This paper will focus on the technical approaches used for a Phd thesis regarding architecture and spatial organization of benedict abbeys in Touraine in the Middle Ages, in particular the abbey of Cormery in the heart of the Loire Valley. Monastic space is approached in a diachronic way, from the early Middle Ages to the modern times using multi-sources data: architectural study, written sources, ancient maps, various iconographic documents. Many scales are used in the analysis, from the establishment of the abbeys in a territory to the scale of a building like the tower-entrance of the church of Cormery. These methodological axes have been developed in the research unit CITERES for many years and the 3d technology is now used to go further along in that field. The recording in 3d of the buildings of the abbey of Cormery allows us to work at the scale of the monastery and to produce useful data such as sections or orthoimages of the ground and the walls faces which are afterwards drawn and analysed. The study of these documents, crossed with the other historical sources, allowed us to emphasize the presence of walls older than what we thought and to discover construction elements that had not been recognized earlier and which enhance the debate about the construction date St Paul tower and associated the monastic church.

documentation of cultural assets through improved acquisition processes for advanced 3d modelling is one of the main challenges to be faced in order to address, through digital representation, advanced analysis on shape, appearance and conservation condition of cultural heritage. 3d modelling can originate new avenues in the way tangible cultural heritage is studied, visualized, curated, displayed and monitored, improving key features such as analysis and visualization of material degradation and state of conservation. An applied research focused on the analysis of surface specifications and material properties by means of 3d laser scanner survey has been developed within the project of digital Preservation of FAUUSP building, Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. The integrated 3d survey has been performed by the dIAPReM Center of the department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara in cooperation with the FAUUSP. The 3d survey has allowed the realization of a point cloud model of the external surfaces, as the basis to investigate in detail the formal characteristics, geometric textures and surface features. The digital geometric model was also the basis for processing the intensity values acquired by laser scanning instrument;this method of analysis was an essential integration to the macroscopic investigations in order to manage additional information related to surface characteristics displayable on the point cloud.

Historical photographs contain high density of information and are of great importance as sources in humanities research. In addition to the semantic indexing of historical images based on metadata, it is also possible to reconstruct geometric information about the depicted objects or the camera position at the time of the recording by employing photogrammetric methods. The approach presented here is intended to investigate (semi-) automated photogrammetric reconstruction methods for heterogeneous collections of historical (city) photographs and photographic documentation for the use in the humanities, urban research and history sciences. From a photogrammetric point of view, these images are mostly digitized photographs. For a photogrammetric evaluation, therefore, the characteristics of scanned analog images with mostly unknown camera geometry, missing or minimal object information and low radiometric and geometric resolution have to be considered. In addition, these photographs have not been created specifically for documentation purposes and so the focus of these images is often not on the object to be evaluated. The image repositories must therefore be subjected to a preprocessing analysis of their photogrammetric usability. Investigations are carried out on the basis of a repository containing historical images of the Kronentor ('crown gate') of the dresden Zwinger. The initial step was to assess the quality and condition of available images determining their appropriateness for generating three-dimensional point clouds from historical photos using a structure-from-motion evaluation (SfM). Then, the generated point clouds were assessed by comparing them with current measurement data of the same object.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss how much the phases of flight planning and the setting of the camera orientation can affect a UAVs photogrammetric survey. The test site chosen for these evaluations was the Rocca of San Silvestro, a medieval monumental castle near Livorno, Tuscany (Italy). during the fieldwork, different sets of data have been acquired using different parameters for the camera orientation and for the set up of flight plans. Acquisition with both nadiral and oblique orientation of the camera have been performed, as well as flights with different direction of the flight lines (related with the shape of the object of the survey). The different datasets were then processed in several blocks using Pix4d software and the results of the processing were analysed and compared. Our aim was to evaluate how much the parameters described above can affect the generation of the final products of the survey, in particular the product chosen for this evaluation was the point cloud.

Close-range photogrammetry is an image-based technique which has often been used for the 3d documentation of heritage objects. Recently, advances in the field of image processing and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) have resulted in a renewed interest in this technique. However, commercially ready-to-use UAVs are often equipped with smaller sensors in order to minimize payload and the quality of the documentation is still an issue. In this research, two commercial UAVs (the Sensefly Albris and dJI Phantom 3 Professional) were setup to record the 19 th century St-Pierre-le-Jeune church in Strasbourg, France. Several software solutions (commercial and open source) were used to compare both UAVs' images in terms of calibration, accuracy of external orientation, as well as dense matching. Results show some instability in regards to the calibration of Phantom 3, while the Albris had issues regarding its aerotriangulation results. despite these shortcomings, both UAVs succeeded in producing dense point clouds of up to a few centimeters in accuracy, which is largely sufficient for the purposes of a city 3d GIS (Geographical Information System). The acquisition of close range images using UAVs also provides greater Lod flexibility in processing. These advantages over other methods such as the TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning) or terrestrial close range photogrammetry can be exploited in order for these techniques to complement each other.

Mining heritage is essential to understand the history, landscape and cultural manifestations linked to mining industry. The Mountain Range of Cartagena-La Unin is one of the most relevant old Mediterranean mining areas, with mining sites that were already exploited before the Carthaginian domination. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2009. Our aim is to document and to enhance its premises, which are currently in a bad state of preservation and have been plundered. The methodology that we suggest combines various techniques, such as laser scanning, LIdAR and digital photogrammetry, in order to obtain the best results based on the characteristics of the objects to be inventoried. For this study, we have chosen an area in which a digital model has been created by means of terrestrial laser scanning and airborne LIdAR, then we have textured it with the images taken. With this model, it is possible to measure the deterioration and displacement suffered by its elements, in particular, the chimney and the boiler room.

Conservation of Cultural Heritage is a key issue and structural changes and damages can influence the mechanical behaviour of artefacts and buildings. The use of Finite Elements Methods (FEM) for mechanical analysis is largely used in modelling stress behaviour. The typical workflow involves the use of CAd 3d models made by Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS) surfaces, representing the ideal shape of the object to be simulated. Nowadays, 3d documentation of CH has been widely developed through reality-based approaches, but the models are not suitable for a direct use in FEA: the mesh has in fact to be converted to volumetric, and the density has to be reduced since the computational complexity of a FEA grows exponentially with the number of nodes. The focus of this paper is to present a new method aiming at generate the most accurate 3d representation of a real artefact from highly accurate 3d digital models derived from reality-based techniques, maintaining the accuracy of the high-resolution polygonal models in the solid ones. The approach proposed is based on a wise use of retopology procedures and a transformation of this model to a mathematical one made by NURBS surfaces suitable for being processed by volumetric meshers typically embedded in standard FEM packages. The strong simplification with little loss of consistency possible with the retopology step is used for maintaining as much coherence as possible between the original acquired mesh and the simplified model, creating in the meantime a topology that is more favourable for the automatic NURBS conversion.

3d digital models are used in a wide range of applications such as computer games, virtual reality, engineering and urban design. A common method to create 3d models is to create a point cloud using laser scanners, structured lighting sensors, or image-based modelling techniques, and from that construct a 3d mesh. The resulting meshes often exhibit unsatisfactory and erroneous mesh regions, e.g. due to inaccessible parts, reflective surfaces, and occlusion. In this paper we present a new approach for correcting erroneous mesh regions in blocky objects, such as buildings, using self-similarities. Our system uses a novel graph-based search technique where each node is a plane fitted to the model using RANSAC and edges are made between adjacent planes. This graph is used to find defects in a mesh by analysing the planes and neighbourhoods of all nodes in the point cloud. The system recognizes a hole in the mesh and fills it by copying matching patches from the same mesh. Regions of the mesh that must be replaced are found by a voting system where dissimilar nodes with a similar neighbourhood vote against each other. Our solution produces visually accurate models of blocky objects with holes and/or missing corners and edges. The approach currently only works for simple models and can only "heal" individual or connected faces, rather than complex holes. However, in contrast to existing solutions it works with noisy point clouds and does not require the construction of a polygonal modal.
