There are many healthcare facilities in Spain that were built throughout the second half of the 20th century, and compose an interesting built heritage designed by outstanding architects of the architectural avant-garde. Some of them were included in the dOCOMOMO's list of buildings to be preserved and documented. As a consequence, every intervention on the hospitals' heritage requires a special attention and needs a deep knowledge of the building in advance of taking action. On the other hand, such a particular heritage is being continuously updated according to the new standards that derive from the current tendencies in hospital design, and also from advances in healing techniques. In this context, 3d Modelling and virtual reality should have a decisive impact on the way hospitals' complex spaces are designed, as they become useful tools for describing the previous stages of the buildings, as well as the impacts of new proposals. They can even change our experience of the built environment. As a step forward, we are developing a methodology to be applied to hospital design where these tools, together with BIM models -and in the near future, high-end immersive VR systems-play an important role.

This study presents an integrated approach for reading coastal sites. A process aimed at protecting and enhancing these sites must be developed alongside a targeted interdisciplinary strategy, closely linked to the fields of archaeology, survey, landscape reading, morphology of the territory and geology. These must no longer be managed as individual cognitive elements, but within a single comprehensive analytical interpretation model. The experiment activity carried out along the rocky area of Aci Castello, on the eastern coast of Sicily, was developed using a methodological approach based on the integration of 3d data coming from various survey technologies -3d laser scanning, mobile mapping and echo sounder systems. The aim of the experiment was to create a complete three-dimensional model of the studied area, focused on obtaining a dynamic understanding, that is punctual and comprehensive, of the site's value and fragility.

The paper aims to investigate the possibilities of using the panorama-based VR to survey data related to that set of activities for planning and management of urban areas, belonging to the Smart Cities strategies. The core of our workflow is to facilitate the visualization of the data produced by the infrastructures of the Smart Cities. A graphical interface based on spherical panoramas, instead of complex three-dimensional could help the user/citizen of the city to better know the operation related to control units spread in the urban area. From a methodological point of view three different kind of spherical panorama acquisition has been tested and compared in order to identify a semi-automatic procedure for locating homologous points on two or more spherical images starting from a point cloud obtained from the same images. The points thus identified allow to quickly identify the same hot-spot on multiple images simultaneously. The comparison shows how all three systems have proved to be useful for the purposes of the research but only one has proved to be reliable from a geometric point of view to identify the locators useful for the construction of the virtual tour.

digital documentation and 3d modelling of archaeological sites are important for understanding, definition and recognition of the values of the sites and of the archaeological finds. The most part of archaeological sites are outdoor location, but a cover to preserve the ruins protects often parts of the sites. The possibility to acquire data with different techniques and merge them by using a single reference system allows creating multi-parties models in which 3d representations of the individual objects can be inserted. The paper presents the results of a recent study carried out by Geomatics Laboratory of University of Palermo for the digital documentation and 3d modelling of Eraclea Minoa archaeological site. This site is located near Agrigento, in the south of Sicily (Italy) and is one of the most famous ancient Greek colonies of Sicily. The paper presents the results of the integration of different data source to survey the Eraclea Minoa archaeological site. The application of two highly versatile recording systems, the TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning) and the RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System), allowed the Eraclea Minoa site to be documented in high resolution and with high accuracy. The integration of the two techniques has demonstrated the possibility to obtain high quality and accurate 3d models in archaeological survey.

A sequential application of two global models defined on a variational framework is proposed for the detection of polygonal shapes in 3d models of complex architectures. As a first step, the procedure involves the use of the Mumford and Shah (1989) 1st-order variational model in dimension two (gridded height data are processed). In the Mumford-Shah model an auxiliary function detects the sharp changes, i.e., the discontinuities, of a piecewise smooth approximation of the data. The Mumford-Shah model requires the global minimization of a specific functional to simultaneously produce both the smooth approximation and its discontinuities. In the proposed procedure, the edges of the smooth approximation derived by a specific processing of the auxiliary function are then processed using the Blake and Zisserman (1987) 2nd-order variational model in dimension one (edges are processed in the plane). This second step permits to describe the edges of an object by means of piecewise almost-linear approximation of the input edges themselves and to detects sharp changes of the first-derivative of the edges so to detect corners. The Mumford-Shah variational model is used in two dimensions accepting the original data as primary input. The Blake-Zisserman variational model is used in one dimension for the refinement of the description of the edges. The selection among all the boundaries detected by the Mumford-Shah model of those that present a shape close to a polygon is performed by considering only those boundaries for which the Blake-Zisserman model identified discontinuities in their first derivative. The output of the procedure are hence shapes, coming from 3d geometric data, that can be considered as polygons. The application of the procedure is suitable for, but not limited to, the detection of objects such as foot-print of polygonal buildings, building facade boundaries or windows contours. The present work is suggested as a contribution to the debate on Reverse Modeling (RM) topic in the Cultural Heritage field. It wants to test the methodology, the limits and the bottlenecks of the RM pipeline in the architectural field, with particular attention to the geometric shapes reading and interpretation. The mathematical reconstruction of architectural models represents an overlaid result of anthropic and natural transformations framed inside a complex process of shape simplification and surface generation. This pipeline must be supported by a careful Heritage reading by means of architecture rules, both preserving the actual shape and the original intent of the building designer. The integration of these last two aspects make the process of RM applied to CH extremely complex. It involves a cognitive activity aimed at choosing on the one hand the best 3d survey technique to obtain reliable 3d data, on the other hand reaching a suitable architectural knowledge for achieving a plausible modeling result. The research presented describes a RM process applied to an ecclesiastical architecture, highlighting some key passages: an integrated survey approach to extract geometrical information, data analysis and generation of a mathematical 3d model, reliable from both a formal and cultural point of view.

Bosnia and Herzegovina always has been a place where the East meets the West. Over 1000 years, different cultures, religions and civilizations have left their remains in this small country in Western Balkans. despite all wars and tragic destructions, today in the heart of Sarajevo one can find mosques, Catholic and Orthodox churches and Jewish synagogues next to each other and people of different nations and religions living together in mutual respect and friendship. Multiethnic spirit of Bosnia and Herzegovina lives through its cultural heritage. Therefore our task is to ensure its presentation and preservation using Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). So far researchers have achieved significant results by creating several virtual museums. In this paper we will present the Museum of Bosnian Traditional Objects, digital Catalogue of Stecaks and the virtual Museum of Sarajevo Assassination, giving an overview of the process of creating virtual environments from multiple data sources based on various 3d digitization technologies: some based on traditional 3d modeling, other based on laser scanning or photogrametric techniques.

documentation of cultural assets through improved acquisition processes for advanced 3d modelling is one of the main challenges to be faced in order to address, through digital representation, advanced analysis on shape, appearance and conservation condition of cultural heritage. 3d modelling can originate new avenues in the way tangible cultural heritage is studied, visualized, curated, displayed and monitored, improving key features such as analysis and visualization of material degradation and state of conservation. An applied research focused on the analysis of surface specifications and material properties by means of 3d laser scanner survey has been developed within the project of digital Preservation of FAUUSP building, Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. The integrated 3d survey has been performed by the dIAPReM Center of the department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara in cooperation with the FAUUSP. The 3d survey has allowed the realization of a point cloud model of the external surfaces, as the basis to investigate in detail the formal characteristics, geometric textures and surface features. The digital geometric model was also the basis for processing the intensity values acquired by laser scanning instrument;this method of analysis was an essential integration to the macroscopic investigations in order to manage additional information related to surface characteristics displayable on the point cloud.

The following research aims to exploit the low-cost technologies, for the survey and mapping of historical archaeology in the Roman context. The main purposes of the research is to implement a large-scale survey campaign to understand the geometry and the materiality of the artefacts examined. Three-dimensional survey from photography, allows an immediate mapping of the materiality, of the degradation and of the architectural elements characteristic of the architecture in question. From the model it is possible to obtain an image that is faithful to the reality that can be the basis for developments in many disciplines such as, for example, in the restoration project, for the material analysis and the mapping of the degradation. The applications for this type of mapping are numerous, one of those proposed in this research concerns the virtual musealisation of historical artifacts. More and more in recent years, museums are exploiting the capabilities of three-dimensional modeling software of architectural elements to interactively convey architectural elements. A methodology of work that in recent archaeological excavations is not based solely on the didactic divulgation of the history of a place, but during the excavation phase on the mapping and cataloging of uncovered finds.

The development of efficient strategies to document cultural heritage sites is an active research field. One promising avenue to address that need may be found in the use of portable laser scanners. Such scans provide a mapping-grade level of accuracy, yet their level of characterization is limited by the low resolution of the generated point cloud and by the relatively noisy measurements. In this paper we study methods to attenuate the noisy responses as a means to improve the data quality and highlight the underlying structure. Unlike the prevailing plane-fitting-based filtering approaches that tend to blur salient features, we consider the use of local structure properties in our denoising strategy. We use the normal-based bilateral filtering of point clouds as a platform, yet introduce new normal preservation concepts whose incorporation significantly improves the overall denoising process performance. Results demonstrate how our proposed solution outperforms the standard plane-filtering and the naive bilateral approach. The attenuation we achieve yields a more visually pleasing entity description as well as simplified processing of subsequent procedures, including feature extraction and semantic segmentation.
