There are no specifications and/or standards for the restoration of collapsed masses of rocks, as in most cases the rocks bear no historical/archaeological value and their restoration would require significant budget and resources. But plenty of colossal statues, ancient temples, tombs and whole cities are carved on the surface or even expand in the interior of solid natural rocks. These so-called rock-cut monuments are located all around the globe and, in most cases, are made on a grand scale. Earthquakes, rock's faults, erosion and karst can lead to massive rock collapses. The purpose of this paper is to establish an integrated methodology for the relocation of detached rock segments to their original positions. Specifically, the proposed methodology is based on the case of the Areopagus Hill and involves the generation of 3d models of the rock segments, their virtual reassembly and their utilization for the reconstruction of a part of the peak of the hill.

Improving accessibility to Cultural Heritage (CH) is an increasingly urgent challenge today. It is not only a matter of physical inaccessibility but also temporal, considering that part of CH now lost. Fortunately, the most modern technological tools are helping to break down both space and time barriers. In facts, recent advances in representation, 3d modelling and survey methodologies opened new scenarios for valorization and conservation of CH. In particular, the improvement of quality in resolution and sensor sensitivity of cameras allowed to achieve the right level of 3d reconstruction through digital photogrammetry procedures. In the same field, terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) allowed acquiring dense point clouds of complex environments with a millimetric level of accuracy. At the same time, the application of Augmented Reality (AR) and virtual Reality (VR) technologies is an excellent solution for improving the accessibility to monuments, museums and archaeological sites. It is possible to share new levels of information about CH, in space and time, for touristic, managerial and scientific aims. This work is focused on the virtualization of CH, considering the study case of the fountain of Wignacourt, today present in St. Philip Garden in Floriana and initially located in Valletta (Malta). The application presented allows the virtual fruition of the monument placed in its original location, St. George Square. A simplified plant of the square will enable tourists to make a temporal journey in the past with their mobile device. The work is part of the Interreg Italia-Malta European project named I-Access, dedicated to the improvement of CH accessibility. It focuses the attention to the experimentation of new specific procedures in Geomatics necessary to solve big data issues of complex environment visualization.

Holography is often considered as the most promising 3d visualization technique, creating virtual images indistinguishable from the real ones. However, one the main barrier to the adoption of holographic displays in wide 3d viewing systems is the very large amount of information contained in a hologram. Indeed, a hologram with a large size and wide viewing angle contains terabytes of data, urging the need for holographic data coding algorithms. In this paper, we propose a data coding algorithm suitable to the compression of holograms containing several billions of pixels. In our proposed approach, each holographic frame is subdivided into pixel blocks which are 2d Fourier transformed. The pixels thus obtained are rearranged to form new complex-valued segments whose amplitudes have characteristics close to orthographic projection images. These segments are ordered in sequence and their real and imaginary parts are encoded using the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Main 4:4:4 coding profile with 4:0:0 chroma sampling.

Creating relightable and animatable human characters from monocular video at a low cost is a critical task for digital human modeling and virtual reality applications. This task is complex due to intricate articulation motion, a wide range of ambient lighting conditions, and pose-dependent clothing deformations. In this paper, we introduce a novel self-supervised framework that takes a monocular video of a moving human as input and generates a 3d neural representation capable of being rendered with novel poses under arbitrary lighting conditions. Our framework decomposes dynamic humans under varying illumination into neural fields in canonical space, taking into account geometry and spatially varying BRdF material properties. Additionally, we introduce pose-driven deformation fields, enabling bidirectional mapping between canonical space and observation. Leveraging the proposed appearance decomposition and deformation fields, our framework learns in a self-supervised manner. Ultimately, based on pose-driven deformation, recovered appearance, and physically-based rendering, the reconstructed human figure becomes relightable and can be explicitly driven by novel poses. We demonstrate significant performance improvements over previous works and provide compelling examples of relighting from monocular videos of moving humans in challenging, uncontrolled capture scenarios.

3d shape representations that accommodate learning-based 3d reconstruction are an open problem in machine learning and computer graphics. Previous work on neural 3d reconstruction demonstrated benefits, but also limitations, of point cloud, voxel, surface mesh, and implicit function representations. We introduce deformable Tetrahedral Meshes (dEFTET) as a particular parameterization that utilizes volumetric tetrahedral meshes for the reconstruction problem. Unlike existing volumetric approaches, dEFTET optimizes for both vertex placement and occupancy, and is differentiable with respect to standard 3d reconstruction loss functions. It is thus simultaneously high-precision, volumetric, and amenable to learning-based neural architectures. We show that it can represent arbitrary, complex topology, is both memory and computationally efficient, and can produce high-fidelity reconstructions with a significantly smaller grid size than alternative volumetric approaches. The predicted surfaces are also inherently defined as tetrahedral meshes, thus do not require post-processing. We demonstrate that dEFTET matches or exceeds both the quality of the previous best approaches and the performance of the fastest ones. Our approach obtains high-quality tetrahedral meshes computed directly from noisy point clouds, and is the first to showcase high-quality 3d tet-mesh results using only a single image as input. Ocean-bottom seismic acquisition is attractive in the exploration of complex deep-water environments due to its source-receiver decoupling, which makes it possible to get a wide-azimuth coverage and long source-receiver distance to significantly improve the illumination at depth. However, such acquisition systems also provide information on the elastic properties of the subsurface by recording the displacement on the seabed with 3C geophones. This information is mostly overlooked up to now, while reconstructing jointly P-wave and S-wave velocity models would significantly improve the subsurface characterization. Achieving such a high-resolution multi-parameter reconstruction requires the design of an efficient 3d fluid-solid coupled inversion engine. The purpose of this study is to present such a tool, based on an acoustic-elastic coupled wave-equation system and a spectral-element discretization in space. The method is illustrated on a bilayered 2d model and a 3d extended Marmousi model, to show how P-wave and S-wave velocity models can be inferred from the data, and the resolution improvement obtained from the reconstruction of the S-wave velocity model. due to its simplicity, adaptability, and applicability to various grid formats, the restriction-smoothed basis multiscale method (MsRSB) (Møyne and Lie 2016) has received wide attention and has been extended to various flow problems in porous media. Unlike the standard multiscale methods, MsRSB relies on iterative smoothing to find the multiscale basis functions in an adaptive manner, giving it the ability to naturally adjust to various complex grid orientations often encountered in real-life industrial applications. In this work, we investigate the scalability of MsRSB on various state-of-the-art parallel architectures, including multi-core systems and GPUs. While MsRSB is — like most other multiscale methods — directly amenable to parallelization, the dependence on a smoother to find the basis functions creates unique control- and data-flow patterns. These patterns require careful design and implementation in parallel environments to achieve good scalability. We extend the work on parallel multiscale methods in Manea et al. (2016) and Manea and Almani (2019) to map the MsRSB special kernels to the shared-memory parallel multi-core and GPU architectures. The scalability of our optimized parallel MsRSB implementation is demonstrated using highly heterogeneous 3d problems derived from the SPE10 Benchmark (Christie and Blunt 2001). Those problems range in size from millions to tens of millions of cells. The multi-core implementation is benchmarked on a shared memory multi-core architecture consisting of two packages of Intel's Cascade Lake Xeon® Gold 6246 CPU, while the GPU implementation is benchmarked on a massively parallel architecture consisting of Nvidia Volta V100 GPUs. We compare the multi-core implementation to the GPU implementation for both the setup and solution stages. As one of the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), laparoscopy is widely applied in gastrointestinal surgery. Benefits from its minimally invasive procedure and fast postoperative rehabilitation for patients. However, it is a huge challenge for surgeons to operate slender surgical instruments under a limited field of view taken by laparoscopy which requires the surgeon to have rich surgical experience. In laparoscopic surgeries, an accurate 3d reconstruction mode with internal anatomy structure and laparoscopic positions in the abdominal cavity can effectively help the surgeon to reduce the dependence on surgical experience. In addition, reconstructing the structure of the surgical scene is also a key step for data registration in surgical navigation and augmented reality surgery. In this paper, a novel Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) method based on feature patch tracking by Kernel Correlation Filter (KCF) is proposed for 3d dense point clouds reconstruction, which is called KCF-SLAM. It reconstructs the laparoscopic surgery scene accurately and densely under stereo laparoscopic conditions. The proposed method is validated on a public in-vivo data set captured by a stereo laparoscope. Compared with the feature-based SLAM, the proposed method can work efficiently when the image texture is missing or insignificant. The results suggest that the proposed method can reconstruct the dense point cloud of laparoscopic scene stably and accurately. © 2020 IEEE.

Automatic semantic segmentation of images is becoming a very prominent research field with many promising and reliable solutions already available. Labelled images as input for the photogrammetric pipeline have enormous potential to improve the 3d reconstruction results. To support this argument, in this work we discuss the contribution of image semantic labelling towards image-based 3d reconstruction in photogrammetry. We experiment semantic information in various steps starting from feature matching to dense 3d reconstruction. Labelling in 2d is considered as an easier task in terms of data availability and algorithm maturity. However, since semantic labelling of all the images involved in the reconstruction may be a costly, laborious and time consuming task, we propose to use a deep learning architecture to automatically generate semantically segmented images. To this end, we have trained a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) on historic building facade images that will be further enriched in the future. The first results of this study are promising, with an improved performance on the quality of the 3d reconstruction and the possibility to transfer the labelling results from 2d to 3d. [GRAPHICS] .

The aim of this research is to define a method, able to analyse the systems of illumination in the medieval period, through a 3d virtual model reconstruction. It specifically needs to deepen the interactions between natural and artificial illumination in confined spaces. The study describes and examines the best survey technique to obtain a 3d model reconstruction, according to the achievement of such lighting scenarios, and the most suitable tools for lighting analysis. Thus, it is possible to carry out accurate interpretations of the past starting from historical sources and scientific data about lighting. This method was validated on a case study of a rupestrian church in Matera. The rupestrian contexts are less investigated in relation to mediaeval artificial lighting even if there are recognitions and comparative studies of widespread contexts, not only in Puglia and Basilicata, but also in Mediterranean area (e.g. in Cappadocia and Cyprus) which allow identifying evidences related to artificial lighting systems. The architectural signs (hole, niches, etc.) for ancient luminaries can be studied in 3d and lighting prospective. Lastly, the virtual model of the rupestrian church was imported into an open-source visualisation software (3d Heritage Online Presenter) to be appreciable on line and to promote historical heritage knowledge.
