In the framework of the Project 3d-ICONS (***), different large archaeological models were acquired in Pompeii. In particular, the 3d Model of the House of Stallius Eros (Regio I, Insula VI, 13 - 14) was realized. This house conserves a rich vertical stratigraphy covering a large chronological period and offers interesting information about the development of this side of the ancient city. To implement a detailed survey of the house and to reconstruct the original structure of the domus, different types of survey were carried out, in order to provide a complete 3d model of the house. Three data-acquisition methodologies were used and their final results were compared in order to measure their accuracy, efficacy and velocity. At first, the domus was surveyed by an electronical total station, then two different interventions with un-calibrated photogrammetry were planned. The paper presents some preliminary results obtained by the three methodologies and the integration of the three models. The computational environments reproducing the ancient domus of Stallius Eros allows to propose new archaeological interpretations and hypothesis about the reconstruction of the ancient House.

We present the results of a point-cloud-based survey deriving from the use of image-based techniques, in particular with multi-image monoscopic digital photogrammetry systems and software, the so-called "structure-from-motion" technique. The aim is to evaluate the advantages and limitations of such procedures in architectural surveying, particularly in conditions that are "at the limit". A particular case study was chosen: the courtyard of Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, which can be considered the ideal example due to its notable vertical, rather than horizontal, layout. In this context, by comparing and evaluating the different results, we present experimentation regarding this single case study with the aim of identifying the best workflow to realise a complex, articulated set of representations-using 3d modelling and 2d processing-necessary to correctly document the particular characteristics of such an architectural object.

The generative surface reconstruction problem can be stated like this: Given a finite collection of 3d shapes, create a small set of functions that can be combined to generate the given shapes procedurally. We propose generative fact labeling (GFL) as an attempt to organize the iterative process of shape analysis and shape synthesis in a systematic way. We present our results for the reconstruction of complex windows of neo-classical buildings in Graz, followed by a critical discussion of the limitations of the approach. [GRAPHICS] .

The development of contactless documentation techniques is allowing researchers to collect high volumes of three-dimensional data in a short time but with high levels of accuracy. The digitalisation of cultural heritage opens up the possibility of using image processing and analysis, and computer graphics techniques, to preserve this heritage for future generations;augmenting it with additional information or with new possibilities for its enjoyment and use. The collection of precise datasets about cultural heritage status is crucial for its interpretation, its conservation and during the restoration processes. The application of digital-imaging solutions for various feature extraction, image data-analysis techniques, and three-dimensional reconstruction of ancient artworks, allows the creation of multidimensional models that can incorporate information coming from heterogeneous data sets, research results and historical sources. Real objects can be scanned and reconstructed virtually, with high levels of data accuracy and resolution. Real-time visualisation software and hardware is rapidly evolving and complex three-dimensional models can be interactively visualised and explored on applications developed for mobile devices. This paper will show how a 3d reconstruction of an object, with multiple layers of information, can be stored and visualised through a mobile application that will allow interaction with a physical object for its study and analysis, using 3d Tracking based Augmented Reality techniques.

In laser scanner architectural surveying it is necessary to extract orthogonal projections from the tridimensional model, plans, elevations and cross sections. The paper presents the workflow of architectural drawings production from laser scans, focusing on the orthogonal projection of the point cloud on solid images, in order to avoid the time consuming surface modeling, when it is not strictly necessary. The proposed procedures have been implemented in fortran90 and included in the VELOCE software package, then tested and applied to the case study of the San Pietro church in Porto Venere (SP), integrating the architectural surveying with an existing bathymetric and coastal surveying.

In September 2011 the fortress Al Zubarah, built in 1938 as a typical Arabic fortress and restored in 1987 as a museum, was recorded by the HafenCity University Hamburg using terrestrial laser scanning with the IMAGER 5006h and digital photogrammetry for the Qatar Museum Authority within the framework of the Qatar Islamic archaeology and Heritage Project. One goal of the object recording was to provide detailed 2d/3d documentation of the fortress. This was used to complete specific detailed restoration work in the recent years. From the registered laser scanning point clouds several cuttings and 2d plans were generated as well as a 3d surface model by triangle meshing. Additionally, point clouds and surface models were automatically generated from digital imagery from a Nikon d70 using the open-source software Bundler/PMVS2, free software VisualSFM, Autodesk Web Service 123d Catch beta, and low-cost software Agisoft PhotoScan. These outputs were compared with the results from terrestrial laser scanning. The point clouds and surface models derived from imagery could not achieve the same quality of geometrical accuracy as laser scanning (i.e. 1-2 cm).

The remote visualization and navigation of 3d data directly inside the web browser is becoming a viable option, due to the recent efforts in standardizing the components for 3d rendering on the web platform. Nevertheless, handling complex models may be a challenge, especially when a more generic solution is needed to handle different cases. In particular, archeological and architectural models are usually hard to handle, since their navigation can be managed in several ways, and a completely free navigation may be misleading and not realistic. In this paper we present a solution for the remote navigation of these dataset in a WebGL component. The navigation has two possible modes: the "bird's eye" mode, where the user is able to see the model from above, and the "first person" mode, where the user can move inside the structure. The two modalities are linked by a point of interest, that helps the user to control the navigation in an intuitive fashion. Since the terrain may not be flat, and the architecture may be complex, it's necessary to handle these issues, possibly without implementing complex mesh-based collision mechanisms. Hence, a complete navigation is obtained by storing the height and collision information in an image, which provides a very simple source of data. Moreover, the same image-based approach can be used to store additional information that could enhance the navigation experience. The method has been tested in two complex test cases, showing that a simple yet powerful interaction can be obtained with limited pre-processing of data.

The methodology proposed in this paper in based on an integrated approach for creating a 3d digital reconstruction of an archaeological site, using extensively the 3d documentation of the site in its current state, followed by an iterative interaction between archaeologists and digital modelers, leading to a progressive refinement of the reconstructive hypotheses. The starting point of the method is the reality-based model, which, together with ancient drawings and documents, is used for generating the first reconstructive step. Such rough approximation of a possible architectural structure can be annotated through archaeological considerations that has to be confronted with geometrical constraints, producing a reduction of the reconstructive hypotheses to a limited set, each one to be archaeologically evaluated. This refinement loop on the reconstructive choices is iterated until the result become convincing by both points of view, integrating in the best way all the available sources. The proposed method has been verified on the ruins of five temples in the My Son site, a wide archaeological area located in central Vietnam. The integration of 3d surveyed data and historical documentation has allowed to support a digital reconstruction of not existing architectures, developing their three-dimensional digital models step by step, from rough shapes to highly sophisticate virtual prototypes.

The Summer School of Surveying and 3d modelling in Paestum was an opportunity to explore the use of innovative tools and advanced techniques in the design, implementation and management of surveys of historic and artistic complexes. In general such methods are used specifically for the development and management of vulnerability maps of existing heritage and so for the preventive conservation and valorisation of the built environment. The accurate detection of risk situations and the systematic promotion of highly selected and minimally invasive maintenance practices means that restoration and the efficiency of cycles of intervention can be optimized, with clear benefits from economic and cultural points of view. The group worked on the survey and 3d modelling of the Temple of Neptune, the Sphinx and the Metope of the archaeological Park in Paestum.

The history and identity of the Avignon's bridge is inseparable from that of the Rhone river. Therefore, in order to share the history and memory of the Rhone, it is essential to get to know this bridge and especially to identify and make visible the traces of its past, its construction, its interaction with the river dynamics, which greatly influenced his life. These are the objectives of the PAVAGE project that focuses on digitally surveying, modelling and re-visiting a heritage site of primary importance with the aim of virtually restoring the link between the two sides which, after the disappearance of the Roman bridge of Arles, constituted for a long time the only connection between Lyon or Vienna and the sea. Therefore, this project has an important geo-historical dimension for which geo-morphological and paleoenvironmental studies were implemented in connection with the latest digital simulation methods exploiting geographic information systems. By integrating knowledge and reflections of archaeologists, historians, geomorphologists, environmentalists, architects, engineers and computer scientists, the result of this project (which involved 5 laboratories during 4 years) is a 3d digital model covering an extension of 50 km2 achieved by integrating satellite imagery, UAV-based acquisitions, terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry, etc. Beyond the actions of scientific valorisation concerning the historical and geomorphological dimensions of the project, the results of this work of this interdisciplinary investigation and interpretation of this site are today integrated within a location-based augmented reality application allowing tourists to exploring the virtual reconstruction of the bridge and its environment through tablets inside the portion of territory covered by this project (between Avignon and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon). This paper presents the main aspects of the 3d virtual reconstruction approach.
