Hair is one of the most critical characteristics of a person in the process of digitizing characters, but at the same time, hair modeling is still a very challenging task due to the diversity of hairstyles and the overlap among hair. We introduce a method to automatically generate 3d hair geometry from a front hair image, which can recover the outline and details of the hair geometry. We designed a encoder-decoder convolutional neural network which takes the 2d orientation field from a hair image as input, and output the characteristic hair geometry. Then we use the characteristic strands to search for eligible hairstyle from Hairstyle-database, and fuse retrieved hair model to get the nal hairstyle. This pipeline can automatically recover hair geometry from a front hair image without any supplementary information. Experimental results show that our approach achieves realistic reconstruction effect from real Internet pictures and self-portraits.

Procedural urban scene generation can show a lot of insights about infrastructure, organization and development of a city, and find itself many applications in different fields. On the other hand, in many cases the available information from satellite images and terrestrial dataset is limited, leaving considerable blank spaces in the generated virtual city. How to fill the blank spaces in order to obtain a more realistic scene is thus an important problem to be solved by designers. designers usually spent enormous time and effort to create three-dimensional (3d) urban models using 31) modeling software. Importing building models manually - one by one to cover the blank spaces in a large urban setting can be labor-intensive and also means high cost of time. Enlightened by these observations, this study is aimed at the design and implementation of an algorithm focusing on 1) the identification and positioning of blank spaces in a virtual urban area and 2) the automatic filling of such blank spaces, importing 3d models of existing buildings from a database.

The present article aims to consider the added value attached to the usage of new technologies in a project aimed to study heritage. Indeed, multimedia devices could be used to create representations useful to develop and disseminate information integrating the architectural and territorial framework and to reach a general understanding. The processed data come from a research project, based on an interdisciplinary approach, address to the study of medieval buildings in Armenia, Vayots dzor region, with the aim of studying and understanding the cultural heritage. Three different technologies are used to visualize and disseminate the results of the analyses carried out: the video, the hologram, and the virtual reality. These digital visualization methods enable experts to make the topics investigated accessible and comprehensible to a wider general public with a didactic and informative aim. The solid 3d-model of the site allows to virtually reproduce the reality and to provide a spatial perception of the site. Indeed, it is a neutral base, represents the morphological conformation and settlements, a landscape whose reference points are easily identified with the historical architectures, helping the public and spectators to get oriented inside the territory. These methods of representation allow to move from general view to particular, or to a different frame appropriate to the addressed topic. Thus, it binds the scientific research with the visual part, and enable communication, even in a context where it is difficult to use a common spoken or written language.

3d Human Body reconstruction from a monocular image is an important problem in computer vision with applications in virtual and augmented reality platforms, animation industry, en-commerce domain, etc. While several of the existing works formulate it as a volumetric or parametric learning with complex and indirect reliance on re-projections of the mesh, we would like to focus on implicitly learning the mesh representation. To that end, we propose a novel model, HumanMeshNet, that regresses a template mesh's vertices, as well as receives a regularization by the 3d skeletal locations in a multi-branch, multi-task setup. The image to mesh vertex regression is further regularized by the neighborhood constraint imposed by mesh topology ensuring smooth surface reconstruction. The proposed paradigm can theoretically learn local surface deformations induced by body shape variations and can therefore learn high-resolution meshes going ahead. We show comparable performance with SoA (in terms of surface and joint error) with far lesser computational complexity, modeling cost and therefore real-time reconstructions on three publicly available datasets. We also show the generalizability of the proposed paradigm for a similar task of predicting hand mesh models. Given these initial results, we would like to exploit the mesh topology in an explicit manner going ahead.

Immersive, stereoscopic displays may be instrumental to better interpreting 3-dimensional (3d) data. Furthermore, the advent of commodity-level virtual reality (VR) hardware has made this technology accessible for meaningful applications, such as medical education. Accordingly, in the current work we present a commodity level, immersive simulation for interacting with human ear anatomy. In the simulation, users may interact simultaneously with high resolution computed tomography (CT) scans and their corresponding, 3d anatomical structures. The simulation includes: (1) a commodity level, immersive virtual environment presented by the Oculus CV1, (2) segmented 3d models of head and ear structures generated from a CT dataset, (3) the ability to freely manipulate 2d and 3d data synchronously, and (4) a user-interface which allows for free exploration and manipulation of data using the Oculus touch controllers. The system was demonstrated to 10 otolaryngologists for evaluation. Physicians were asked to supply feedback via both questionnaire and discussion in order to determine the efficacy of the current system as well as the most pertinent applications for future research.

This paper studies a case on virtual reconstruction and interactive display based on Verge3d, a sort of WebGL technology. This case aims to reconstruct the Three Que Towers of Hanyuan Hall of daming Palace, whose structure is commonly used for the Emperor in Chinese ancient times and represents the high achievements in Chinese ancient architecture. In addition, this paper discussed the problems solved in this case: (1) achieve interaction display based on Verge3d WebGL technology to create interactive and immersive virtual reality experience; (2) work on smartphone under HTML5 network platform instead of the helmet to promote the personalized, intelligent and ubiquitous user experience; (3) reengineer modeling workflow through Sketchup and 3ds Max modeling software to balance efficiency and effect in 3d modeling.

We tackle the problem of automatically reconstructing a complete 3d model of a scene from a single RGB image. This challenging task requires inferring the shape of both visible and occluded surfaces. Our approach utilizes viewer-centered, multi-layer representation of scene geometry adapted from recent methods for single object shape completion. To improve the accuracy of view-centered representations for complex scenes, we introduce a novel "Epipolar Feature Transformer" that transfers convolutional network features from an input view to other virtual camera viewpoints, and thus better covers the 3d scene geometry. Unlike existing approaches that first detect and localize objects in 3d, and then infer object shape using category-specific models, our approach is fully convolutional, end-to-end differentiable, and avoids the resolution and memory limitations of voxel representations. We demonstrate the advantages of multi-layer depth representations and epipolar feature transformers on the reconstruction of a large database of indoor scenes.

The paper presents the application of some virtual Reality technologies developed in the Horizon 2020 i-MARECulture project to the case study of the sunken "Villa con ingresso a protiro", dated around the II century Ad, and located in the Marine Protected Area - Underwater Park of Baiae (Naples). The i-MARECulture project (***), in fact, aims to improve the public awareness about the underwater cultural heritage by developing new tool and techniques that take advantage of the virtual reality technologies to allow the general public to explore the archaeological remains outside of the submerged environment. To this end, the paper details the techniques and methods adopted for the development of an immersive virtual tour that allow users to explore, through a storytelling experience, a virtual replica and a 3d hypothetical reconstruction of the complex of the "Villa con ingresso a protiro".

We present a simple yet effective general-purpose framework for modeling 3d shapes by leveraging recent advances in 2d image generation using CNNs. Using just a single depth image of the object, we can output a dense multi-view depth map representation of 3d objects. Our simple encoder-decoder framework, comprised of a novel identity encoder and class-conditional viewpoint generator, generates 3d consistent depth maps. Our experimental results demonstrate the two-fold advantage of our approach. First, we can directly borrow architectures that work well in the 2d image domain to 3d. Second, we can effectively generate high-resolution 3d shapes with low computational memory. Our quantitative evaluations show that our method is superior to existing depth map methods for reconstructing and synthesizing 3d objects and is competitive with other representations, such as point clouds, voxel grids, and implicit functions.
