Spatiotemporal periodic structures are systems whose properties are periodically modulated both in space and time, able to support waves only in one direction, so breaking the so called reciprocity principle. Studies till now focused mainly on continuous systems, where properties are modulated in a continuous manner both in space and time. However, this is not the case of real mechanical systems: if on the one hand it is possible to think of a continuous temporal modulation by the means of an actively controlled smart material, on the other hand it is really hard to imagine a system that can be controlled punctually in space. For this reason discretely modulated structures are studied in this work, putting in evidence the differences with the continuous ones and providing some basis for the actual design of such a system.

In order to overcome the difficulties of multimodal active vibration damping of the flexible thin structure using simultaneous piezoelectric sensing and actuation, an noncollocated vibration control method, in which piezoelectric film sensors and actuators were shaped using different shaping functions, was proposed in this paper. At first, fundamental equations were summarized and vibration responses of the beam were derived based on the modal coordinate systems. Then, it was shown that by considering phase characteristics of the controller in conjunctions with the polarity of the piezofims in high order frequencies, multimodal control will be implemented both theoretically and experimentally.

A mechatronic approach, able to continuously adjust the damping coefficient according to the operation requirements, represents a very attractive and smart solution. In this paper, a control strategy for semi-active dampers of train vertical secondary suspensions is presented. The controller aims at assuring the maximum available damping at low frequencies, while at high frequencies minimizes the force transmitted to the carbody that excites the bending modes.

A passive control methodology to increase the seismic safety of multi-drum columns is presented. The response of a large scale column-model to dynamic excitations is investigated experimentally. A particle damper is used to replace one of the columns' original drums. The influence of the system parameters on the response of the column is also examined. The seismic response of the column can be considerably reduced if a particle damper replaces a drum above the mid-height. Guidelines and a design methodology are proposed to restore and protect monumental structures consisting of multi-drum columns.

The spread of smartstructures has recorded a significant increase during the last decades. Nowadays these solutions are applied in various fields such as aerospace, automotive and civil constructions. This kind of structures was born in the past in order to cope with the high vibrations that every lightweight structure has to face. In order to reduce weight designers usually decide to use very thin and lightweight structures. In the automotive field, for example, a reduced fuel consumption is obtained employing lightweight materials. However, in general a worsening of the vibroacoustic comfort is obtained with undesired vibrations that can be really annoying for passengers and dangerous for the structure itself. This work presents an innovative smart plate that is able to actively vary its dynamic properties, by means of an IMSC control logic, in order to improve the acoustic performances. An investigation about the system response in the high frequency range allowed to assess the behavior in terms of absorption, reflection coefficient and transmission loss.

Novel methods for remote coupling of light into optical fibers embedded in composite structures has been explored. A passive technique in which light is coupled via a 45 degrees angled mirror manufactured at the end of a plastic optical fiber (POF) was explored as well as an active technique in which a dye-impregnated POF was used to couple light to immersed fibers without physical connectorization. The fibers were immersed in fluids with different refractive indices to determine the effect of index on the coupling efficiency and simulate optical fibers embedded in a polymer composite. The passive technique proved much more efficient with a maximum efficiency of 91.4% achieved in an index of 1.33. The dye-impregnated POF was much less efficient with typical values ranging from 1%-2% for various indexes.

A Multifunctional smart material system consists of two or more different smart material phases in the form of a hybrid system, in which every phase performs a different but necessary function. In this work, we show how thermally responsive Shape memory alloys (SMA) and Shape Memory Polymers (SMP) can be combined to form a Multifunctional smart Material system (MSMS). The transformation temperatures M-f, M-s, A(s) and A(f) of SMA and the glass transition T-g for the SMP play a critical role in designing such a MSMS. We illustrate how varying the T-g of SMP between the transformation temperatures M-f and A(f) of SMA results in a multi-state smart bias system with varying stiffnesses. In addition, we establish guidelines for the volume fractions of the individual constituents of such MSMSs to form "smart-bias" tools/devices. We further propose various ideas for smart devices that can operate through three temperature ranges, with one material constituent being passive and the other active at a given temperature.

The objective of this paper is to present an overall approach and to point out the methods and possibilities of a virtual design for actively controlled smartsystems with the intention to use the suggested approach and methods for the subsequent prototype and real activesystems development. The suggested methods of the virtual design are computer aided, including different software tools used to generate models necessary for the overall virtual design. The basis of the approach is an overall finite element (FE) or a multi-body system (MBS) model of the smart system including the passive parts of the machine or structure as well as the actuators and sensors and the control algorithm.
