with restaurant menus.

Recent years have seen the investigation and 3d documentation of architectural heritage becoming more accessible. The digitalization process could be more efficient when artificial intelligence is used in processing point cloud models. This article investigates the use of machine learning classification algorithms and a Multi-Level Multi-Resolution (MLMR) methodology to classify two point cloud projects in China, Nanchan Ssu, and Fokuang Ssu. Performances of multiple algorithms and solutions are compared, proving the applicability of MLMR on the point clouds. The practices pointed out the significance of corresponding features to classification rules and a sound logic in designing a systematic label tree with hierarchical semantic meanings.
