The evolution of digitisation technologies and the growing transition to the digital age have reshaped the cultural heritage landscape, expanding possibilities beyond digital documentation or additionally immersive interactive experiences. This transition has also fostered innovative approaches for the (re)use of cultural heritage digital data. This paper proposes an integrated approach of digital and virtual technologies, by effectively integrating and (re)using different available digital data with the final aim of reconstructing a selected portion of the Tiwanaku UNESCO complex in a virtual Environment, with work still in progress. The research methodology involved gathering 2d and 3d digital products for the 3d modeling of two areas within Tiwanaku, namely the Kalasasaya and the Semi-Subterranean temples, and the 3d reconstruction of their monuments. Finally, all the reconstructed elements were integrated into a virtual Environment where the virtual experience goes beyond mere site navigation. It provides an immersive and interactive heritage learning experience through object interaction, historical context storytelling, and also offers a unique opportunity to imagine how the ancient city of Tiwanaku looked like by introducing some 3d-reconstructed monuments to the modeled site in their original configuration and position.

Video acquisition with 360 degrees (spherical) cameras is becoming increasingly popular for the opportunity to capture the entire scene around the user in a relatively short time. The method can also be attractive for photogrammetric applications. As the overlap between consecutive frames is undoubtedly guaranteed, 3d models can be generated with an automated processing workflow. The paper illustrates the results achieved with 5k 360 degrees videos captured with different Insta360 cameras. As the number of frames can become large, two complementary solutions are proposed to provide approximate initial exterior orientation parameters: the integration of the trajectory captured through GNSS, and the creation of an acquisition plan with a GIS-based application. The availability of approximated EO parameters provides a visibility map between the frames and reduces the computational cost during image matching. Experimental results demonstrate that such preliminary information is necessary for large datasets. Indeed, the photogrammetric processing of the entire dataset without the proposed preliminary EO parameters resulted in unreliable or incomplete orientation results.

This contribution is based on a joint research project developed by the University of Ferrara, department of Architecture (Italy) and the Escola Politecnica USP of Sao Paulo (Brazil) by the which it was possible to scan the interior and exterior surfaces of the ancient blast furnaces of Sao Joao do Ipanema, an extraordinary example of industry of cast iron production of the XIX century. The research was aimed at investigating the evolution of the blast furnace technique exploring a surprisingly rich Brazilian technical literature, with description records and drawings dated between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Beside historical documentation it was also implemented on site a 3d survey campaign of the furnaces to understand how the profiles were modified along the time. The first outputs of the project were thus focused on the evaluation of the transformation of the equipment in terms of more efficient shapes able to enhance the relationship between blast furnace profile fuel consumption and productivity. The use of accurate digital technology, the following CAd elaboration of the chimney, the 3d model and the comparison with XIX century technical drawings confirmed that European directors of the plant were familiar with the most advance technical and scientific procedures and brought to the site a great technological improvement by an innovative know-how.

The contribution addresses the issue of the integrated survey aimed at three-dimensional modeling for the documentation of different types of terrain through the analysis of two case studies located in the province of Pavia - Italy. The techniques of aerial photogrammetric acquisition SfM (UAVs), Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and Mobile (MLS) are now consolidated and widely used, managing to meet the needs of documentation of land levelling, monitoring, and analysis of landslide volumes. The two case studies present difficulties due to a strong inclination of the land and extensive presence of vegetation in the first case and to a strong presence of agricultural canalizations in the second case. The data processing phase focused on the comparison between MLS and close-range photogrammetry, while the acquisitions from TLS were used as control data. This acquisition method allows avoiding the process of approximation and reconstruction of the dTM under the vegetation, ensuring the correctness of the data relating to the ground course. The database allows the generation of highly reliable dTMs using specific point cloud modeling and processing software. Fast survey instruments are ideal in large areas or in hilly areas where sub-vertical sections and covered by vegetation are often present, difficult to detect only with close-range photogrammetry.

The process of 3d building modeling serves a multitude of practical and strategic purposes across diverse industries. Building a 3d model involves employing a range of techniques and technologies. Among these, the most used methods include 3d laser scanning and photogrammetry, whether applied at close-range or through the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). In photogrammetry, ground control points (GCPs) are generally needed to scale and georeference the digital reconstruction process, but it is a timeconsuming practice or sometimes impractical or dangerous. This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of two integrated devices to perform photogrammetric 3d reconstruction without GCPs. They are both composed by a Sony ZV1 camera coupled with two different RTK/PPK GNSS system: The Emlid Reach RS2 GNSS receiver and the Emlid Reach M2 module with a multi-band GNSS helical antenna. different sets of images were acquired with the two proposed devices for the lever-Arm estimation and to perform the 3d surveying of the Galata monastery historical monument. The accuracy of the process and derived dense point clouds is assessed by comparing them with GCPs and a reference point cloud derived by fusing an UAS and a high-resolution mobile laser scanning point cloud. The ultimate goal is to obtain a 3d building model without the use of GCPs in the process of bundle block adjustment with centimeter accuracy. © Author(s) 2024.

Schwarzenburg Castle is one of the few Alsatian castles that can be dated with precision. The Schwarzenbourg family, taking advantage of a favourable historical and political context, built the castle in 1261 on the municipal boundary of the town of Munster. Initially intended for residential use, the castle passed through the centuries from family to family, and shortly becoming a ruin. The first major renovation was realized in the 15th century, but for military purposes rather than for housing. This was the only one, as the castle was quickly abandoned at the end of the same century. It was only during the First World War that the castle was used by the German army, which built a bunker in the upper courtyard. Schwarzenbourg castle is, therefore, an original in Alsace, both in terms of its history and its characteristics, which have no regional equal. The objective of this modelling project is twofold. On the one hand, to model the current state of the castle, i.e., an advanced state of ruin for certain elements, and, on the other hand, to model the reconstruction of the castle as it was when it was built in 1261. This double objective comes up against several problems, mainly technical. Indeed, how to move from a point cloud of a certain density and quality to a surface model allowing a realistic rendering? How to limit the influence of the noise on the quality of the surface model? How to remain faithful to the cloud while simplifying the geometric primitives to make the rendering more efficient? Or what technique should be used to reconstitute the castle as it was when it was built? The objective here was to realize the transformation from a consolidated and geo-referenced point cloud to a surface model allowing for a photo-realistic rendering.

Airborne LidAR technology has become an essential tool in archaeology during the last two decades since it allows archaeologists to measure and map items or structures that would otherwise be hidden under vegetation. In order to detect and characterise the archaeological evidence, it is a common practice to extract accurate digital terrain models (dTM) by filtering out the vegetation from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) datasets. Although previous approaches have performed well in ALS filtration, they are still subject to several variables (flight height, forest cover, type of sensors utilised, etc.) and are frequently integrated into expensive commercial software or customised for specific locations. This study presents a workflow for treating ALS archaeological datasets using machine learning algorithms for both filtering the vegetation and detecting hidden structures. The workflow is applied to two different archaeological environments (in terms of structures, vegetation, landscape, point density), and results demonstrate that the pipeline is rapid and accurate, and the prediction model is transferable.

Visual computing is an indispensable tool in biology, revolutionizing the way researchers interact with complex biological data. The integration of high-resolution virtual Reality offers rich visualization experience, crucial for advancing our knowledge in areas such as genomics, proteomics, and cellular biology. Recent VR-based biological visualization often deploys lower-resolution Head Mounted displays (HMds), limiting the observation of fine structural detail. Moreover, the simultaneous exploration of multiple datasets in an interactive manner is still a research challenge. This work presents an interactive 3d reconstruction and visualization system for biological data in ultra-high-definition VR. The system supports volume rendering, flexible rendering, and the simultaneous visualization of multiple datasets, all within an 8K VR environment. Intricate cellular and subcellular structures as well as detailed protein folding patterns and subtle variations in tissue density are visualized, critical for accurate medical diagnosis and research. Our system's performance is evaluated based on loading time, frames per second, and device latency, while handling large biological datasets. A think aloud study provided expert feedback. © 2025 IEEE.

Indoor Mobile Mapping Systems (IMMSs) technologies are becoming increasingly popular thanks to the possibility of acquiring a massive amount of 3d data in a fast and effective way in those areas where GNSS signal is unavailable, like urban canyons, densely vegetated areas, underground sites and buildings. They offer an efficient way to produce point clouds but with noticeably lower accuracy than the traditional Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). The present paper wants to analyse two different methods to improve the accuracy of the point cloud coming from an IMMS survey in a vast urban scenario. The first approach uses points collected during an RTK GNSS survey as Ground Control Points (GCPs). The second one involves TLS static scans as Ground Control Scans (GCSs). Both these procedures allow us to introduce constraints before generating the rigid final point cloud. The tested IMMS is the Backpack Heron MS Twin Color, produced by Gexcel S.r.l. The instrument was tested during the acquisition of the historical centre of Meda (MB) in the northern part of Italy. Results show that in those areas between the constraints, the maximum error of residuals on checkpoints is some decimetres. The IMMS has allowed us to quickly survey a vast area not otherwise obtainable with traditional survey techniques. The developed procedures proved to be essential for proper reconstruction of the environment.

The paper presents the first results of the metric and geometric investigations carried out in the analysis of the stamps on Greek-Italic amphorae of Neapolitan production, found during the archaeological excavation of Piazza Nicola Amore, in Naples, Italy. The experiments were carried out with a view to defining a methodological process useful on the one hand to document in a digital archive the three-dimensional morphology of the artefact under investigation, and on the other to allow new readings, through a manipulation of the data that goes beyond the physical limits of the artefact itself. In particular, the research presented here proposes the topological investigation for the identification of stamps obtained from the same punch and therefore the possibility of ideally reconstructing the printing matrix. Since the stamps left by the punches on the amphorae are impressed at millimetric depths, the stamps are not always easy to read using traditional archaeological documentation methods. The research operations therefore began with the digitisation of a substantial number of finds by means of three-dimensional, reality-based surveys of sub-millimetre detail. Before proceeding with specific correspondence analyses, the archaeological classification based on the typological similarities of the marks was of great support.
