Signal Processing on Static and dynamic 3d Meshes: Sparse Representations and Applications

Nowadays, real-time 3d scanning and reconstruction becomes a requirement for a variety of interactive applications in various fields, including heritage science, gaming, engineering, landscape topography, and medicine. From the introduction of 3d scanning, which allowed the representation of real world or synthetic objects into the virtual world, hardware and software advances have seen tremendous progress. However, despite the continuous improvement of the new generation image sensors and acquisition techniques, the acquired data are often corrupted by the low-frequency noise, outliers, misalignment, missing data, and variations in point density. These effects are amplified if the low-cost sensors and hardware are being used (e.g., mobile devices);thus, the acquisition and communication cost per datum is driven to a minimum. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the ongoing efforts in geometry and signal processing, describing several models from a wide range of signal processing relevant tasks, such as robust principal component analysis, compressive sampling, and matrix completion. Various scalable architectures and optimization algorithms are analyzed and reviewed, revealing significant insights into the fundamental processing operations and the involved implementation tradeoffs. Moreover, the impact of sparse modeling and optimization tools to several 3d mesh processing tasks, such as completion of missing data, feature preserving noise removal, and rejection of outliers, is illustrated via test cases with several constraints posed by the arbitrarily complex animated scenarios. Finally, the identified limitations together with the potential open research directions are also presented for future research efforts toward modeling and optimization for static and dynamic 3d models.

Three-dimensional (3-d) scene reconstruction is one of the key techniques in Augmented Reality (AR), which is related to the integration of image processing and display systems of complex information. Stereo matching is a computer vision based approach for 3-d scene reconstruction. In this paper, we explore an improved stereo matching network, SLEd-Net, in which a Single Long Encoder-decoder is proposed to replace the stacked hourglass network in PSM-Net for better contextual information learning. We compare SLEd-Net to state-of-the-art methods recently published, and demonstrate its superior performance on Scene Flow and KITTI2015 test sets.

Augmented reality applications become more and more important to enhance our daily life and workflows. The possibility of showing additional virtual content in a camera stream is helpful for many different use cases like room planning where such applications can offer a simple and intuitive visualization. However, augmented reality applications can suffer from the interference by real objects that may disrupt the user experience. In recent years, there has been research regarding the removal of real objects from camera streams by applying diminished reality techniques. Current approaches are generally limited to flat objects, video streams with little camera movement, or can only remove objects in front of simple and mostly planar backgrounds. In our approach, we show a robust and efficient way to remove a selected 3d object from the camera stream visually. The removal is based on a dense 3d reconstruction of the physical environment stored in a voxel grid that can be created and extended on-the-fly. Hereby, an undesired object can be replaced by a background rendered from the reconstruction allowing for more complex environments than previous approaches. Furthermore, remaining holes by the removal of the object are removed applying an inpainting approach. Finally, we apply color correction to get a seamless transition between the virtual content and the camera image.

With the development of remote sensing technology, using optical sensors to record and preserve heritage sites have been widely used and well recognized at an international level. different from the traditional recording method using hand-painting or plane table to do measurement, using non-invasive optical sensors like digital camera or laser/radar scanner can provide more realistic, accurate and precisely results. digital recording documents are much easier to preserve and can be utilized in many other purposes like cross-comparison, monitoring of shape and colors, multimedia museum exhibitions, visualization, reconstruction, virtual/augmented reality applications and so on. LidAR point cloud has real scale and high precision, but its color would be easily affected by weather, levels of brightness, and calibration of the mounted camera. The equipment is also heavy and expensive. The accuracy of image-based point cloud using digital camera is highly depended on the resolution of the images. The texture of 3d model using photogrammetry is more realistic. digital cameras are also portable. On account of portability, the digital camera is chosen to record the heritage site. This paper conducts a survey in the test field to simulate deformation using terrestrial LidAR scanner, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and handheld camera to observe movement of measuring points. Aerial images taken by UAV are georeferenced and the image quality is stable but the resolution is not higher than the handheld camera. Terrestrial images taken by handheld camera are easily affected by the photographer (e.g. blurry image because of vibration) and was needed to be given a real scale. Considering all pros and cons mentioned above, the LidAR point cloud was used to check the accuracy of image-based point cloud by handheld camera and UAV. In order to improve the recognition ability of fuzzy sparse scattered feature distribution image, it is necessary to carry out spatial vision distributed reconstruction and image virtual reconstruction. A virtual reconstruction method of sparse scattered feature distribution image based on complex analysis method is proposed. The grid distribution model of sparse scattered feature distribution image is constructed, and the spatial information feature distributed reconstruction model of sparse scattered feature distribution image is carried out by using image sparse feature point extraction method. Combined with block feature detection and image segmentation method, the boundary region detection of sparse scattered feature distribution image is carried out, and the spatial visual distributed reconstruction model of sparse scattered feature distribution image is established. Combined with fuzzy structure reconstruction method, the image filtering and information fusion of sparse scattered feature distribution image are carried out. according to the texture and detail area of sparse scattered feature distribution image, the 3d texture structure and sparse evacuation scrambling point reconstruction of image are carried out, and the 3d reconstruction of image is carried out by complex analysis method, and the gray histogram of sparse scattered feature distribution image is reconstructed. virtual reconstruction of sparse scattered feature distribution image is realized based on spatial vision distributed reconstruction. The simulation results show that the visual effect of virtual reconstruction of sparse scattered feature distribution image is better, and the quality of 3d image virtual reconstruction is higher.

Knee joint diseases have grown to be a major health risk and a planning system for knee surgery, such as Total knee arthroplasty (TKA), can be of great help. Knee surgery is very complex, requires multi-modal information and demands advanced skills. In this work, a surgical planning system has been designed, developed and demonstrated, with the aim to help surgeons get familiarized with the surgery, diagnose knee impairment, plan and optimize the operation procedures. First of all, the TKA procedures were analyzed. The tibia and femur bones are cut and artificial prostheses are implanted into the knee to relieve pain and recover the joint function. Then, the requirements, structure and implementation goals for the surgical planning system were defined. After that, the system was built up to realize the designed functionalities, including parsing of medical images from CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 3d reconstruction of the knee joint, segmentation of the regions of interest (ROIs), virtual osteotomy, measurement of spatial distance and angles, and simulated knee prosthesis installation. Finally, clinical imaging data were taken to demonstrate and validate system functionality.

The aim of the paper is to study the characteristics of different 3d digital models (point clouds, mesh, CSG, BIM) for the realization of a museum of historical buildings widespread in the territory of South Tyrol through the 3d modeling of several farmhouses between the towns of Collalbo, Longomoso and Siffiano, in the Renon area. Therefore, moving from a defined case study, the paper proposes a workflow for model choice, use, and sharing considering also users *** objective is to create a system that allows, the sharing, both on site and remotely, of farmhouses digital models, information, images and documents found during the research. The purpose is to enhance the territory with the promotion of its knowledge taking into account also the importance of the participative aspects. In fact, in this system, are crucial and are a fundamental part of the safeguarding process, effectively increasing the information content and filling any information gaps, allowing the system to grow and become increasingly considerable and effective for the knowledge, documentation and enhancement of the territory. © Authors 2019.

In order to obtain all-round information of an object or scene, 3d reconstruction technology used to reconstruct it in the past decades. This technology needs to reconstruct the 3d virtual model of the surface of the object in the computer, so it is necessary to carry out complex modeling processing on the object Aiming at the complexity of traditional modeling, drawing three-dimensional objects based on virtual viewpoint synthesis is proposed. IBR technology with implicit geometric information mainly used in depth-Image-Based Rendering (dIBR). The reconstruction of virtual objects is realized by bidirectional mapping, and finally the reproduction of the entire three-dimensional object can be completed by using a small amount of image data.
