Nowadays, the adoption of BIM processes in the AEC (architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry means to be oriented towards synergistic workflows, based on informative instruments capable of realizing the virtual model of the building. The target of this article is to speak about the interoperability matter, approaching the subject through a theoretical part and also a practice example, in order to show how these notions are applicable in real situations. In particular, the case study analysed belongs to the Cultural Heritage field, where it is possible to find some difficulties - both in the modelling and sharing phases - due to the complexity of shapes and elements. Focusing on the interoperability between different software, the questions are: What and how many kind of information can I share? Given that this process leads also to a standardization of the modelled parts, is there the possibility of an accuracy loss?

The depth of Field (doF) is a vital factor in photogrammetric applications. Its effect is in most cases pretty obvious especially when capturing small artefacts. It is very important to observe its behaviour as it affects the ability to capture all the details of an object. Focus stacking is a technique in computational photography, in which a set of images focused on different planes with limited doF are combined in order to considerably extend the doF. Today, there is a number of focus stacking methods that can be applied in order to produce a full-focus image. In this paper, we investigate the application and effects of focus stacking on SfM-MVS 3d reconstruction. Specifically, our experiment involves the 3d reconstruction of a selected artefact using both traditional all-focus photography and focus stacking. The artefact has already been digitised with a high accuracy and resolution structured light 3d scanner, and that 3d model served as the reference model, with which SfM models were compared. We discuss on these fist results and present some preliminary assessment on the application of focus stacking for the SfM-MVS-based 3d reconstruction.

The technological solutions, made available today, offer opportunities of great interest for the detection in the field of cultural heritage;instrumentation for the survey and advanced multimedia representations for objects of archaeological, artistic, architectural. Since we changed the type of information, not more interpretation consists of a single piece of data, but from a set of data, must be changed, consequently, also the systems for their management or better, if until now the only situation of interest was that of having to deal with the data representing only the text, data are now made up of sounds, images, video and three-dimensional models. For these reasons and others, we can discuss in continuation, systems and storage structures classics are still not sufficient to manage these new realities. An architectural structure is a set of three-dimensional components that define spatially a form and a project idea;so that the representation of the architecture may not avail itself simply means two-dimensional graphs to describe it and describe it in all its parts, but need, and it is now possible, systems that provide for the possibility to analyze from multiple points of view the forms that compose it. The communication media can play a very important role to get directions on the actions of restoration and enhancement of the cultural and environmental heritage. Help can be provided by information and its simulation systems of virtual reality with which, in addition to conveying information, you can view models to better describe the development that the well has had in history. This research starts from the need to develop new systems of representation and data management. Today 3d models and point clouds are very popular being currently used in several fields, shared through the internet and even accessed on mobile phones. despite their broad availability, there is still a relevant need of methods, preferably automatic, to provide 3d data with meaningful attributes that characterize and provide significance to the objects represented in 3d. Segmentation is the process of grouping point clouds into multiple homogeneous regions with similar properties whereas classification is the step that labels these regions. The main goal of this paper is to analyse the most popular methodologies and algorithms to segment and classify 3d point clouds. Strong and weak points of the different solutions presented in literature or implemented in commercial software will be listed and shortly explained. For some algorithms, the results of the segmentation and classification is shown using real examples at different scale in the Cultural Heritage field. Finally, open issues and research topics will be discussed.

Image-based modeling techniques are an important tool for producing 3d models in a practical and cost effective manner. Accurate image-based models can be created as long as one can retrieve precise image calibration and orientation information which is nowadays performed automatically in computer vision and photogrammetry. The first step for orientation is to have sufficient correspondences across the captured images. Keypoint descriptors like SIFT or SURF are a successful approach for finding these correspondences. The extraction of precise image correspondences is crucial for the subsequent image orientation and image matching steps. Indeed there are still many challenges especially with wide-baseline image configuration. After the extraction of a sufficient and reliable set of image correspondences, a bundle adjustment is used to retrieve the image orientation parameters. In this paper, a brief description of our previous work on automatic camera network design is initially reported. This semi-automatic procedure results in wide-baseline high resolution images covering an object of interest, and including approximations of image orientations, a rough 3d object geometry and a matching matrix indicating for each image its matching mates. The main part of this paper will describe the subsequent image matching where the pre-knowledge on the image orientations and the pre-created rough 3d model of the study object is exploited. Ultimately the matching information retrieved during that step will be used for a precise bundle block adjustment. Since we defined the initial image orientation in the design of the network, we can compute the matching matrix prior to image matching of high resolution images. For each image involved in several pairs that is defined in the matching matrix, we detect the corners or keypoints and then transform them into the matching images by using the designed orientation and initial 3d model. The Hellenic Institute of Marine archaeology (H. I. M. A.)(1) has been conducting an underwater archaeological research in the west coast of southern Pagasetikos Gulf, since 2000. Every year the underwater research focuses on specific archaeological targets that have been recovered during previous field campaigns. The current publication elaborates on the comprehensive documentation of the underwater archaeological site at Cape Glaros, during the 2015 field season, under the direction of the archaeologist Elias Spondylis. The 2015 research campaign was conducted within the framework of the ITACA-Innovation Technologies and Applications for Coastal archaeological sites European Project (FP7/2007-2013, GA No 606805), at two archaeological sites, namely the Cape Glaros and Metohi. It was among the most important challenges of the project to successfully produce the detailed and accurate 3d mapping of the Cape Glaros site that covers an extended area. Four large concentrations of pottery finds and numerous anchors of different typology have been recorded, that can be dated from the late Hellenistic to the Byzantine periods. This challenge was tackled through the simultaneous implementation of three recording methods;photogrammetry, geodesy and conventional architectural mapping. The workflow of the documentation process, including data acquisition, processing and graphic visualization, along with the derived results are presented below.

This paper deals with the assessing of pathologies in facades using a variety of intensity data provided by different terrestrial laser scanner. In particular, a complex building built in the Villamayor Stone that is to be candidate as a Global Heritage Stone Resource has been chosen as study case. The Villamayor Stone were quarrying for the construction and ornamentation of monuments in Salamanca, declared World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1988. The objective of this paper is to assess the pathologies of Villamayor Stone and compare the results obtained through the laser techniques with the classical techniques of mapped pathologies (i.e. visual inspection). For that intensity data coming from laser scanners will be used as non-destructive techniques applied to the facades and several retired plaques (after of building restoration) of Villamayor Stone with pathologies (fissures, scales, loss of matter, humidity/biological colonization) carried to the laboratory. Subsequently it will perform different comparisons between the accuracy reached with the different sensors and a high precision model setup on laboratory which performs as "ground truth". In particular, the following objectives will be pursued: i) accuracy assessment of the results obtained in in situ and laboratory;ii) an automation or semi-automation of the detection of pathologies in Villamayor Stone;iii) discriminate the different types of Villamayor Stone used in the facades in function of the radiometric response;iv) establish a methodology for detection and assessing of pathologies based on laser scanner intensity data applied to monuments and modern buildings built in Villamayor Stone.

The World Heritage Convention, drawn by various international bodies in 1972, was designed to protect cultural or natural places of outstanding universal value so that future generations may be able to enjoy them. Responding to these principles as well as to the Charter on the Preservation of digital heritage (Vancouver, 2003), this multidisciplinary project, which involves archaeologists, art historians, conservators and computer scientists, aims to create an open access, 3d interactive online geo-database of endangered architectural and archaeological heritage in the South Eastern Mediterranean basin;a region of tremendous cultural importance whose rech heritage is unfortunately threatened by both natural and human factors. A wide range of 3d modelling and topographic techniques have been applied to create accurate reconstructions of heritage sites, enriched by a extensive array of metadata.

This paper investigates immersive technologies to increase exploration time in an underwater archaeological site, both for the public, as well as, for researchers and scholars. Focus is on the Mazotos shipwreck site in Cyprus, which is located 44 meters underwater. The aim of this work is two-fold: (a) realistic modelling and mapping of the site and (b) an immersive virtual reality visit. For 3d modelling and mapping optical data were used. The underwater exploration is composed of a variety of sea elements including: plants, fish, stones, and artefacts, which are randomly positioned. Users can experience an immersive virtual underwater visit in Mazotos shipwreck site and get some information about the shipwreck and its contents for raising their archaeological knowledge and cultural awareness.

The paper presents the results of 3d modelling in the Lusatian Borough, Biskupin, using archival data. Pre-war photographs acquired from different heights, e.g., from a captive balloon (maximum height up to 150m), from a blimp (at a height of 50-110m) and from an aeroplane (at a height of 200m, 300 m and up to 3 km). In order to generate 3d models, AgiSoft tools were applied, as they allow for restoring shapes using triangular meshes. Individual photographs were processed using Google SketchUp software and the "shape from shadow" method. The usefulness of these particular models in archaeological research work was also analysed.
