In the cultural heritage field, several specialists like archaeologists, architects, geomaticians, historians, etc. are used to work together. With the upcoming technologies allowing to capture efficiently data in the field, to digitize historical documents, to collect worldwide information related to the monuments under study, the wish to summarize all the sources of data (including the knowledge of the specialists) into one 3d model is a big challenge. In order to guarantee the reliability of the proposed reconstructed 3d model, it is of crucial importance to integrate the level of uncertainty assigned to it. From a geometric point of view, uncertainty is often defined, quantified and expressed with the help of statistical measures. However, for objects reconstructed based on archaeological assumptions, statistical measures are not appropriate. This paper focuses on the decomposition of 3d models into levels of uncertainties (LoUs) and on the best way to visualize them through two case studies: the castle of Kagenfels and the Horbourg-Wihr Castellum, both located in Alsace, France. The first one is well documented through still ongoing excavations around its remains, whereas the second one disappeared under the urbanization of the city. An approach enabling, on the 3d models, not only to quantify but also to visualize uncertainties coming from archaeological assumptions is addressed. Finally, the efficiency of the approach for qualifying the proposed 3d model of the reconstructed castle regarding its reliability is demonstrated.

Archaeology is by its nature strictly connected with the physical landscape and as such it explores the inter-relations of individuals with places in which they leave and the nature that surrounds them. Since its earliest stages, archaeology demonstrated its permeability to scientific methods and innovative techniques or technologies. Archaeologists were indeed between the first to adopt GIS platforms (since already almost three decades) on large scale and are now between the most demanding customers for emerging technologies such as digital photogrammetry and drone-aided aerial photography. This paper aims at presenting case studies where the "3d approach" can be critically analysed and compared with more traditional means of documentation. Spot-light is directed towards the benefits of a specifically designed platform for user to access the 3d point-clouds and explore their characteristics. Beside simple measuring and editing tools, models are presented in their actual context and location, with historical and archaeological information provided on the side. As final step of a parallel project on geo-referencing and making available a large archive of aerial photographs, 3d models derived from photogrammetric processing of images have been uploaded and linked to photo-footprints polygons. Of great importance in such context is the possibility to interchange the point-cloud colours with satellite imagery from OpenLayers. This approach makes it possible to explore different landscape configurations due to time-changes with simple clicks. In these cases, photogrammetry or 3d laser scanning replaced, sided or integrated legacy documentation, creating at once a new set of information for forthcoming research and ideally new discoveries.

Cultural heritage structural documentation is of great importance in terms of historical preservation, tourism, educational and spiritual values. Cultural heritage across the world, and in Nepal in particular, is at risk from various natural hazards (e.g. earthquakes, flooding, rainfall etc), poor maintenance and preservation, and even human destruction. This paper evaluates the feasibility of low-cost photogrammetric modelling cultural heritage sites, and explores the practicality of using photogrammetry in Nepal. The full pipeline of 3d modelling for heritage documentation and conservation, including visualisation, reconstruction, and structure analysis, is proposed. In addition, crowdsourcing is discussed as a method of data collection of growing prominence.

At present, digital documentation recorded in the form of raster or vector files is the obligatory way of inventorying historical objects. The orthoimage is a cartometric form of photographic presentation of information in the two-dimensional reference system. The paper will discuss the issue of automation of the orthoimage generation basing on the TLS data and digital images. At present attempts are made to apply modern technologies not only for the needs of surveys, but also during the data processing. This paper will present attempts aiming at utilisation of appropriate algorithms and the author's application for automatic generation of the projection plane, for the needs of acquisition of intensity orthoimages from the TLS data. Such planes are defined manually in the majority of popular TLS data processing applications. A separate issue related to the RGB image generation is the orientation of digital images in relation to scans. It is important, in particular in such cases when scans and photographs are not taken simultaneously. This paper will present experiments concerning the utilisation of the SIFT algorithm for automatic matching of intensity orthoimages of the intensity and digital (RGB) photographs. Satisfactory results of the process of automation, as well as in relation to the quality of resulting orthoimages have been obtained.

This paper explores how a computer-generated reconstruction of a church can be adapted to create a panoramic film that is presented in a panoramic viewer and also on a wrap-around projection system. It focuses on the fundamental principles of creating 360 degrees films, not only in 3d modelling software, but also presents how to record 360 degrees video using panoramic cameras inside the heritage site. These issues are explored in a case study of Charles Church in Plymouth, UK that was bombed in 1941 and has never been rebuilt. The generation of a 3d model of the bombed church started from the creation of five spherical panoramas and through the use of Autodesk ImageModeler software. The processed files were imported and merged together in Autodesk 3ds Max where a visualisation of the ruin was produced. A number of historical images were found and this collection enabled the process of a virtual reconstruction of the site. The aspect of merging two still or two video panoramas (one from 3d modelling software, the other one recorded on the site) from the same locations or with the same trajectories is also discussed. The prototype of 360 degrees non-linear film tells a narrative of a wartime wedding that occurred in this church. The film was presented on two 360 degrees screens where members of the audience could make decisions on whether to continue the ceremony or whether to run away when the bombing of the church starts. 3d modelling software made this possible to render a number of different alternatives (360 degrees images and 360 degrees video). Immersive environments empower the visitor to imagine the building before it was destroyed.

Indoor Mobile Mapping Systems (IMMSs) technologies are becoming increasingly popular thanks to the possibility of acquiring a massive amount of 3d data in a fast and effective way in those areas where GNSS signal is unavailable, like urban canyons, densely vegetated areas, underground sites and buildings. They offer an efficient way to produce point clouds but with noticeably lower accuracy than the traditional Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). The present paper wants to analyse two different methods to improve the accuracy of the point cloud coming from an IMMS survey in a vast urban scenario. The first approach uses points collected during an RTK GNSS survey as Ground Control Points (GCPs). The second one involves TLS static scans as Ground Control Scans (GCSs). Both these procedures allow us to introduce constraints before generating the rigid final point cloud. The tested IMMS is the Backpack Heron MS Twin Color, produced by Gexcel S.r.l. The instrument was tested during the acquisition of the historical centre of Meda (MB) in the northern part of Italy. Results show that in those areas between the constraints, the maximum error of residuals on checkpoints is some decimetres. The IMMS has allowed us to quickly survey a vast area not otherwise obtainable with traditional survey techniques. The developed procedures proved to be essential for proper reconstruction of the environment.

The detailed and thorough documentation of monuments is a rather complex process that requires the application of the best available state of the art techniques in order to preserve, restore, promote and make cultural heritage accessible to the public. This paper presents the 3d Geometric documentation of a part of the medieval fortress of Chios, focussing in particular on the practical challenges which the object presented. The case study is a part of the fortified construction, consisting of a bastion, a watch tower on top of this bastion and a significant part of its walls with a surface of about 1053 m(2) in total. The goal of the survey was to produce an accurate 3d detailed textured model and a series of coloured orthophotos and 2d vector drawings. The documentation methods employed included close-range automated photogrammetry and image-based modelling, terrestrial laser scanning and topographic surveys, an ideal combination of methods.

The twenty-year and interdisciplinary research activity carried out by virtualgeo has focused on the development of new methods and tools for 3d modeling that go beyond the simple digital-virtual reconstruction of solid modelling, in order to realize three-dimensional informative and photogrammetric representations that faithfully reproduce reality. These so called Advanced 3d models are the basis for carrying out metrological investigations to support the design and the BIM database population. In particular, in this paper we will deal with the segmentation tool, which allows the classification of the photogrammetric 3d model (material, degradation and chronological features). In detail, we will illustrate the collaboration experience between virtualgeo and the University of Trieste, course in Technologies for the conservation and enhancement of architectural heritage of the Master's degree in Architecture. The experience focused on the study of the archaeological site of the Roman river port of Aquileia, which Advanced 3d model was supplied by virtualgeo. Firstly, the work focused on the informative contents necessary for the subsequent elaborations (different types of materials, alteration/degradation forms), starting from the use of coded lexicons (UNI 11182/2006). Subsequently, the quantitative data were associated to each category of homogeneous elements, obtainable from the segmentation ("mapping") of the 3d model. This experience gave the chance to test the EasyCUBE PRO software: it was gradually adapted to the specific needs emerged both during the analysis of the site and the definition of conservation interventions, so as the outputs that can be generated after the elaboration of the Advanced 3d model.

The architectural and sculptural value of the investigated Cultural Heritage has suggested a variety of possible approaches ranging from the traditional modus operandi to the implementation of innovative technology. The conducted research implemented digital and automatic photogrammetry software using Structure from Motion or SFM. These techniques which involve the convergence of different disciplines, such as Computer Vision and photogrammetry seek to generate 3d models, that is the mathematical representation of the investigated 3d objects. The integration of UAS, photogrammetry and TLS develops 3d models able to provide more detailed information. The main purpose of the present research is to test the potentialities offered by the new survey and 3d processing systems in order to carry out historical analyses and investigations in closed environments and for small scale architecture. Starting from the acquired data, the 3d models of the altars allow a 3d comparison between the works object of study and Pozzo's treatise, also allowing speculation about their possible relations, providing extraordinary outcomes from the point of view of survey integrated methodologies and from the point of view of historical and geometric interpretation.

Automatic orientation of image sequences in close range photogrammetry is becoming more and more important, not least to maintain a degree of competitiveness with other survey techniques, such as laser scanning. The objective of this paper is to compare two Structure from Motion (SFM) strategies. The previous strategy has been used at our department for some years already in a wide range of projects and is based on the Harris operator and the fundamental matrix plus the trifocal tensor estimation to filter out the outliers. While it has in most cases performed satisfactorily, the percentage of accepted matches is generally smaller than expected;sometimes this leads to failure of the successful estimation of the trifocal tensor. The second one has only recently been implemented and is still under testing;it is based on the SURF operator and the 5-point relative orientation algorithm. The paper will show a comparison between the two strategies on a series of test cases.
