This paper presents the most recent developments in a project aimed to the documentation, storage and dissemination of the cultural heritage. The subject of the project are more than 70 Baroque atria in Turin, recognized by critics for their particular unitary vaulted systems Our research team is currently working on digitizing documents and studying ways to enhance and share these results through ICT. In particular, we want to explore possibilities for recognizing and tracing three-dimensional objects in augmented reality (AR) applications connected to the collected data. Recent developments in this field relate to the technology available on widespread mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, allowing for real-time 3d scanning. Using software prototypes, we want to introduce some problems involved in integrating this technology into digital archives.

The following research aims to exploit the low-cost technologies, for the survey and mapping of historical archaeology in the Roman context. The main purposes of the research is to implement a large-scale survey campaign to understand the geometry and the materiality of the artefacts examined. Three-dimensional survey from photography, allows an immediate mapping of the materiality, of the degradation and of the architectural elements characteristic of the architecture in question. From the model it is possible to obtain an image that is faithful to the reality that can be the basis for developments in many disciplines such as, for example, in the restoration project, for the material analysis and the mapping of the degradation. The applications for this type of mapping are numerous, one of those proposed in this research concerns the virtual musealisation of historical artifacts. More and more in recent years, museums are exploiting the capabilities of three-dimensional modeling software of architectural elements to interactively convey architectural elements. A methodology of work that in recent archaeological excavations is not based solely on the didactic divulgation of the history of a place, but during the excavation phase on the mapping and cataloging of uncovered finds.

In 2010 an Italian team started new on-field investigations in the area of the Sun Temple of Niuserra, 6 km south of the pyramids of Giza. The archaeological research was planned to re-examine the monument after its discovery in 1898. The work was mainly aimed at a general evaluation of the archaeological structures, still visible, in order to establish an updated plan of the temple. More than 100 scans and several 3d models by close-range photogrammetry have been acquired, processed and integrated to virtually reconstruct the archaeological area. To manage all available 3d datasets, allowing to propose new hypothesis about the monument, a BIM has been developed. Thanks to this approach different categories of environmental and technological objects have been created and analysed. The paper deals with the recent achievements, especially regarding the hierarchical conceptualisation of the architectural components. In particular, the contribution dwells on the analysis of the monument starting from the identification of a parametric library built on the semantic decomposition of the 3d replica.

As the 3d laser scanning and photogrammetry technologies continue to mature, more and more applications founded in numerous areas. The realistic 3d models are mainly adopted for digital display uses, such as the 3d game, web showcases, head-mounted display, etc. While we are enjoying the vivid digital sceneries through different kinds of digital display screens, there are still challenges exist for the 3d printing application, especially for large size objects. In this article, we will present an approach on digitizing and 3d replicating large grottoes. Unlike 3d rendering, 3d printing requires high detailed shape data for the fabrication. Such demands cause many technical difficulties including huge data amount, accurate dense point cloud, high-resolution texture mapping. We chose cascade SfM, grouped MVS, automatic texture mapping to prepare the high definition colored 3d model for printing and painting references. Meanwhile, we optimized 3d printing procedure as well as post-processing, installation, lacquer and painting. Two replicas of 10-meter sized grottoes have been manufactured after four years of efforts, which have earned some appreciations from audiences.

This paper illustrates how BIM integration with GIS is approached as part of the workflow in creating virtual Historic dublin. A design for a WEB based interactive 3d model of historic buildings and centres in dublin City (virtual Historic dublin City) paralleling smart city initiates is now under construction and led by the National Monuments at the Office of Public Works in Ireland. The aim is to facilitate the conservation and maintenance of historic infrastructure and fabric and the dissemination of knowledge for education and cultural tourism using an extensive Historic Building Information Model. Remote sensing data is now processed with greater ease to create 3d intelligent models in Historic BIM. While the use of remote sensing, HBIM and game engine platforms are the main applications used at present, 3d GIS has potential to form part of the workflow for developing the virtual Historic City. 2d GIS is now being replaced by 3d spatial data allowing more complex analysis to be carried out, 3d GIS can define and depict buildings, urban rural centres in relation to their geometry topological, semantic and visualisation properties. The addition of semantic attributes allows complex analysis and 3d spatial queries for modelling city and urban elements. This analysis includes fabric and structural elements of buildings, relief, vegetation, transportation, water bodies, city furniture and land use.

Estimating 3d hand meshes from RGB images robustly is a highly desirable task, made challenging due to the numerous degrees of freedom, and issues such as self-similarity and occlusions. Previous methods generally either use parametric 3d hand models or follow a model-free approach. While the former can be considered more robust, e.g. to occlusions, they are less expressive. We propose a hybrid approach, utilizing a deep neural network and differential rendering based optimization to demonstrably achieve the best of both worlds. In addition, we explore virtual Reality (VR) as an application. Most VR headsets are nowadays equipped with multiple cameras, which we can leverage by extending our method to the egocentric stereo domain. This extension proves to be more resilient to the above mentioned issues. Finally, as a use-case, we show that the improved image-model alignment can be used to acquire the user’s hand texture, which leads to a more realistic virtual hand representation.

Google Street View is a technology implemented in several Google services/applications (e.g. Google Maps, Google Earth) which provides the user, interested in viewing a particular location on the map, with panoramic images (represented in equi-rectangular projection) at street level. Generally, consecutive panoramas are acquired with an average distance of 5-10 m and can be compared to a traditional photogrammetric strip and, thus, processed to reconstruct portion of city at nearly zero cost. Most of the photogrammetric software packages available today implement spherical camera models and can directly process images in equi-rectangular projection. Although many authors provided in the past relevant works that involved the use of Google Street View imagery, mainly for 3d city model reconstruction, very few references can be found about the actual accuracy that can be obtained with such data. The goal of the present work is to present preliminary tests (at time of writing just three case studies has been analysed) about the accuracy and reliability of the 3d models obtained from Google Street View panoramas.

during the last decade, 3d integrated surveys and BIM modelling procedures have greatly improved the overall knowledge on some Brazilian Modernist buildings. In this framework, the Casa de Vidro 3d survey carried out by dIAPReM centre at Ferrara University, beside the important outputs, analysis and researches achieved from the point cloud database processing, was also useful to test several awareness increasing activities in cooperation with local stakeholders. The first digital documentation test of the Casa de Vidro allowed verifying the feasibility of a full survey on the building towards the restoration and possible placement of new architectures into the garden as an archive-museum of the Lina Bo and P.M. Bardi Foundation. Later, full 3d integrated survey and diagnostic analysis were carried out to achieve the total digital documentation of the house sponsored by the Keeping it Modern initiative of Getty Foundation (Los Angeles). Following its characteristics, the survey had to take into consideration the different architectural features, up to the relationship of architecture and nature. These 3d documentation activities and the point cloud processing allowed several analysis in a multidisciplinary framework.

Fast but precise 3d reconstructions of cultural heritage scenes are becoming very requested in the archaeology and architecture. While modern multi-image 3d reconstruction approaches provide impressive results in terms of textured surface models, it is often the need to create a 3d model for which only a single photo (or few sparse) is available. This paper focuses on the single photo 3d reconstruction problem for lost cultural objects for which only a few images are remaining. We use image-to-voxel translation network (Z-GAN) as a starting point. Z-GAN network utilizes the skip connections in the generator network to transfer 2d features to a 3d voxel model effectively (Figure 1). Therefore, the network can generate voxel models of previously unseen objects using object silhouettes present on the input image and the knowledge obtained during a training stage. In order to train our Z-GAN network, we created a large dataset that includes aligned sets of images and corresponding voxel models of an ancient Greek temple. We evaluated the Z-GAN network for single photo reconstruction on complex structures like temples as well as on lost heritage still available in crowdsourced images. Comparison of the reconstruction results with state-of-the-art methods are also presented and commented.
