Augmented Reality (AR) represents a growing communication channel, responding to the need to expand reality with additional information, offering easy and engaging access to digital data. AR for architectural representation allows a simple interaction with 3d models, facilitating spatial understanding of complex volumes and topological relationships between parts, overcoming some limitations related to virtual Reality. In the last decade different developments in the pipeline process have seen a significant advancement in technological and algorithmic aspects, paying less attention to 3d modeling generation. For this, the article explores the construction of basic geometries for 3d model's generation, highlighting the relationship between geometry and topology, basic for a consistent normal distribution. Moreover, a critical evaluation about corrective paths of existing 3d models is presented, analysing a complex architectural case study, the virtual model of Villa del Verginese, an emblematic example for topological emerged problems. The final aim of the paper is to refocus attention on 3d model construction, suggesting some "good practices" useful for preventing, minimizing or correcting topological problems, extending the accessibility of AR to people engaged in architectural representation.

Cultural heritage includes several cases of missing architectural element or entire buildings, due to destruction, replacement or radical changes caused over time by other structures. The investigation of these lost elements aimed at their virtualreconstruction, for both scientific and cultural-leisure applications, is therefore a topic of great interest. To this purpose, methodologies for surveying and photogrammetric processing provide a very powerful tool, extracting descriptive and geometric information, both 2-and3-d, using diverse archive images. This paper presents the issues related to the use of archive images in photogrammetry, pointing out the need for an integrated approach to operations of virtualreconstruction of lost volumes. This approach provides a multidisciplinary effort, in order to evaluate all iconographic sources, of which images processed by geomatics techniques are a component. The paper also presents the early results of a reconstruction project of the Palazzo di Cosimo de' Medici, in the Fortezza Vecchia site (Livorno, Italy), heavily damaged by World War II bombings and subsequently razed.

The article aimed to provide a sort of new education process including virtual reality based application. At present, in accordance with the established ways of archaeological research, archaeologists are forced to transfer the found samples for long-term storage. In such notation, there is a challenging issue to create a virtual museum with deepening experience user interaction. The modern approaches of the virtual reality were implemented by applying technologies such as the Unreal Engine (UE) and Leap Motion (LM). In the paper, we give the scheme of the implementeddevelopment workflow. The ability of interaction with objects using the interface and hand gestures on LM on UE was given.
Additive manufacturing (AM) provides design flexibility and allows rapid fabrications of parts with complex geometries. The presence of internal defects, however, can lead to deficit performance of the fabricated part...

This paper presents part of the results of a larger research project that focused on the surveying anddocumenting of Roman theatres and amphitheatres in the Campania region as well as the testing of a virtual fruition system for the digital reconstruction of a case study: the Roman theatre of Benevento. The work was carried out by the research group at the Interdepartmental Urban/Eco Research Centre of the University of Naples Federico II in collaboration with Spinvector, a company specialized in ICT - Information and Communication Technology - which lead to the defining of a fruition system of Cultural Heritage applied to archaeological heritage. The project included3ddigital surveys of the study samples carried out using reality-based techniques, which allowed for the acquisition of metric, morphological, geometric and colorimetric data. This made it possible to elaborate three-dimensional models, based on the current configuration of the places as well as of the possible original reconfigurations.

This study presents an integrated approach for reading coastal sites. A process aimed at protecting and enhancing these sites must be developed alongside a targeted interdisciplinary strategy, closely linked to the fields of archaeology, survey, landscape reading, morphology of the territory and geology. These must no longer be managed as individual cognitive elements, but within a single comprehensive analytical interpretation model. The experiment activity carried out along the rocky area of Aci Castello, on the eastern coast of Sicily, was developed using a methodological approach based on the integration of 3ddata coming from various survey technologies -3d laser scanning, mobile mapping and echo sounder systems. The aim of the experiment was to create a complete three-dimensional model of the studied area, focused on obtaining a dynamic understanding, that is punctual and comprehensive, of the site's value and fragility.

There are many healthcare facilities in Spain that were built throughout the second half of the 20th century, and compose an interesting built heritage designed by outstanding architects of the architectural avant-garde. Some of them were included in the dOCOMOMO's list of buildings to be preserved anddocumented. As a consequence, every intervention on the hospitals' heritage requires a special attention and needs a deep knowledge of the building in advance of taking action. On the other hand, such a particular heritage is being continuously updated according to the new standards that derive from the current tendencies in hospital design, and also from advances in healing techniques. In this context, 3d Modelling andvirtual reality should have a decisive impact on the way hospitals' complex spaces are designed, as they become useful tools for describing the previous stages of the buildings, as well as the impacts of new proposals. They can even change our experience of the built environment. As a step forward, we are developing a methodology to be applied to hospital design where these tools, together with BIM models -and in the near future, high-end immersive VR systems-play an important role.

This work presents a system which allows image data and extracted features from a real-world location to be captured and modelled in a virtual Reality (VR) environment combined with Augmented Situatedvisualizations (ASV) overlaid and registered in a virtual environment. Combining these technologies with techniques from data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI)(such as image analysis and3dreconstruction) allows the creation of a setting where remote locations can be modelled and interacted with from anywhere in the world. This Enhanced Photorealistic Immersive (EPI) system is highly adaptable to a wide range of use cases and users as it can be utilized to model and interact with any environment which can be captured as image data (such as training for operation in hazardous environments, accessibility solutions for exploration of historical/tourism locations and collaborative learning environments). A use case example focused on a structural examination of railway tunnels along with a pilot study is presented, which can demonstrate the usefulness of the EPI system.

Sensor acquireddata from inertial measurement unit based motion capture systems often do not conform to human body kinematics. Although the data may appear visually correct when reconstructed on a stick model or 3d avatar, it does not represent natural movement when visualized on 3ddata analytical tools, such as Motion-sphere. This work extends the Motion-Sphere human motion data visualization and analysis tool to edit sensor acquired human motion data (SHMd) to strictly adhere to human body kinematics. We use knee and elbow joint movements from the range of motion data in the TotalCapture dataset to compare SHMd against edited human motion data. This work proposes a method to edit SHMd using Motion Sphere for kinematic correctness. We verify that edited human motion data is admissible to human body kinematics and improves virtualreconstruction on 3d avatar and joint position estimation accuracy. Our results highlight the requirement for data visualization and editing tools, such as Motion-sphere to edit and clean SHMd.
