Historical photographs contain high density of information and are of great importance as sources in humanities research. In addition to the semantic indexing of historical images based on metadata, it is also possible to reconstruct geometric information about the depicted objects or the camera position at the time of the recording by employing photogrammetric methods. The approach presented here is intended to investigate (semi-) automated photogrammetric reconstruction methods for heterogeneous collections of historical (city) photographs and photographic documentation for the use in the humanities, urban research and history sciences. From a photogrammetric point of view, these images are mostly digitized photographs. For a photogrammetric evaluation, therefore, the characteristics of scanned analog images with mostly unknown camera geometry, missing or minimal object information and low radiometric and geometric resolution have to be considered. In addition, these photographs have not been created specifically for documentation purposes and so the focus of these images is often not on the object to be evaluated. The image repositories must therefore be subjected to a preprocessing analysis of their photogrammetric usability. Investigations are carried out on the basis of a repository containing historical images of the Kronentor ('crown gate') of the dresden Zwinger. The initial step was to assess the quality and condition of available images determining their appropriateness for generating three-dimensional point clouds from historical photos using a structure-from-motion evaluation (SfM). Then, the generated point clouds were assessed by comparing them with current measurement data of the same object.

Mining heritage is essential to understand the history, landscape and cultural manifestations linked to mining industry. The Mountain Range of Cartagena-La Unin is one of the most relevant old Mediterranean mining areas, with mining sites that were already exploited before the Carthaginian domination. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2009. Our aim is to document and to enhance its premises, which are currently in a bad state of preservation and have been plundered. The methodology that we suggest combines various techniques, such as laser scanning, LIdAR and digital photogrammetry, in order to obtain the best results based on the characteristics of the objects to be inventoried. For this study, we have chosen an area in which a digital model has been created by means of terrestrial laser scanning and airborne LIdAR, then we have textured it with the images taken. With this model, it is possible to measure the deterioration and displacement suffered by its elements, in particular, the chimney and the boiler room.

This paper illustrates how BIM integration with GIS is approached as part of the workflow in creating virtual Historic dublin. A design for a WEB based interactive 3d model of historic buildings and centres in dublin City (virtual Historic dublin City) paralleling smart city initiates is now under construction and led by the National Monuments at the Office of Public Works in Ireland. The aim is to facilitate the conservation and maintenance of historic infrastructure and fabric and the dissemination of knowledge for education and cultural tourism using an extensive Historic Building Information Model. Remote sensing data is now processed with greater ease to create 3d intelligent models in Historic BIM. While the use of remote sensing, HBIM and game engine platforms are the main applications used at present, 3d GIS has potential to form part of the workflow for developing the virtual Historic City. 2d GIS is now being replaced by 3d spatial data allowing more complex analysis to be carried out, 3d GIS can define and depict buildings, urban rural centres in relation to their geometry topological, semantic and visualisation properties. The addition of semantic attributes allows complex analysis and 3d spatial queries for modelling city and urban elements. This analysis includes fabric and structural elements of buildings, relief, vegetation, transportation, water bodies, city furniture and land use.

The research illustrated in this article aimed at identifying a good standard methodology to survey very narrow spaces during 3d investigation of Cultural Heritage. It is an important topic in today's era of BIM modelling applied to Cultural Heritage. Spaces like staircases, corridors and passages are very common in the architectural or archaeological fields, and obtaining a 3d-oriented survey of those areas can be a very complex task when completeness of the model and high precision are requested. Photogrammetry appears to be the most promising solution in terms of versatility and manoeuvrability also considering the quality of the required data. Fisheye lenses were studied and tested in depth because of their significant advantage in the field of view if compared with rectilinear lenses. This advantage alone can be crucial to reduce the total amount of photos and, as a consequence, to obtain manageable data, to simplify the survey phase and to significantly reduce the elaboration time. In order to overcome the main issue that arise when using fisheye lenses, which is the lack of rules that can be employed to design the survey, a general mathematical formulation to precisely estimate the GSd (Ground Sampling distance) for every optical projection is presented here. A complete survey of a real complex case study was performed in order to test and stress the proposed methodology, and to handle a fisheye-based survey from beginning to end: the photogrammetric survey of the Minguzzi Staircase. It is a complex service spiralstaircase located in the duomo di Milano with a total height of 25 meters and characterized by a narrow walkable space about 70 centimetres wide.

Since 2003, Barcelona charter has highlighted the importance of digital recording of historic ships and maritime heritage in general. despite this has been stressed with emphasis, three dimensional modelling of maritime cultural heritage is still not usual as for archaeology and architecture. Three-dimensional modelling in the maritime heritage needs particular requirements. Objects to be recorded range from small replicas in maritime museums up to full-scale vessels still in operation. High geometric accuracy, photorealism of final model and faithful rendering of salient details are usually needed, together with the classical requisites characterising the 3d modelling-from-reality process, i.e. automation, low cost, reliability and flexibility of the modelling technique. In this paper, a hybrid multi-technique approach is proposed for maritime heritage preservation and, as case study, the 3d modelling of a 3-meter-long scale model of a historic warship, the "Indomito", is presented. The survey is placed in a wider project aiming to realize the virtual maritime museum of Parthenope University of Naples, for making it available to a wider public and also preserving its cultural heritage. Preliminary results are presented and discussed, highlighting relevant aspects that emerged during the experiment.

Conservation of Cultural Heritage is a key issue and structural changes and damages can influence the mechanical behaviour of artefacts and buildings. The use of Finite Elements Methods (FEM) for mechanical analysis is largely used in modelling stress behaviour. The typical workflow involves the use of CAd 3d models made by Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS) surfaces, representing the ideal shape of the object to be simulated. Nowadays, 3d documentation of CH has been widely developed through reality-based approaches, but the models are not suitable for a direct use in FEA: the mesh has in fact to be converted to volumetric, and the density has to be reduced since the computational complexity of a FEA grows exponentially with the number of nodes. The focus of this paper is to present a new method aiming at generate the most accurate 3d representation of a real artefact from highly accurate 3d digital models derived from reality-based techniques, maintaining the accuracy of the high-resolution polygonal models in the solid ones. The approach proposed is based on a wise use of retopology procedures and a transformation of this model to a mathematical one made by NURBS surfaces suitable for being processed by volumetric meshers typically embedded in standard FEM packages. The strong simplification with little loss of consistency possible with the retopology step is used for maintaining as much coherence as possible between the original acquired mesh and the simplified model, creating in the meantime a topology that is more favourable for the automatic NURBS conversion.

As the 3d laser scanning and photogrammetry technologies continue to mature, more and more applications founded in numerous areas. The realistic 3d models are mainly adopted for digital display uses, such as the 3d game, web showcases, head-mounted display, etc. While we are enjoying the vivid digital sceneries through different kinds of digital display screens, there are still challenges exist for the 3d printing application, especially for large size objects. In this article, we will present an approach on digitizing and 3d replicating large grottoes. Unlike 3d rendering, 3d printing requires high detailed shape data for the fabrication. Such demands cause many technical difficulties including huge data amount, accurate dense point cloud, high-resolution texture mapping. We chose cascade SfM, grouped MVS, automatic texture mapping to prepare the high definition colored 3d model for printing and painting references. Meanwhile, we optimized 3d printing procedure as well as post-processing, installation, lacquer and painting. Two replicas of 10-meter sized grottoes have been manufactured after four years of efforts, which have earned some appreciations from audiences.

The essay deals with the themes of digital representation of architecture starting from several years of teaching activity which is growing within the course of Automatic design of the degree course in Engineering/Architecture in the University of Trento. With the development of CAd systems, architectural representation lies less in the tracking of a simple graph and drawn deeper into a series of acts of building a complex digital model, which can be used as a data base on which to report all the stages of project and interpretation work, and from which to derive final drawings and documents. The advent of digital technology has led to increasing difficulty in finding explicit connections between one type of operation and the subsequent outcome;thereby increasing need for guidelines, the need to understand in order to precede the changes, the desire not to be overwhelmed by uncontrollable influences brought by technological hardware and software systems to use only in accordance with the principle of maximum productivity. Formation occupies a crucial role because has the ability to direct the profession toward a thoughtful and selective use of specific applications;teaching must build logical routes in the fluid world of info-graphics and the only way to do so is to describe its contours through method indications: this will consist in understanding, studying and divulging what in its mobility does not change, as procedural issues, rather than what is transitory in its fixity, as manual questions.

Matera citta Narrata is a project coordinated by CNR ITABC and financed by the Agency of Tourist Promotion of Basilicata region, aimed to the creation of a digital platform able to support the public before and during the visit of Matera (World Heritage since 1993), providing cultural contents by multiple communicative formats and access possibilities. The main components of the project are: 1) the web site, accessible in remote and adapted also from smartphone, 2) cultural contents and applications for mobile devices (old style mobile phone, smartphone, iPad) with different operative systems. Every user can reach cultural contents in a simple way, choosing the communicative format he prefers and supported by the technology he owns. The access is totally free for public. In this paper we'll describe, more in detail, the application developed for iPad.

In these last years have been calculated several general algorithms to process the images acquired by mobile devices. Nevertheless, they don't always work at their full effectiveness due the numerous constraints and external issues. The latest generation smartphones, pushed by higher user expectations, have increasingly performing camera functions, in particular way, about the always increasing resolution, with a large number of pixels to process or two cameras for stereo view. Considering that pixels in an image sensor synthetizes the number of incoming photons, taking a photograph with a digital camera means to applying a low-pass filter to a scene where the tiny textures, such as characters that measure a few pixels, are observed blurry. This happens when using digital zoom or when the visibility is compromised or during the night artificial lights. For all these reasons the conventional image converter resolution algorithms (as bilinear interpolation algorithm) don't work with the high-frequency information of a scene once lost. All these aspects are more relevant if we are taking photos to carry out a 3d scenario. Indeed, the 3d model will have an higher geometric accuracy if the image resolution will be higher. Super-Resolution algorithms (SRa) are classified into two categories: (1) approaches that reconstruct a high-resolution image from itself and (2) approaches that register multiple low-resolution images to interpolate sub-pixel information. In this paper we verify the geometric accuracy of a 3d model, when using the Morpho Super-ResolutionT algorithm, also in critical condition. This algorithm doesn't require pixel shift, indeed, some cameras have a functionality named pixel shift, which captures multiple images while shifting the image sensor. [GRAPHICS] .
