Airborne LidAR technology has become an essential tool in archaeology during the last two decades since it allows archaeologists to measure and map items or structures that would otherwise be hidden under vegetation. In order to detect and characterise the archaeological evidence, it is a common practice to extract accurate digital terrain models (dTM) by filtering out the vegetation from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) datasets. Although previous approaches have performed well in ALS filtration, they are still subject to several variables (flight height, forest cover, type of sensors utilised, etc.) and are frequently integrated into expensive commercial software or customised for specific locations. This study presents a workflow for treating ALS archaeological datasets using machine learning algorithms for both filtering the vegetation and detecting hidden structures. The workflow is applied to two different archaeological environments (in terms of structures, vegetation, landscape, point density), and results demonstrate that the pipeline is rapid and accurate, and the prediction model is transferable.

Safeguarding the cultural patrimony represents one of the objectives and one of the most important challenges of our time, because only this can ensure the conservation of the documented historical memory of our civilizations. The first level of safeguarding is knowledge, that means, in some ways and in any case, to document. Indeed, documentation constitutes an indispensable support for the protection of the cultural patrimony. In recent times, the evolution of concepts and the progress of technologies have meant that the cultural and scientific debate should evolve in the examination of which type of documentation is the most suitable. Today, the need to observe city sites by entering their meanders and penetrating their reality with the aim of being able to interpret, understand and appreciate the values of the more recondite intimacies of the places, is increasingly felt. The methodological approach of this study tackles the issue of managing information that is highly interrelated, referring to the entire monumental unicum of Ortigia, by means of recognition of the parts, at times also fragmentary. With this responsibility, a suite of digital instruments, online and offline, called Crabnebula, has been conceived and already applied to a significant portion of Ortigia, with the aim of uniting various useful information towards a critical interpretation of the places: from the integrated environmental, urban and architectonic survey, to the three-dimensional rendered model.

The paper illustrates the project of an interdisciplinary team composed of archaeologists and researchers of the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa. The synergy between these Centres has recently allowed for a more articulated 3d simulation of the agora of Segesta. Here, the archaeological excavations have brought to light the remains of a huge public building (stoa) of the Late-Hellenistic Period. Computer graphics and image-based modeling have been used to monitor, document and record the different phases of the excavation activity (layers, findings, wall structures) and to create a 3d model of the whole site. In order to increase as much as possible the level of interaction, all the models can be managed by an application specially designed for an immersive virtual environment (CAVE-like system). By using hands tracking sensor (Leap) in a non-standard way, the application allows for a completely hand-free interaction with the simulation of the agora of Segesta and the different phases of the fieldwork activities. More specifically, the operator can use simple hand gestures to activate a natural interface, scroll and visualize the perfectly overlapped models of the archaeological layers, pop up the models of single meaningful objects discovered during the excavation, and obtain all the relative metadata (stored in a dedicated server) which are visualizable on external devices (e.g. tablets or monitors) without further wearable devices. All these functions are contextualized within the whole simulation of the agora, so that it is possible to verify old interpretations and enhance new ones in real-time, simulating within the CAVE the whole archaeological investigation, going over the different phases of the excavation in a more rapid way, getting information which could have been ignored during the fieldwork, and verifying, even ex-post, issues not correctly documented during the fieldwork. The development of massive data captures techniques (MdC) in recent years, such as the Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), raises the possibility of developing new assessment procedures for architectural heritage. The 3d models that it is able to obtain is a great potential tool, both for conservation purposes and for historical and architectural studies. The paper proposes a simple, non-invasive methodology for the assessment of masonry vaults from point clouds which makes it possible to obtain relevant data about the formal anomalies. The methodology is tested in Tortosa's Gothic Cathedral's vaults, where the geometrical differences between vaults, a priori equal, are identified and related with the partially known construction phases. The procedure can be easily used on any other vaulted construction of any kind, but is especially useful to deal with the complex geometry of Gothic masonry vaults.

In this paper the current findings to date of the Historic Building Information Model (HBIM) of the Four Courts in dublin are presented. The Historic Building Information Model (HBIM) forms the basis for both structural and conservation analysis to measure the impact of war damage which still impacts on the building. The laser scan survey was carried out in the summer of 2014 of the internal and external structure. After registration and processing of the laser scan survey, the HBIM was created of the damaged section of the building and is presented as two separate workflows in this paper. The first is the model created from historic data, the second a procedural and segmented model developed from laser scan survey of the war damaged drum and dome. From both models structural damage and decay simulations will be developed for documentation and conservation analysis.

This paper aims to indicate a new methodological approach, based on generative algorithms, to attempt a more in-depth and transversal understanding of the behavior of these wooden structures. The developed method accelerates modeling procedures and brings on new tools for analyzing these structural systems when surveyed through TLS devices. The main topic of this work is the most recent step of a wider research project that has analyzed a few wooden roofing structures in the area of bologna. These case studies are represented by a set of important churches in Bologna, all built between the 16th and 18th centuries, whose pitched roofs are supported by timber trusses. Among them, the most impressive is the wooden truss in the St. Peter Cathedral that has approximately 26 meters of span, 7 meters of height for nearly 9 tons of weight. It also shows a complex static conception with the coexistence of an external nondeformable triangle and an internal virtual discharging arc. The focus is on the transformation of the point cloud into 3d models using parametric modeling tools such as Grasshopper generative algorithms. These algorithms, once created for a single truss, allow to automatically generating 3d models of all trusses, changing only input parameters.

This paper presents an online application called 3d integrator enabling visual cross-examinations of architectural and acoustic data on web browsers, and explains the rationale behind its development. The tool consists of a series of overlays developed over the Potree 3d point cloud renderer. The 3d integrator is used to display visually, in an interactive environment, the 3d point clouds resulting from a survey protocol tailored to the specific needs of the corpus under scrutiny - fifteen small scale edifices often referred to as "minor heritage assets - and to the research's overall ambition, co-reasoning on architectural and acoustic features at an interdisciplinary level. One of the tool's distinctive features is to project abstract information (acoustic indicators) in a "close to real" 3d space (point clouds), hence merging scientific visualisation and information visualisation practices. The paper shortly sums up the particularities of the survey protocol, and discusses in detail the implementation of the analytical add-ons that have been introduced (visual trace of the survey protocol itself, exploitation of panoramas, volume calculation, and exploratory 3d representation of acoustic indicators). Finally, early uses of the tool are summarised and the services it actually offers at this stage are commented.

Italian Cultural Heritage is rich in fascinating Underground Heritage (UH) to be protected and preserved because of its fragility and historical importance. An accurate and high-resolution 3d model is essential to reach an appropriate level of knowledge to safeguard caves but there are several obstacles to face. Underground data acquisition and following elaborations are problematic due to environmental conditions such as lack of homogeneous light sources, highly absorbing and unstable surfaces, narrow spaces and complex geometry. For these reasons, the integration of different techniques is mandatory to achieve a valid final product that could be an important basis for consolidation, preservation and valorization of the UH. In this paper, an integrated survey method is tested for a realistic digital reconstruction of hypogeal spaces. In addition to outputs for experts of conservation, the creation of multimedia products for a wider audience of non-professionals users is investigated as a way to preserve UH from decay. Thanks to VR, visitors virtually walk through the underground galleries observing and interacting, making accessible also fragile environments with forbidden access due to preservation policies

The scale models of fortified towns belonging to the Plans-Reliefs collection are exceptional witnesses of the formation of the French territory. The aim of the URBANIA project is the valorisation and the diffusion of this heritage through the creation of virtual models. The town scale model of Strasbourg at 1: 600 currently exhibited in the Historical Museum of Strasbourg was selected as a case study. We develop and experiment an automatic procedure to identify and reconstruct military architecture works from point cloud digitisation of this fragile and bulky heritage. A priori knowledge formalized in a domain ontology informs the identification of the works - via geometrical feature comparison and consistency evaluation within the fortification system morphology - and their parametric 3d reconstruction refined by direct fit to the initial point cloud.

The paper presents the first results of the metric and geometric investigations carried out in the analysis of the stamps on Greek-Italic amphorae of Neapolitan production, found during the archaeological excavation of Piazza Nicola Amore, in Naples, Italy. The experiments were carried out with a view to defining a methodological process useful on the one hand to document in a digital archive the three-dimensional morphology of the artefact under investigation, and on the other to allow new readings, through a manipulation of the data that goes beyond the physical limits of the artefact itself. In particular, the research presented here proposes the topological investigation for the identification of stamps obtained from the same punch and therefore the possibility of ideally reconstructing the printing matrix. Since the stamps left by the punches on the amphorae are impressed at millimetric depths, the stamps are not always easy to read using traditional archaeological documentation methods. The research operations therefore began with the digitisation of a substantial number of finds by means of three-dimensional, reality-based surveys of sub-millimetre detail. Before proceeding with specific correspondence analyses, the archaeological classification based on the typological similarities of the marks was of great support.
