The point cloud interpretation and reconstruction of 3d-buildings from point clouds has already been treated for a few decades. There are many articles which consider the different methods and workows of the automatic detection and reconstruction of geometrical objects from point clouds. Each method is suitable for the special geometry type of object or sensor. General approaches are rare. In our work we present an algorithm which develops the optimal process sequence of the automatic search, detection and reconstruction of buildings and building components from a point cloud. It can be used for the detection of the set of geometric objects to be reconstructed, independent of its destruction. In a simulated example we reconstruct a complete Russian-orthodox church starting from the set of detected structural components and reconstruct missing components with high probability.

The development of massive data captures techniques (MdC) in recent years, such as the Terrestrial laser Scanner (TLS), raises the possibility of developing new assessment procedures for architectural heritage. The 3d models that it is able to obtain is a great potential tool, both for conservation purposes and for historical and architectural studies. The paper proposes a simple, non-invasive methodology for the assessment of masonry vaults from point clouds which makes it possible to obtain relevant data about the formal anomalies. The methodology is tested in Tortosa's Gothic Cathedral's vaults, where the geometrical differences between vaults, a priori equal, are identified and related with the partially known construction phases. The procedure can be easily used on any other vaulted construction of any kind, but is especially useful to deal with the complex geometry of Gothic masonry vaults.

This contribution introduces an original method for dynamically surveying the vault and underwater parts of a canal-tunnel for 3d modeling. The recording system, embedded on a barge, is composed of cameras that provide images of the above-water part of the tunnel, and a sonar that acquires underwater 3d profiles. In this contribution we propose to fully exploit the capacities of photogrammetry to deal with the issue of geo-referencing data in the absence of global positioning system (GPS) data. More specifically, we use it both for reconstructing the vault and side walls of the tunnel in 3d and for estimating the trajectory of the boat, which is necessary to rearrange sonar profiles to form the 3d model of the canal. We report on a first experimentation carried out inside a canal-tunnel and show promising preliminary results that illustrate the potentialities of the proposed approach.

Google Street View is a technology implemented in several Google services/applications (e.g. Google Maps, Google Earth) which provides the user, interested in viewing a particular location on the map, with panoramic images (represented in equi-rectangular projection) at street level. Generally, consecutive panoramas are acquired with an average distance of 5-10 m and can be compared to a traditional photogrammetric strip and, thus, processed to reconstruct portion of city at nearly zero cost. Most of the photogrammetric software packages available today implement spherical camera models and can directly process images in equi-rectangular projection. Although many authors provided in the past relevant works that involved the use of Google Street View imagery, mainly for 3d city model reconstruction, very few references can be found about the actual accuracy that can be obtained with such data. The goal of the present work is to present preliminary tests (at time of writing just three case studies has been analysed) about the accuracy and reliability of the 3d models obtained from Google Street View panoramas.

The paper describes the final step of the Baratti in 3d project, aimed at the dissemination of the important archaeological heritage of the Etruscan city of Populonia (Tuscany, Italy). The chain of "data metrical surveying - 2d and 3d representation communication" has been applied on the "Princes's tombs" of the monumental necropolis of San Cerbone and its finds to provide a detailed description of their context, workmanship, morphological characteristics and materials to realize the virtual recreation. The preservation of the finds from the excavations in two different museums far from the archaeological area (the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze and the Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Populonia, in Piombino) makes the understanding of the original context very difficult for visitors. Thus the "Baratti in 3d Project" has been conceived in order to document the tombs, their finds and produce the "virtual match" showing in its entirety the environmental and architectural provenance and material ritual context and in order to display in innovative visual approach this archaeological heritage. To complement the interactive platform, as a physical fallout of this project has been realized "A museum in every sense", a permanent exhibition in the Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Populonia.

The paper presents in detail the method used to acquire 2d and 3d representations for the Large Tower of the Roman fortress from Noviodunum (Isaccea, Tulcea County). The available implements were a total station, a digital camera and some software for handling data. The method is not new by any rate, but well fitted to the aims - recording archaeological data on ruined but massif walls, with rough surfaces - and with a limited budget. Lately considered as a low cost procedure, laser scanning is still costly and rare in some East-European countries. Our method, as simple as it is, provides reliable data as a 3d survey, along texture details, at the lowest price, on unfinished fieldwork, preserving and picturing a stage of knowledge about the site and the architectural bodies.

Fast but precise 3d reconstructions of cultural heritage scenes are becoming very requested in the archaeology and architecture. While modern multi-image 3d reconstruction approaches provide impressive results in terms of textured surface models, it is often the need to create a 3d model for which only a single photo (or few sparse) is available. This paper focuses on the single photo 3d reconstruction problem for lost cultural objects for which only a few images are remaining. We use image-to-voxel translation network (Z-GAN) as a starting point. Z-GAN network utilizes the skip connections in the generator network to transfer 2d features to a 3d voxel model effectively (Figure 1). Therefore, the network can generate voxel models of previously unseen objects using object silhouettes present on the input image and the knowledge obtained during a training stage. In order to train our Z-GAN network, we created a large dataset that includes aligned sets of images and corresponding voxel models of an ancient Greek temple. We evaluated the Z-GAN network for single photo reconstruction on complex structures like temples as well as on lost heritage still available in crowdsourced images. Comparison of the reconstruction results with state-of-the-art methods are also presented and commented.

The real time rendering of complex virtual city models has become more important in the last few years for many practical applications like realistic navigation or urban planning. For maximum rendering performance, the complexity of the geometry or textures can be reduced by decreasing the resolution until the data set can fully reside on the memory of the graphics card. This typically results in a low quality of the virtual city model. Alternatively, a streaming algorithm can load the high quality data set from the hard drive. However, this approach requires a large amount of persistent storage providing several gigabytes of static data. We present a system that uses a texture atlas containing atomic tiles like windows, doors or wall patterns, and that combines those elements on-the-fly directly on the graphics card. The presented approach benefits from a sophisticated randomization approach that produces lots of different facades while the grammar description itself remains small. By using a ray casting apporach, we are able to trace through transparent windows revealing procedurally generated rooms which further contributes to the realism of the rendering. The presented method enables real time rendering of city models with a high level of detail for facades while still relying on a small memory footprint.

digital technologies have introduced fundamental changes in the forms, content, and media of communication. Indeed, some have suggested we are in the early stages of a seismic shift comparable to that in antiquity with the transition from a primarily oral culture to one based upon writing. The digital transformation is rapidly displacing the long-standing hegemony of text, and restoring in part social, bodily, oral and spatial elements, but in radically reconfigured forms and formats. Contributing to and drawing upon such changes and possibilities, scholars and those responsible for sites preserving or displaying cultural heritage, have undertaken projects to explore the properties and potential of the online communities enabled by "virtual Worlds" and related platforms for teaching, collaboration, publication, and new modes of disciplinary research. Others, keenly observing and evaluating such work, are poised to contribute to it. It is crucial that leadership be provided to ensure that serious and sustained investigation be undertaken by scholars who have experience, and achievements, in more traditional forms of research, and who perceive the emerging potential of virtual World work to advance their investigations. The virtual Museums Transnational Network will seek to engage such scholars and provide leadership in this emerging and immensely attractive new area of cultural heritage exploration and experience. This presentation reviews examples of the current "state of the art" in heritage based virtual World initiatives, looking at the new modes of social interaction and experience enabled by such online communities, and some of the achievements and future aspirations of this work.

Time effects and human offenses threaten cultural heritage. The constant observation and periodic maintenance activities are the most suitable safeguarding solution: they can limit risk situations and facilitate interventions. Today, planned conservation is thus the best pattern to preserve the monuments as focused on small preventive restoration: actions organized and structured according to steady and regular monitoring. The preliminary survey, the interpretation of metric and material data and the subsequent verification of the evolution of instability and degradation phenomena based on a comparison with previous information, is a long and expensive activity if carried out by traditional systems. Otherwise, 3d laser scanning and image-based reconstruction methodologies - if properly applied within optimized operational practices - can allow both the systematic control of assets' conditions and the evaluation of their health status and decay problems in a short time and with lower costs. This paper intends to show the validity of such an innovative methodology through a case study applied to the former church and convent of Sant'Agostino (St. Augustine) in Bergamo.
