virtual Museums (VM) are a new model of communication that aims at creating a personalized, immersive, and interactive way to enhance our understanding of the world around us. The term "VM" is a short-cut that comprehends various types of digital creations. One of the carriers for the communication of the virtual heritage at future internet level as de-facto standard is browser front-ends presenting the content and assets of museums. A major driving technology for the documentation and presentation of heritage driven media is real-time 3d content, thus imposing new strategies for a web inclusion. 3d content must become a first class web media that can be created, modified, and shared in the same way as text, images, audio and video are handled on the web right now. A new integration model based on a dOM integration into the web browsers. architecture opens up new possibilities for declarative 3d content on the web and paves the way for new application scenarios for the virtual heritage at future internet level. With special regards to the X3dOM project as enabling technology for declarative 3d in HTML, this paper describes application scenarios and analyses its technological requirements for an efficient presentation and manipulation of virtual heritage assets on the web.

In this contribution the 3d recording, 3d modelling and 3d visualisation of the fortification Kristiansten in Trondheim (Norway) by digital photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning are presented. The fortification Kristiansten was built after the large city fire in the year 1681 above the city and has been a museum since 1997. The recording of the fortress took place in each case at the end of August/at the beginning of September 2010 and 2011 during two two-week summer schools with the topic "digital Photogrammetry & Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Cultural Heritage documentation" at NTNU Trondheim with international students in the context of ERASMUS teaching programs. For data acquisition, a terrestrial laser scanner and digital SLR cameras were used. The establishment of a geodetic 3d network, which was later transformed into the Norwegian UTM coordinate system using control points, ensured a consistent registration of the scans and an orientation of the photogrammetric images. The fortress buildings were constructed in detail from photogrammetric photographs and point clouds using AutoCAd, while the fortress area and walls were modelled by triangle meshing in Geomagic. The visualisation of the fortress was carried out 2013 with the software Cinema 4d in the context of a lecture in the Master study programme Geomatics. The 3d model was textured and afterwards presented in a video. This 3d model was finally transferred into the game engine Unity for an interactive 3d visualisation on 3d monitors.

The survey and representation of river landscapes require complex operations related to the habitat identifying these environments that show heterogeneous connotations in which the anthropogenic contaminations, alternating with the peripheral areas, industrial or abandoned, are united in a territory with hybrid characteristics. In this regard it is proposed as a case study the experimentation carried out on the Pescara river basin that specifically compares two low cost detection systems comparing the results obtained to carry out environmental readings and 3d reconstructions of the territory. The operations of analysis and data acquisition include integrated procedures used with the aim of obtaining high-density 3d reconstructions of details applied on the river portions of Pescara-Aterno. Starting from the delta towards the inside, identification samples were analyzed to focus attention on the different criticalities. Integrated methodologies were employed involving the experimental use of specific software to obtain depth maps and territorial models compatible with real ones, crossing free open shared data obtained from the Google Earth Pro, photogrammetric reconstructions and information provided on site by RPAS instruments (Remoted Piloted Air System) that use the image based methodologies to carry out an in-depth scan of the territory.

Checking the irreversible process of clean-up is a delicate task that requires a work of synthesis between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, to define an effective operating protocol on a limited patch area to be extended later to the entire artefact's surface. In this paper, we present a new, quick, semi-automated 3d photogrammetry-based solution to support restorers in the open-air bronze artwork cleaning from corrosion and weathering decay. The solution allows the conservators to assess in real time and with a high level of fidelity in colour and shape, the 'surfaces' to be cleaned before, during and after the clear-out treatment. The solution besides allows an effective and valuable support tool for restorers to identify the original layer of the bronze surface, developed and validated during the ongoing restoration of the Neptune Fountain in Bologna.

An interdisciplinary team from the National Technical University of Athens is performing the restoration of the Holy Aedicule, which covers the Tomb of Christ within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The first important task was to geometrically document the monument for the production of the necessary base material on which the structural and material prospection studies would be based. One task of this action was to assess the structural behavior of this edifice in order to support subsequent works. It was imperative that the internal composition of the construction be documented as reliably as possible. To this end several data acquisition techniques were employed, among them ground penetrating radar. Interpretation of these measurements revealed the position of the rock, remnants of the initial cave of the burial of Christ. This paper reports on the methodology employed to construct the 3d model of the rock and introduce it into the 3d model of the whole building, thus enhancing the information about the structure. The conversion of the radargrams to horizontal sections of the rock is explained and the construction of the 3d model and its insertion into the 3d model of the Holy Aedicule is described.

The Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology (H. I. M. A.)(1) has been conducting an underwater archaeological research in the west coast of southern Pagasetikos Gulf, since 2000. Every year the underwater research focuses on specific archaeological targets that have been recovered during previous field campaigns. The current publication elaborates on the comprehensive documentation of the underwater archaeological site at Cape Glaros, during the 2015 field season, under the direction of the archaeologist Elias Spondylis. The 2015 research campaign was conducted within the framework of the ITACA-Innovation Technologies and Applications for Coastal Archaeological sites European Project (FP7/2007-2013, GA No 606805), at two archaeological sites, namely the Cape Glaros and Metohi. It was among the most important challenges of the project to successfully produce the detailed and accurate 3d mapping of the Cape Glaros site that covers an extended area. Four large concentrations of pottery finds and numerous anchors of different typology have been recorded, that can be dated from the late Hellenistic to the Byzantine periods. This challenge was tackled through the simultaneous implementation of three recording methods;photogrammetry, geodesy and conventional architectural mapping. The workflow of the documentation process, including data acquisition, processing and graphic visualization, along with the derived results are presented below.

RGB-d cameras, also known as range imaging cameras, are a recent generation of sensors. As they are suitable for measuring distances to objects at high frame rate, such sensors are increasingly used for 3d acquisitions, and more generally for applications in robotics or computer vision. This kind of sensors became popular especially since the Kinect v1 (Microsoft) arrived on the market in November 2010. In July 2014, Windows has released a new sensor, the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, based on another technology as its first device. However, due to its initial development for video games, the quality assessment of this new device for 3d modelling represents a major investigation axis. In this paper first experiences with Kinect v2 sensor are related, and the ability of close range 3d modelling is investigated. For this purpose, error sources on output data as well as a calibration approach are presented.

dense image matching methods enable efficient 3d data acquisition. digital cameras are available at high resolution, high geometric and radiometric quality and high image repetition rate. They can be used to acquire imagery for photogrammetric purposes in short time. Photogrammetric image processing methods deliver 3d information. For example, Structure from Motion reconstruction methods can be used to derive orientations and sparse surface information. In order to retrieve complete surfaces with high precision, dense image matching methods can be applied. However, a key challenge is the selection of images, since the image network geometry directly impacts the accuracy, as well as the completeness of the point cloud. Thus, the image stations and the image scale have to be selected according carefully to the accuracy requirements. Furthermore, most dense image matching solutions are based on multi-view stereo algorithms, where the matching is performed between selected pairs of images. Thus, stereo models have to be selected from the available dataset in respect to geometric conditions, which influence completeness, precision and processing time. Within the paper, the selection of images and the selection of optimal stereo models are discussed according to to photogrammetric surface acquisition using dense image matching. For this purpose, impacts of the acquisition geometry are evaluated for several datasets. Based on the results, a guideline for the acquisition of imagery for photogrammetric surface acquisition is presented. The simple and efficient capturing approach with "One panorama each step" ensures complete coverage and sufficiently redundant observations for a surface reconstruction with high precision and reliability.

The Samsung Gear 360 is a consumer grade spherical camera able to capture photos and videos. The aim of this work is to test the metric accuracy and the level of detail achievable with the Samsung Gear 360 coupled with digital modelling techniques based on photogrammetry/computer vision algorithms. Results demonstrate that the direct use of the projection generated inside the mobile phone or with Gear 360 Action direction (the desktop software for post-processing) have a relatively low metric accuracy. As results were in contrast with the accuracy achieved by using the original fisheye images (front and rear facing images) in photogrammetric reconstructions, an alternative solution to generate the equirectangular projections was developed. A calibration aimed at understanding the intrinsic parameters of the two lenses camera, as well as their relative orientation, allowed one to generate new equirectangular projections from which a significant improvement of geometric accuracy has been achieved.

Consecrated in 1297 as the monastery church of the four years earlier founded St. Catherine's monastery, the Gothic Church of St. Catherine was largely destroyed in a devastating bombing raid on January 2nd 1945. To counteract the process of disintegration, the departments of geo-information and lower monument protection authority of the City of Nuremburg decided to getting done a three dimensional building model of the Church of St. Catherine's. A heterogeneous set of data was used for preparation of a parametric architectural model. In effect the modeling of historic buildings can profit from the so called BIM method (Building Information Modeling), as the necessary structuring of the basic data renders it into very sustainable information. The resulting model is perfectly suited to deliver a vivid impression of the interior and exterior of this former mendicant orders' church to present observers.
