In recent decades many Geomatics-based methods have been created to reconstruct and visualize objects, and these include digital photogrammetry, Lidar, remote sensing and hybrid techniques. The methods used to process such data are the result of research straddling the fields of Geomatics and Computer Vision, and employ techniques arising from approaches of analytical, geometric and statistical nature. One of the most fascinating fields of application concerns Architecture, which, moreover, has always depended on Mathematics generally and, more specifically, on Geometry. Throughout history the link between Geometry and Architecture has been strong and while architects have used mathematics to construct their buildings, geometry has always been the essential tool allowing them to choose spatial shapes which are aesthetically appropriate. Historically, mathematics and philosophy have been interrelated;many philosophers of the past were also mathematicians. The link between Philosophy and Architecture is twofold: on the one hand, philosophers have discussed what architecture is, on the other, philosophy has contributed to the development of architecture. We will deal with the ties between Architecture, Geometry and Philosophy over the centuries. Although there are artistic suggestions that go beyond time and space, and there are genial precursors, we can identify, in principle, some epochs: the ancient era, the modern era, and fmally the contemporary epoch, from the crisis of positivistic sciences to globalisation.

3d immersive visualization of micro-computed tomography and XRd texture datasets

Advancements in computer technology have enabled three-dimensional (3d) reconstruction, data-stitching, and manipulation of 3d data obtained on X-ray imaging systems such as micro-computed tomography (mu-CT). Likewise, intuitive evaluation of these 3d datasets can be enhanced by recent advances in virtual reality (VR) hardware and software. Additionally, the generation, viewing, and manipulation of 3d X-ray diffraction datasets, such as pole figures employed for texture analysis, can also benefit from these advanced visualization techniques. We present newly-developed protocols for porting 3d data (as TIFF-stacks) into a Unity gaming software platform so that data may be toured, manipulated, and evaluated within a more-intuitive VR environment through the use of game-like controls and 3d headsets. We demonstrate this capability by rendering mu-CT data of a polymer dogbone test bar at various stages of in situ mechanical strain. An additional experiment is presented showing 3d XRd data collected on an aluminum test block with vias. These 3d XRd data for texture analysis (chi, phi, 2 theta dimensions) enables the viewer to visually inspect 3d pole figures and detect the presence or absence of in-plane residual macrostrain. These two examples serve to illustrate the benefits of this new methodology for multidimensional analysis.

In order to reduce operational risks and to improve the risk management and control level in substation, a substation operation safety monitoring and management system (3d2S2M) has been structured based on three-dimensional (3d) laser modeling technology. In this paper, we introduce how to build such a system and to describe its implementation details. A 3d lidar scanning technology is used to perform a holographic scan of the whole internal area in a substation to obtain color point cloud data of buildings and all equipment. Then, a novel 3d visualization safety monitoring and management system, named 3d2S2M, is developed by performing a 3d reconstruction of the point cloud data. Based on the real 3d scene model of 3d2S2M, the method of 3d distance measurement is used to replace manual on-site investigation for improving operation and maintenance efficiency. In addition, a real-time high-accuracy localization method is proposed, in order to identify and analyze the positioning and the behavior of the personnel, and the movement trajectory of the equipment. By combining positioning information and the electronic fence that used in 3d2S2M, risk levels of the personnel (or equipment) are evaluated and the corresponding alarm is issued to prevent dangerous behavior, thereby the operation risk is reduced in substation. © 2020 The authors and IOS Press.

As the urbanization process continues to deepen, the scale of construction projects is getting larger, and the different involved fields are more complicated. The construction industry is also facing a severe test while it is developing rapidly. As the most sought-after application technology in the area of engineering construction, BIM is receiving more and more attention and practice. Today, the application of BIM technology in architecture has matured, but the application in landscape design is still in the exploration stage. BIM technology mainly emphasizes the complete life cycle of planning, design, construction, completion operation, and demolition and update, the construction information of each stage is built into 3d virtual through the structure of 3d information model. Utilize BIM's information model to enable data to be shared and serve as a platform for collaboration among professional consultants to effectively control engineering costs, schedule engineering, reduce cost of waste due to design or construction errors, and improve construction quality. The construction information can be extended to the property management stage after completion. BIM can effectively solve the traditional engineering interface complex and harmonized 2d diagram which is difficult to clearly state the 3d space, the information of each stage of the construction life cycle is difficult to transmit and other shortcomings effectively. This paper will try to analyze the application prospect of BIM technology in landscape design from several aspects. Through the case study of "Yangyou Village River Ecological Landscape reconstruction design Project," BIM has significantly provided the benefits for more scientific design and application.

The three-dimensional (3d) documentation and surveying of cultural heritage can be carried out following several geomatics techniques such as laser scanning and thermography in order to detect the original 3d shape after applying reverse engineering solutions. In almost all cases, the integration of data collected by different instruments is needed to achieve a successful and comprehensive 3d model of the as-built architectural shape of the historical building. This paper describes the operations carried out by the authors to determine the as-built 3d model of the Escuelas Pias Church, related namely to the dome and circular nave. After the description of the church and historical notes, attention will be driven to the indirect registration results obtained with three different laser scanning software packages, highlighting similarities and differences, and the consequences while generating meshes. The 3d model carried out will then be described and the results of some investigations with regard to the hypotheses about the design of the dome and the origin of the alterations will be presented.

despite the consistent development of approaches aimed at the virtual reconstruction of whole houses or archaeological monuments, the variety of technologies involved in virtual reconstruction procedures and the complexity of a rigorous process to provide validation models, seems to limit a univocal and shared standards adoption. For example, compared to the large number of contributions on the virtual reconstruction of whole architectures or cultural heritage sites, only a few works have proposed a rigorous workflow specific to mosaics and ancient floors and to their virtual reconstruction. The goal of this work is to present the first results on the virtual reconstruction of the "Temple of Isis" in Marsala (Italy);in particular, the work is aimed at the virtual reconstruction of the mosaic and the opus spicatum floor still preserved in situ. A close-range photogrammetric survey was carried out in order to provide a detailed floors 3d reconstruction;a structure-from-motion photogrammetry approach was employed to obtain a detailed 2d and 3d documentation with millimetric accuracy and high level of colour fidelity. Thanks to the photogrammetric products, accurate virtual restoration/reconstruction of the whole floor surfaces was conducted in a rigorous way and as close as possible to the historical reality.

Under the framework of the modern theory of restoration, this paper shows the experimental results obtained during the structural diagnosis of one of the most important master gates inside the military modern complex of Almeida in Portugal: the inner master gate of Saint Antonio. This master gate was conceived with the aim of supporting the siege of an early modern army, using to this end a masonry framework filled by a natural soil able to absorb the impacts. However, this infill is promoting the disaggregation of the masonry and thus the reduction of its bearing capacity. In order to evaluate the current and future structural behaviour, it is proposed a method able to combine the terrestrial laser scanner with the limit analysis for masonry constructions. The results obtained by this combination shows that the major barrel vault has, in its current conservation state, enough bearing capacity to support an agglomeration of people. However, it is recommended a material restitution in order to recover the contact are between masonry blocks as well as to recover the architectural interpretation of the element.

We present a novel framework for mesh reconstruction from unstructured point clouds by taking advantage of the learned visibility of the 3d points in the virtual views and traditional graph-cut based mesh generation. Specifically, we first propose a three-step network that explicitly employs depth completion for visibility prediction. Then the visibility information of multiple views is aggregated to generate a 3d mesh model by solving an optimization problem considering visibility in which a novel adaptive visibility weighting in surface determination is also introduced to suppress line of sight with a large incident angle. Compared to other learning-based approaches, our pipeline only exercises the learning on a 2d binary classification task, i.e., points visible or not in a view, which is much more generalizable and practically more efficient and capable to deal with a large number of points. Experiments demonstrate that our method with favorable transferability and robustness, and achieve competing performances w.r.t. state-of-the-art learning-based approaches on small complex objects and outperforms on large indoor and outdoor scenes. In the second half of the 19th and early 20th century, sheep shepherds have built dry-stone shelters all over the Slovene Kras (or Karst) region. despite being made out of stones that are interlocked without the use of any binding material, many of these vernacular constructions survived - even though sometimes only partially - the ravages of time. The fact that over one hundred fifty shepherd shelters are currently known is mainly due to the craftsmanship of their builders and thanks to (and even despite) their present location. A majority of these stone constructions can be found in areas that are nowadays forested, thus shielding them from weather-related or anthropogenic damage (because they are difficult to spot). This paper reports on the geometric documentation of those shelters using a photogrammetric computer vision pipeline, thereby mainly focussing on the difficulties that were encountered during this process. However, such image-based modelling approaches merely yield digital three-dimensional (3d) approximations of the shelters' surface geometry (along with some sub-optimal colour data). Although these 3d surface models might be suitable to digitally preserve vulnerable vernacular buildings to some extent, they do not magically advance our understanding of them. The second part of this article focuses, therefore, on the extraction of archaeological information from these digital 3d constructions. More specifically, the total amount of stones, the total building time and the building cost regarding caloric energy expenditure are estimated for each of the digitised shelters. Although this assessment of architectural energetics provided useful insight into the building efforts and nutrient uptake of the shepherds, it also revealed many assumptions and shortcomings that often characterise archaeological information extraction from digital 3d models of buildings.

NURBS, B-Splines, and Bézier curves have a wide range of applications. One of them is software visualization, where these kinds of splines are often used to depict relations between objects in a visually appealing manner. For example, several visualization techniques make use of hierarchical edge bundles to reduce the visual clutter that can occur when drawing a large number of edges. Another example is the visualization of software in 3d, virtual reality, and augmented reality environments. In these environments edges can be drawn as splines in 3d space to overcome the natural limitations of the two-dimensional plane-e.g., the collision of edges with other objects. While Bézier curves are supported quite well by most UI frameworks and game engines, NURBS and B-Splines are not. Hence, spline-based visualizations are considerably more difficult to implement without in-depth knowledge in the area of *** this paper we present TinySpline, a general purpose library for NURBS, B-Splines, and Bézier curves that is well suited for implementing advanced edge visualization techniques-e.g., but not limited to, hierarchical edge bundles. The core of the library is written in ANSI C with a C++ wrapper for an object-oriented programming model. Based on the C++ wrapper, auto-generated bindings for C#, d, Go, Java, Lua, Octave, PHP, Python, R, and Ruby are provided, which enables TinySpline to be integrated into a large number of applications.
