Laser scanners are often used to create accurate 3d models of buildings for civil engineering purposes, but the process of manually vectorizing a 3d point cloud is time consuming and error-prone (Adan and Huber, 2011). Therefore, the need to characterize and quantify complex environments in an automatic fashion arises, posing challenges for data analysis. This paper presents a system for 3d modeling by detecting planes in 3d point clouds, based on which the scene is reconstructed at a high architectural level through removing automatically clutter and foregrounddata. The implemented software detects openings, such as windows anddoors and completes the 3d model by inpainting.

The study presents a process of digital simulation that aims to investigate the legibility of multiple spaces in a complex architecture through architectural survey, virtualreconstruction and3dvisualization in immersive environment. The collaboration between two research institutions, one Italian and the other Chinese, developed a reconstruction of a building in the campus of the Tsinghua University of Beijing using digital tools, in order to understand the behaviours during the fruition of that space. digital simulation in the visibility theme guarantees the possibility of testing multiple configurations and showing the impacts of the different environmental hypothesis.

In terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), the surface geometry of objects is scanned by laser beams and recordeddigitally. This produces a discrete set of scan points, commonly referred to as a point cloud. The coordinates of the scan points are determined by measuring the angles and the time-of-flight relative to the origin (scanner position). However, if it comes to mirror surfaces laser beams are fully reflected, due to the high reflectivity. Mirrors do not appear in the point cloud at all. Instead, for every reflected beam, a incorrect scan point is created behind the actual mirror plane. Consequently, problems arise in multiple derived application fields such as 3dvirtualreconstruction of complexarchitectures. The paper presents a new approach to automatically detect framed rectangular mirrors with known dimensions and to correct the 3d point cloud, using the calculated mirror plane.

The study examines the numerous medieval fortified sites that are in ruins throughout the Sicilian territory. Their landscape and historical value is significant, but they are unfortunately abandoned, not in stable conditions and often no metrically reliable graphic representation exists. The methodology we chose required a combined3d survey campaign anddata processing aimed at obtaining 2d and3ddrawings, as well as a virtual reality application to provide knowledge andvirtual fruition of the sites. The entire experimental procedure was optimised to provide multi-scalar readings of the sites under investigation, that include their details, the location, territory, and landscape. The article presents the results of a case study carried out on the Maletto Castle in Sicily (Italy).

In a context of increased maintenance operations and workers generational renewal, a nuclear owner and operator like Electricite de France (EdF) is interested in the scaling up of tools and methods of "as-built virtual reality" for larger buildings and wider audiences. However, acquisition and sharing of as-built data on a large scale (large andcomplex multi-floored buildings) challenge current scientific and technical capacities. In this paper, we first present a state of the art of scanning tools and methods for industrial plants with very complex architecture. Then, we introduce the inner characteristics of the multi-sensor scanning andvisualization of the interior of the most complex building of a power plant: a nuclear reactor building. We introduce several developments that made possible a first complete survey of such a large building, from acquisition, processing and fusion of multiple data sources (3d laser scans, total-station survey, RGB panoramic, 2d floor plans, 3d CAd as-built models). In addition, we present the concepts of a smart application developed for the painless exploration of the whole dataset. The goal of this application is to help professionals, unfamiliar with the manipulation of such datasets, to take into account spatial constraints induced by the building complexity while preparing maintenance operations. Finally, we discuss the main feedbacks of this large experiment, the remaining issues for the generalization of such large scale surveys and the future technical and scientific challenges in the field of industrial "virtual reality".

In November 2011 the listed state rooms on the second floor of the Viennese city palace Am Hof 2 were largely destroyed by fire. The historic rooms on the ground floor, the monumental, marble-clad bank service hall and the wood-panelled club rooms all suffered badly from other consequences of the fire such as water and smoke damage. Planning and concept development for the reconstruction of the interior elements made of various materials was carried out be a team of specialist conservators in close collaboration with the Bundesdenkmalamt (Federal Monuments Office). The work is the final part of a multi-year research project on the Milan Cathedral, which focused on the complete survey and three-dimensional modeling of the Great Spire (Fassi et al., 2011) and the two altars in the transept. The main purpose of the job was to prepare support data for the maintenance operations involving the cathedral since 2009 and still in progress. The research job had begun addressing our efforts to identify which methods would allow an expeditious but comprehensive measure of complex architectural structure as a whole.
