The use of 3d models to document archaeological findings witnessed to boost in the latest years, mainly thanks to the large adoption of digital photogrammetry for the virtual reconstruction of ancient artifatcs. For this reason, the widespread availability of digital 3d objects obliges the research community to face with a hard challenge: which is the best way for allowing visitors being in contact with the real estate of cultural goods? The work described in these pages answers to these questions by describing a novel solution for the enhanced interaction and visualization of a complex 3d model. The installation consists in an autostereoscopic display paired with a remotely connected (with a wired connection) touch-pad for the interaction with the contents displayed in it. The main advantage of using such technology is represented by the fact that one is not obliged to wear cumbersome devices but at the same time one can have a 3d view of the object without any additional aid. The system allows, through a touch-pad, to manage the 3d views and interact with a very small object that in its virtual dimension is magnified with respect to a classical museum arrangement. The research results, applied to the real case exhibition presented, have proved the innovation and usability of the multimedia solutions, which required the use of complex hardware components and a tricky implementation of the whole software architecture. The digital disruption in the CH domain should be also entrusted in the use of advanced interfaces that at the same time are intuitive and usable interaction methods.

For designing a simulate software for human tissue modeling and analysis, Visual Studio 2010 is selected as the development tool to design and develop a 3d reconstruction of the human tissue system with language C++. It can be used alone. It also can be a module for virtual surgery systems. The system includes medical image segmentation and 3d reconstruction modules, and model visualization is achieved. This software system has been used to reconstruct hip muscles, femurs and hip bones accurately. The results show that these geometry models can simulate the structure of the hip reasonably well.

A light distributed visual odometry method adapted to embedded hardware platform is proposed. The aim is to guide underwater surveys in real time. We rely on image stream captured using portable stereo rig attached to the embedded system. Taken images are analyzed on the fly to assess image quality in terms of sharpness and lightness, so that immediate actions can be taken accordingly. Images are then transferred over the network to another processing unit to compute the odometry. Relying on a standard ego-motion estimation approach, we speed up points matching between image quadruplets using a low level points matching scheme relying on fast Harris operator and template matching that is invariant to illumination changes. We benefit from having the light source attached to the hardware platform to estimate a priori rough depth belief following light divergence over distance low. The rough depth is used to limit points correspondence search zone as it linearly depends on disparity. A stochastic relative bundle adjustment is applied to minimize re-projection errors. The evaluation of the proposed method demonstrates the gain in terms of computation time w.r.t. other approaches that use more sophisticated feature descriptors. The built system opens promising areas for further development and integration of embedded computer vision techniques.

Museums are no longer static depositories for objects, as they used to be for the past two centuries. Online and interactive access has created new opportunities for museums and cultural institutions to reach out and discover new audiences for promotion of cultural achievements. The virtual tours and the panorama reconstructions become among the most popular solutions for virtual consultation of historical monuments. A Tunisian virtual museum application aims to make its relative monuments more accessible to experts such as archaeologist or art historians, and even to the large public. In this research, we intend to present an invariant based approaches for the reconstruction of both mosaic panorama and 3d models. We propose a framework to create a Tunisian virtual museum and we focused on an interactive application related to Bardo museum. We apply affine invariance in a finite set of viewpoints to compute shape descriptors with completeness and stability properties. Such affine invariants serve to refine 3d model generated by classic shape-from-silhouette algorithm and to assist the creation of panorama image mosaics from uncalibrated images.

This research concentrates on defense-type systems for operational awareness using virtual reality solutions. Many computer vision solutions in defense environments concentrate on removing user decision from systems for automation, but in doing so remove trained military professionals from decision making. Instead this research looks to reintegrate the military professional by providing a real-time point cloud visualization of a previously unmapped environment, in virtual reality, for remote operation of an unmanned vehicle. due to an interest in a low-cost and modular system, that could be used on a variety of unmanned vehicles, including those used in underwater environments, the solution has moved away from LIdAR and Kinnect's laser-based systems and towards stereo cameras, particularly webcams. While looking to provide this approach, several other areas of interest become apparent, including the need to have a reliable stereo reconstruction under variant lighting conditions, particularly in the case of backlight in natural environments. Consequently, a variety of keypoint detection algorithms and point cloud reconstruction methods are being explored in conjunction with their usefulness within real-time constraints and with low-resolution images. Also, it will require evaluating different point cloud render techniques such as splatting, and storing the data in reliable data structures for effective LOds for real-time rendering. Then, finally, it will be important to explore research on effective user operated virtual environments and simulations to determine best practices for navigation and interface in the front-facing part of the system that allows the user operation.

It's an effective mean for large-scale 3d scene reconstruction using a global structure from motion (SfM) pipeline. However, those methods are time-consuming in common. The auxiliary information from the EXIF is helpful for the reconstruction process. In the paper, we will use the GPS data to select potential matching images, and some distant image pairs will be discarded directly without calculating feature matching. This strategy can greatly accelerate the reconstruction process. We also use two different manners to deal with the feature correspondences in order to speed up the process and get more points in the final structure. When estimating the global camera poses, we add a global residual item to the optimization equation to make the camera poses more robust. Our method performs fast and robust on several image sets of real scene captured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

Heart atlas reconstruction plays an important role in the personalized disease diagnosis, modeling and simulation. In this paper, we proposed a flexible framework of heart atlas reconstruction, which consists of vectorization of labeled heart dataset and mesh reconstruction based on contour lines. The proposed framework is the combination of some traditional methods, the contribution of this paper is that performance is good through combining the various methods. We evaluated the proposed method on the visible human cardiac datasets. The experiment results manifest that the reconstructed atlas is high-efficiency and accurate.

In this contribution the results of a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) prospecting survey in the chapel of Aragon, within the Co-cathedral of St. John in Valletta, Malta, are presented. These results are part of a wider campaign carried out with the final goal of prospecting the subsurface in order to identify voids and/or graves beneath the tomb slabs composing the complex flooring of the entire Co-Cathedral. In particular, in the chapel of Aragon results were compared with historical documents in order to identify possible burial sites. In addition, a 3d digital model of the Chapel has been obtained through the use of photogrammetric techniques with the ultimate goal of integrating the GPR results within the digital model. © 2018 IEEE.

An intra-class complex object shape representation architecture (IConv-dAE) is proposed. It outperforms prior work in 3d shape completion and reconstruction through data-driven learning in forms of volumetric representation. The main mark of this architecture is the improved performance for a more complex intra-class object shape representation. The shape representation has lots of complex shape variants and improved resolution of volumetric representation from 30 x 30 x 30 up to 100 x 100 x 100. In our experiments, the designed architectures are applied for testing generative ability of our proposed architecture for completed shape, noised shape, slice-missing shape and structure-missing shape. And the improved performance over existing deep neural network architectures can be achieved.
