With the increasing number of flights, the confliction troubles and runway incursions arise, especially in the large airports. To guarantee safety of surface movements, it is necessary to develop advanced Surface Movement Guidance and control System (A-SMGCS). This paper focuses on the controller synthesis of A-SMGCS based on discrete event supervisory control theory. During the controller designing process, controlled movements model based on Petri net is proposed, the confliction avoidance problem existing in airport movements is transformed into the state forbidden problem of controlled Petri net. To achieve the forbidden state avoidance and keep the maximum freedom for movement objects, the control problems are sorted into single-object and multi-objects constraint controlling by constraint forms. Complementary place technique and fusion technique are adopted into the two scenarios respectively. The result of simulation indicates that controller designed can detect the potential confliction efficiently and increase the capacity of airport considerably.

Ozonation is one of the most important steps in drinking water treatment plants. The efficiency of ozonation is directly related to the treated water quality. However, ozone dosing process is very difficult to be controlled because of its complicated nonlinear behaviour. In this paper, an advancedcontrol scheme based on model predictive control(MPC) is proposed for the ozone dosing process. With the proposed control scheme, a RBF neural network model is established which could be used for MPC. The control strategy of maintaining a constant ozone exposure is adopted for effective disinfection requirements. The full-scale experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this advancedcontrol method.

Innovative concepts in control systems have relegated what was considered a satisfactory solution a decade ago to obsolescence today, One novel feature is artificial intelligence (AI) which has ability to cope with uncertainties that we encounter in today's complex processcontrol. Intelligent control systems are becoming almost commonplace worldwide incorporating special features such as expert systems, self-tuning, self-diagnosis, life management, equipment health monitoring, modelling and simulation. Thus, a trend towards larger desalination plants necessitates more sophisticated automation technology. In view of the benefits that can be realized from the application of artificial intelligence in the control field of desalination processes, intelligent control is the application of AI in control, employing methods like expert systems, neural networks, fuzzy logic and pattern recognition. Thereby, learning and decision making are the most important features of intelligent control, The application of intelligent control is necessary due to computational complexity, nonlinear behaviour with many degrees of freedom, and the presence of uncertainty in control environment. Intelligent control can be used at different levels of control systems. On the highest level, monitoring of data, selection of algorithms, selection of objective functions, and assigning of values for the setpoints are the main aims. It is not wise to claim that automation is perfect, and people may desire to keep ultimate authority over the automation. However, this paper tries to argue with some examples in transport and processcontrol why it is necessary to relax the constraint that "human must be maintained as the final authority over the automation" in human supervisory control. It is shown that the final authority for decision and action may be traded flexibly and dynamically between humans and automation, and that there can be cases in which automation may be given the final authority for ensuring the safety of a system.

In the present paper a bank of local linear observers is designed for an alcoholic fermentation process. The design is based on the respective linear approximants of the mathematical description of the nonlinear process at particular operating points. The target and tolerance operating areas of the process are determined. A residual of the performance of the observers is introduced. A switching mechanism is developed on the basis of the minimal residual. The performance of the proposed observer design scheme is illustrated using simulation results.
